Zope 2 Beta soon?

Hi, I have a bunch of work to do with Zope 2 for the next phase of my site(s), but I'm using a Windows machine. Is the Zope 2 beta coming soon? Or should I invest time in getting the user-contributed Windows binaries working? Kevin

For example, it is not possible to tell for sure during a GET whether the client is a DAV client or not - this is a lamosity that I hope to get the time to address with the IETF WebDAV group at some point. FTP is a little more clear-cut, but there are still problems with trying to graft capabilities like property management onto a protocol that was never designed to support it. Perhaps you could see properties as a "subobject" of a DTMLDocument for example, and if you accessed the properties via FTP maybe you would get some sort of xml representation of them which you could edit and save to update the properties. But what does that mean for FTP clients? Everything will look like a directory, and things begin to behave less like you would expect if you don't know much about what's going on. One of the goals of FTP/DAV integration is to allow a greater range of users to interact with Zope in a way that fits their tool prefs and level of knowledge -- for example, WYSIWYG tools like Dreamweaver, etc. could use FTP behind the scenes and act as a non-threatening front end to Zope for less experienced users. I suspect that such tools would not behave quite in the expected way if all documents suddenly looked like containers :( Making FTP more useful is certainly a Good Thing, but exactly how we do that will require some careful consideration - especially in terms of hijacking the protocol to do Zope-specific things, since invalidating the expectations of clients would foil much of what we'd hoped to achieve with FTP integration. Sniffing content is never a very deterministic way of doing things. It could be done, I guess, as a configurable option. -Michel

zcatalog always catalogs whole site when using 'Find' tab.

first off, the ZCatalog tutorial has a chunk that includes example HTML, without quoting it - search for 'Replace it with this:', it's the line before and the line after. next thing - if I add a ZCatalog to a subfolder, and do a 'find into catalog', the search will start at the top of the Zope tree. This seems unintuitive to me - it should only do the find from the folder object containing the ZCatalog. Squishdot is based on a much earlier and simpler Digital Creations product (now unsupported) called Confera. Butch Landening (I hope I spelled you last name right Butch) used confera as the basis for the very impressive Squishdot, which is a weblog. Confera is a discussion board product that was written in the pre-weblog days, and it happened to have a nice messaging core which Butch used for the message store in Squisdot. In addition, Butch prettied it up mightily and added many new and cool features. Squishdot can be thought of as an out of the box solution to a Zope based weblog. The Zope Portal Toolkit on the other hand, is, as its name implies, a collection of Zope products and Zope infrastructure components that allow content developers to easily develop sites which employ such features as Membership (the ability for users to contribute in a distributed way to an entire site's content) site wide searching, issue tracking in a sensible workflow environment, and other features. We anticipate Squishdot, with little modification, to be an important community contributed component of the Zope Portal Toolkit. As an example, you can use the ZPT's membership to allow your students to have their own 'home folder' where they can upload documents and files related to their projects. Site wide searching and cataloging will allow your students to search the whole site, and catagoricaly break down the various artifacts of their home folders. Squishdot will allow your students to originate and follow up on threads of discussion among the whole 'community'. My own take on this is that it provides an "infrastructure", a set of basic building blocks, that make it easy to build highly dynamic websites. Squishdot ,on the other hand, is more on the level of an "application" -- it builds on the facilities provided by Zope to give you a very specific set of capabilities to fulfill a particular goal -- a place to publish short news items and hold threaded discussions about them -- with a minimum of configuration while at the same time, be flexible enough to fulfill a wide range of new publishing and discussion needs (need to take a breath after that long sentence, hew :^)) While there are some areas of overlap (specifically, the News portion of ZPT may have the same functions as Squishdot -- but in truth, since I only have a very meagre understanding of the details of ZPT, I really don't know), ZPT covers much more ground than Squishdot. On the other hand, my intent with Squishdot is to integrate and use the ZPT where it makes sense. For example, I'm studying the ZCatalog intently to see what benefits I get if I use it as the indexing mechanism, instead of using the Index and TextIndex classes from Zope. Another thing I am excitedly waiting for is the Membership capabilities. I am hoping this would allow Squishdot to provide user customization and tracking features (i.e. membership registration,login/logout, ability to filter content based on user preferences, etc). <BLATANT PLUG> I would urge you to try out Squishdot and see for yourself whether it fulfills your needs. </BLATANT PLUG> I intended it to be easy to use and is heavily documented so you can extend it to fit your needs if it doesnt already :^).
