ZClasses inside ZClasses
by flight＠mathi.uni-heidelberg.de 27 Oct '99

I'd like to setup a site with a simplified management screen, similar to Zope.org in that the editor of the site only has a very limited set of elements to choose from: A two-level hierarchy structured in sections and subsections, and both of them can contain one or more pages. I thought I should use ZClasses to implement this: A product "MySite", inside a ZClass "MySiteClass" (with a base class ZObjectManager). Now I thought I should create a second ZClass "Section" (also derived from ZObjectManager) inside the methods view of MySiteClass, then a ZClass "Subsection" inside "Section" and finally a ZClass "Page". I think that's what the Zope Developer Guide suggests, in "Classes inside Classes" But now I fail to tell MySiteClass that it should only take subobjects of type "Section": The "Subobjects" view of the MySiteClass class doesn't list Section (I guess since it's not a product but only a method?). I'm a bit lost here: Do I have to drop this concept with encapsulated ZClasses and should I instead setup the Section, Subsection and Page classes as products of their own ? Gregor

Zope Distribution Examples (was RE: [Zope] Front door on the Zope web site) web site)

However if it is easier to > get at these > examples the light bulb might just turn on a bit quicker for some > people. I thoroughly agree with this idea. eg: I've just started on Zope, and I spent *ages* figuring out the correct way to invoke a DTML method with arguments to produce a rollover method. More examples would have helped a lot. Another point, however, is that the examples must be maintained and consistent. By which I mean that the default /QuickStart stuff has references to a lot of things which aren't named like that anymore (Aqueduct, f'rinstance). This is confusing to beginners. However, this is getting away from what is needed on the web site. For that, something like a "what can I do with Zope?" section would be good. Perhaps, showing something like the database examples from the quick start (database integration always impresses people :). The idea should be, however not just to show people what Zope can do, but to give them a brief idea of how to *think Zope*, which might well be quite different to what they are used to. -Dom -- ********************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. New Version of Zope RPMS Available
by Jeff Rush 27 Oct '99

27 Oct '99

I've upgraded my systems to Red Hat 6.1 and just this morning put up new RPMs for Zope that fix problems reported to me re RH 6.1. They are Zope-2.0.1-*5*... and you can get them from: http://starship.python.net/crew/jrush/Zope/Zope2.html On 26 Oct 1999 17:38:29 -0700, Karl Anderson wrote: >I'll confirm that a vanilla RedHat 6.1 dist. with the Zope/zserver >2.0.1-4 RPMs doesn't work. For the paranoid, this is yet >another port being listened to, with DoS vulnerabilities mentioned in >the man page. Correct and since I can't go changing your syslog settings from within an RPM, I removed the env var I had set in zserver.sh that caused it to log via syslog. The original Zope tarball didn't log via syslog either and I added it when I made the RPMs. Compatibility is more important and RPM users can always rework the logging to suit their admin and security policy. I shouldn't by default depend on syslog. On Tue, 26 Oct 1999 19:54:59 -0600, Paul Grunwald wrote: >Thanks for your help, I was able to get it started by following your >instructions. I also didn't see the problem with /var/zope/syslog.pid, >the -2 and -4 RPMS put it in different places. I hope we can get this fixed >because I don't want to leave the 514 port open. The problem with /var/zope/zserver.pid only occured on some systems and not others, for no apparent reason I could see. However, the point is moot as I've changed the /etc/rc.d/init.d/zope script to _not_ delete the .pid file when shutting down zserver, so it will work everywhere. One other change -- at Michel's suggestion Zope.cgi now points to an empty file via the PCGI_PUBLISHER line, so that if PCGI cannot find ZServer, it won't try to start one and mislead people when it gets the euid/egid permissions wrong. It will give a 500 - temporary error window instead -- not perfect but the best that can be done w/o reworking PCGIwrapper in detail. -Jeff Rush

How can I create an list_object to use with manage_changeProperties
by jens ebaer 27 Oct '99

27 Oct '99

Hi folks, I've got a little problem because i want to change the properties of a folder object <dtml-with id> #id of the folder objekt <dtml-call "manage_changeProperties(list_object)"> </dtml-with> the list_object must contain the folder properties and the new values of the properties (comming via REQUEST (form-dtml)) {'id':'exampleid','title':'exampletitle'} The creation of this list_objet must be dynamic. So that there is no need to change the list_object if a property were added to the folder object. something like that: {id:REQUEST['id'],title:REQUEST['titel']} How can i create such an object? (I copied a traceback snippet below for reference). I can still copy and paste a ZClass Instance, then delete the original instance. As for renaming, I can rename the instances OK. Can you see the IDs of your instances? If you cannot see the ID values on the property pages and cannot access them from DTML take a look at this draft document: <http://www.zope.org/Members/AlexR/ZClassIDBug>. It might help. Cheers. Can't get rid of ZGadfly in Add menu
by Itamar Shtull-Trauring 27 Oct '99

27 Oct '99

I have a ObjectManager/ZCatalog ZClass Searcher which can contain folders. I create a folder Test in an instance. / -> Searcherinstance -> Test Both Test, Searcherinstance, and the root folder do not let Owners add ZGadfly objects, yet it shows up in the add menu of Test as an option for a Owner to add. Apparently the Searcher ZClass inherited the ZGadfly permission from either the FOlder or ZCatalog, I can't figure out why they're a default in either, but I still have set it to not allow it to Owners. You cannot sort on a text index, only a field index. Is this what your doing? Also, when reporting an error, the traceback is very useful. Otherwise I'm just guessing. -Michel

FYI: Zope Weekly News
by Amos Latteier 27 Oct '99

27 Oct '99

Hi, As usual, the vast quantity of Zope activity this week is a bit overwhelming. One notable trend is the blossoming of not only community contributed Zope software, but community contributed Zope documentation. For example, there are currently 75 How-Tos on Zope.org! In addition, this week also saw several announcements for documentation on writing Python Products. * Jon Udell wrote an article entitled "XML-RPC Programming with Zope" for Zope for byte.com. http://www.byte.com/column/BYT19991021S0014 * Python God Andrew M. Kuchling started a discussion about implementing XML-RPC Methods for Zope. http://www.zope.org/pipermail/zope-dev/1999-October/001949.html * O'Reilly Editor-in-Chief Frank Willison announced that he has nothing to say about any rumored Zope book ;-) http://www.oreilly.com/frank/ * Butch Landingin released Squishdot 0.3.2 which is a bugfix release. http://squishdot.org/Download/Squishdot * Scott Roberts announced preliminary support for FastCGI. This package extends ZServer to allow it to speak to web servers that support FastCGI. This is similar to PCGI but more efficient. http://www.zope.org/Members/sroberts/fastcgi-support * Ross Lazarus announced an updated LDAP adapter Product. It acts like an acl_users folder but allows authentication from an LDAP server. http://www.zope.org/pipermail/zope/1999-October/012662.html * Anthony Baxter released SQL Session v.0.1.1 which provides persistent session objects which are stored in a SQL database. http://www.zope.org/Members/anthony/software/SQLSession http://www.zope.org/pipermail/zope/1999-October/012642.html * Ken Manheimer announced a How-To entitled "Debugging Zope Python Code" which, while incomplete, is full of juicy tips for Zope hackers. http://www.zope.org/Members/klm/debuggingzope * Garth Kidd released a How-To and an example Zope Product which illustrates extending Zope in Python. http://www.zope.org/Members/gtk/Boring/HowTo-Boring * Speaking of examples of Zope Products in Python, Jeff Rush also posted an example Python Product. http://starship.python.net/crew/jrush/Zope/ * Rounding out this week's Python Product announcements, Amos Latteier will give a talk on "Extending Zope in Python" at the Portland, Oregon Python Interest Group (PORPIGgies) meeting on November 1. http://www.egroups.com/group/porpig/4.html * Jonothan Farr released a Local File System Product. This allows you to create objects which provide controlled access to the local filesystem http://www.zope.org/Members/jfarr/LocalFS * Alexandre Ratti wrote a How-To which describes custom date formats. http://www.zope.org/Members/AlexR/CustomDateFormats * Michel Pelletier announced a preliminary Portal Tool Kit model on the zope-dev list. The PTK may not be complete vaporware after all ;-) http://www.zope.org/pipermail/zope-dev/1999-October/001908.html * Oleg Broytmann posted a patch to load_site.py which allows you to create more Zopish DTML Documents from imported HTML files. http://www.zope.org/pipermail/zope-dev/1999-October/001935.html * A.M. Kuchling released ODP 0.03 This is a Zope product which allows browsing of the Open Directory Project's RDF dumps. The ODP is the information which powers the search engine at http://dmoz.org/ http://starship.python.net/crew/amk/zope/ODP.html http://www.zope.org/pipermail/zope/1999-October/012622.html * Tim Wilson started a discussion of Zope and RDF which soon expanded to include syndication and RSS. http://www.zope.org/pipermail/zope/1999-October/012721.html * Despite the Perl conspiracy ;-) Zope showed up on several times and in a positive light on another Slashdot thread. http://slashdot.org/askslashdot/99/10/16/166256.shtml * Amos Latteier posted to the ZDP list concerning a possible future turning over of the Zope Guides to the Zope community. http://www.zope.org/pipermail/zdp/1999-October/000919.html Until next week. -Amos -- Amos Latteier mailto:amos@digicool.com Digital Creations http://www.digicool.com

I just added Mr. Creosote to my DA to log all of the queries via UDP to a loghost, with timestamps - this makes it easy to view the queries as they happen even on another machine, you can also take a log if you want. Crude, but it's not bad. Mr. Creosote is in the pcgi/ directory of your Zope installation... --Brian
