Two DTML/Python questions

Is there a way to access builtin python functions (ie those in __builtins__) from DTML without resorting to external methods? Secondly, is there a clean way in DTML to check if an item in a ZCLass (descended from Object Manager) is actually an instance of another ZClass? Thanks, Hunter

I tried to call the Catalog that the KMnetNews uses KMCatalog rather than Catalog, and tried to use it (having also put KMCatalog in the default_catalog entry in the Article Stores properties. I found that the system wasn't putting the new articles into the Catalog for me. After a while, I change the name of the catalog back to Catalog, and change the properties, and it burst into life. It looks like the name of the catalog is hard-coded somewhere. ZCatalog questions

1. What's the difference between the Metadata tab and the Indexing tab? 2. I understood from the draft CatalogAwareness how-to that editing a propertysheet with the built-in interface doesn't update the catalog - you have to do it manually. Is it possible to check if an object inherits from CatalogAware? Because if so, I'd change Zope to update the catalog automatically if the changed object was CatalogAware. TIA. New version of ODP code released

I've made a new version, v0.02 of the Open Directory Project code available. http://starship.python.net/crew/amk/zope/ODP.html It no longer uses XMLDocument to parse XML; instead, you'll have to install the XML-SIG's tools. Rather than procrastinate further, I'm making this incomplete release so people can poke at it. Note that the code fully deserves its low version number of 0.02; most notably, I haven't made my test dataset comprehensive enough to exercise every feature, so there are still bits of code that haven't been exercised. Please don't hesitate to ask installation questions; I'm working on a new set of Web pages, but haven't finished them yet. -- A.M. Which docs am I missing?

It seems as if I am missing quite a bit of documentation. I have DTML, ZAG, ZCMG, ZDG (just the archive names) and tried to read about everything that is relevant to "plain" DTML (seems to be limited to DTML, ZCMG). But then I run into "Zope Quick Reference" which is quite massive and all very fine - the problem just is: where is the more elaborate counter-part to this *quick* reference, with all the explanations? Essentially I am looking for documentation on "techniques" - ways of how to do things. Now, there are quite a few of HOWTOs. But unfortunately most of these HOWTOs appear to demonstrate higher-level concepts. Take, for instance, <dtml-with Images> <dtml-in "objectValues(['Image'])"> <dtml-var sequence-item> </dtml-in> </dtml-with> which I found in the archives for this mailing list. Given the current "official" documentation, how could I have found out an explanation of what <dtml-in "objectValues(['Image'])"> does (ignoring the problem of how to find objectValues)? The only place I have found "objectValues" mentioned is "For example, to display all sub-objects of a folder, the objectValues method may be used (figure 13)." Sure, so what? What's this "Image" thing? Apparently it is an index into a Python list which returns a list of all images in the current folder? Name space? What else is there? Well, the "Entire Zope FAQ" (FAQ!) says "You can however, specify a list of object metatypes that it should return. objectValues(['DTML Document']) will only return all DTML Document objects in a Folder. Other metatypes you could select on are: Folder, DTML Method, File, Image, Mail Host, User Folder and Session." Do you see my problem? When I *have* something, I can *backtrack* this to at least some bits and pieces of information - although the only way to find it is a grep, which is as brute-force as it can be. But where is the documentation that "looks forward", that helps me to find out how to write "original" code? Reverse-engineering may be fun, but it's a bit time-consuming for my taste? Thanks for any pointers!

So you copy the lists inside of your ZClass definition. The downside is apparent: every object now has a copy of all of your lists. Big bummer when it comes to long lists of items or a large number of objects. But, the real problem comes when you try to create an instance of your ZClass outside of the management UI. In order to draw a selection box that has a specific variable selected, you need to have a massive hunk 'o code in a loop to compare every option to the selected value. If a value is selected, then you put the "SELECTED" keyword in the OPTION tag. ARGH. There has to be an easier way. I'm beginning to think that a "Utils" folder with common "tag renderers" would be alot easier than the mess I've been stumbling through for the past 3 days. DTML is difficult. This is what you normally want, because the only way to interact with the server is to request another page. You don't want to ask for a new page just for a mouseover event. There are a few standard ways to handle the mouseover change ov images using javascript on the browser - many javascript books and articles show how to do it (usually by caching the other image in a javascript variable). So DTML wouldn't be involved at all. Tom Passin

Try this: <IMG SRC = images/img1> Liz Pelletier *********************************************************** 2. I would like to aggregate my images into a common folder off the zope root, something like this: (indenting to show directory structure) / Mysite [_] control_panel [_] acl_users [_] images * img1 * img2 * img3 % index_html % standard_error_message % standard_html_header % standard_html_footer and then call them as <dtml-var images/img1> in index_html. Even though the documentation suggests that this is possible, doing so always returns an error for me.
