Newbie Acquisition Question

I've been playing with Zope for a couple of days. Coming from a Smalltalk background, many of the concepts employed by Zope are very familiar. However, I seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding about how acquisition works. As an experiment, I created a Folder object called "Testing". I defined an index_html document with the following DTML code: <dtml-var standard_html_header> <dtml-var folderName> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> I also defined a DTML method in Testing called "folderName" which contained the following: Testing I viewed the page in a browser via http://localhost:8080/Testing and sure enough I saw a page with the phrase "Testing" correctly displayed. I then created a Folder within Testing called "SubTest". In SubTest, I defined one DTML method called "folderName" Inside of this method I put the contents: SubTest I then displayed the page via http://localhost:8080/Testing/SubTest and was confused when the screen still displayed the phrase "Testing" instead of "SubTest". It's probably my Smalltalk bias, but I was expecting that the system would look up the tree from SubTest until it found an index_html that it could display. Having found that, it would see that it needed to execute the method "folderName". Since the object being displayed was SubTest, I assumed that it would try to find the "folderName" method starting in SubTest. Having found it, it would use the result from that method for display. However, this is not what happened. Where did I go wrong? I was under the impression that I could factor common behavior up the tree and only implement distinct behavior at lower levels. Did I just do something wrong? Is there a way to accomplish what I want to accomplish? Thanks. James W. Programmatically adding and deleting indexes in a ZCatalog

Hi, I've got one of these ObjectManager/ZCatalog derived ZClasses, and I'm wanting to add some code to my _add method to delete some of the default indexes and add some new ones. Some questions for experienced zopers

I've got two pressing questions that I can't seem to find answers to on zope.org: 1. What is the relationship that dtml has (if any) to javascript? Specifically, I want to do onmouseover swapping of a .gif. It seems to me that it would be simple with dtml, something like <dtml-if img1 mouseover == true> <dtml-var img2> <dtml-else> <dtml-var img1> </dtml-if> but I can't find a reference to any such functions. Otherwise, what is the best way to integrate js and dtml? (Sorry for any syntax errors, I'm just starting out) 2. I would like to aggregate my images into a common folder off the zope root, something like this: (indenting to show directory structure) / Mysite [_] control_panel [_] acl_users [_] images * img1 * img2 * img3 % index_html % standard_error_message % standard_html_header % standard_html_footer and then call them as <dtml-var images/img1> in index_html. Even though the documentation suggests that this is possible, doing so always returns an error for me. any help? Thanks, VanL

upgrading a product

An upgrade to KM|netNews was just released. Everytime I try to import the file, it says "already exists". Simply renaming the current product does not help as I then get "Permission Manage... already exists". I tried renaming those files, but was told that operation could not be performed on these file types. Could someone please be explicit about how to upgrade an existing product in newbie terms? Renderable

I downloaded the Renderable Product today. I admit I'm a newbie to Zope, but every time I try to add an external method for function Renderable in module Renderable I get an error: function Renderable not found in module Renderable. I can add an external method for other python modules, so I've installed it in the right directory. Besides, it's at least finding the module, so that's telling me it's in the right place. What am I doing wrong? It must be something so obvious... Thanks in advance, Liz Pelletier

First let me say YES and THANKS! While not wanting to compare Zope to Cold Fusion or Site Server there is finally an alternative for the rest of us AND it's Open Source! :-) This is exactly (I think) what I've been looking for! I stumbled onto it on Friday night, read everything I could get my hands on by Sunday and am now ready to install it. I do have one HUGE newbie type question for the more experienced user base at large... Currently I have a large base of (IMHO) very nice legacy pages (they include a lot of tables, some with frames, etc. all of which take time to create). They were designed in FrontPage (as I have access to it and Site Server) over the last two months or so and are at the heart of my tiny startup (along with the business logic of course). I would REALLY like to move these pages into Zope rather than reconstruct them as it would have an adverse effect on my sites launch date. Even more so than the moving into Zope itself. Of course I am fully willing to remove everything but standard HTML or anything else that would help the transition. Is it possible? A lot of work? As I haven't installed Zope yet I have not seen or experienced any of the design tools DTML, etc. and I have not found anything really directly related to this in the mail list archives. Of course any help is truly appreciated! Selection Box

I have searched most reference material with no avail to try to find out how to set up a simple selection box. I have a ZClass called LinkClassification to which I have attached a property link_class which is assigned to value link_class_data. My question is where do I create the variable link_class_data? I think it should be as another property in the same directory. When I do this the zope management screen hangs. I presume this is because I did not define the link_class_data property correctly. What are the valid types allowed for a selection box - strings,text,etc.? Does someone have the syntax for how the selection box is assigned a variable? Or is there an example somewhere I can reference? Thanks, John

PCGI & Windows NT & Zope 2.0.1

Hello, RE: "pcgi-wrapper" for Zope 2.0.1 I'm migrating from 1.10.2 to 2.0.1 and found that pcgi-wrapper doesn't seem to work. Zope 2.0.1 has been installed and I have been able to talk to it via "localhost:8080". Oddly the new pcgi-wrapper does appear to work with 1.10.3. (I had to reinstall this version to get my site back up and running). Comments: The HOW-TO's do not mention to which version of Zope that they apply or sometimes even to which OS they apply. Some docs are just out of touch. For example some refer to Zope.cgi which I NEVER found. Some of the files that I'm supposed to edit for WIN32 start off with "#!/usr/bin..." which is obviously Unix. The instructions to convert the database from 1.10 to 2.0 say "utilities/bbb.py -f var/Data.fs var/Data.bbe" which doesn't work when typed at the command prompt and I couldn't get an "association" built right which could do it. They could have said: "bin\python.exe utilities\bbb.py -f var\Data.fs var\Data.bbe" which gets the job done with no fuss. Thanks, Larry

To Redirect or not to Redirect, that is the question

Uh... how would I put it. I've hit another brickwall :) (I'm ashamed to come to this only to ask for help....) I have problem with rendering images in a sub-sub-sub-folder that are linked with <img src> tags inside a html-document within that same sub-sub-sub-folder. For example: main_index.html 1999 10 1000 1001 1002 (i.e. unique article) index.html (render article visible method) image1 (image within the article) image2 image3 In the above scenario I have an article that can be viewed by calling index.html. This can be done with an easy URL that point to the right index.html and the images within that article folder object are rendered beautifully. However, if I want to call only ONE property of EACH article from within main_index.html (that is at root level), I run into problems if the property I want to display (such as teaser) contains a reference to an image within that article. So, if I from main_index.html do the following: <dtml-with "_[_.str(year)]"> <dtml-with "_[_.str(month)]"> <dtml-in "objectValues('KMArticle')" sort=release reverse> <dtml-var teaser> </dtml-in> </dtml-with> </dtml-with> The teaser property for each article is displayed just as I want it to be, but all the image references point to: http://www.mydomain.com/imagename whereas they should point to: http://www.mydomain.com/year/month/articleid/imagename ...in order to be rendered correctly. This is due to the browser still working within the context of main_index.html (that is inside the root folder) and not inside the article folder the property of which I'm about to render. So, my question is: how do I display a property of an object from within a sub-sub-sub-folder while also displaying all inline elements from within that sub-sub-sub-folder to which the property refers to (by use of relative <img src> , <embed> and such html tags)? I know I can do a redirect response, but then it totally jumps to another page (out of my dtml-with recursion) and I can't have that. I need to stay within my loop and also display the images properly for each article. I don't know how to do this. Help :) Best regards, Samu Mielonen PS KMMN is shaping up nicely. Ian, I haven't looked at the source for the NT User Folder product, but creating the SMB User Folder product was a trivial hack on Michel's etcUserFolder product. Maybe... six lines changed. And that was from Linux using a Python SMB library. It would probably be almost as trivial to change the smbUserFolder product to recognize the platform on which it runs. Then in the code, conditionally import modules (it would need to import some win32 stuff if on NT, or the smb library on UNIX) and conditionally use different SMB validation schemes depending on what OS platform the code detects. here's pseudocode - def authorize: if myplatform == win32: authenticate using markhammond's stuff (win32net) return authentication result elif myplatform == unix: authenticate using smbmodule stuff return authentication result else: return unsupported This seems to me to make more sense than using XML-RPC. It's maybe a 2-hour job. I'd promise to do it, but I'd probably be lying :) Its nuts at work right now. Would it be possible to create a regular acl_users folder with the preresiquite methods defined that would merely redirect the "simulated" method to another Zope server? Yes, it's a kludge.
