Okay, I think I know what is causing the trouble. I found one thing that did not quit work the way the zope docs said. You should be able to *not* include the domain name in the access file (eq superuser:123) I finally got to the point (agian) where I kept getting the failed authorization. Except this time when I clicked cancel I did not get the message that there was no Authorization header found. Instead it said the username and password supplied were incorrect. So I went back into the /var/local/Zope/access file and changed it to rwcanary:xxxxx:*.ohiocounty.net and it WORKED! Now how did I get to that point? First everything belongs to owner and group nobody. With wide open rwx (I'll tighten the security tommorow). Also it seems that Zope must have its own directory. I moved the Zope.cgi to "/home/httpd/cgi-bin/Zope/Zope.cgi" I haven't seen any reference to this in the docs, please correct me if I wrong. The Apache is configured as follows: /etc/httpd/conf/access.conf......... <Directory /home/httpd/cgi-bin/Zope> Options ExecCGI </Directory> /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf............ RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP:Authorization} ^(.*) RewriteRule ^/cgi-bin/Zope/(.*) /home/httpd/cgi-bin/Zope/$1 [e=HTTP_CGI_AUTHORIZATION:%1,t=application/x-httpd-cgi,l] /etc/httpd/conf/srm.conf........... After I log onto the "/Zope.cgi/manage" I can exit and then go backto /Zope/Zope.cgi/manage it goes directly to it. It does not ask me for a username and password anymore. There's no reason for Zope not to URL encode slashes (in my experience URL encoders usually encode everything but a-zA-Z0-9; has URL encoding ever been standarized, anyway?), although I'm not sure if this omission causes trouble for browsers. It should not happen unless the Content-Type header is not written by Zope. If a header-less document is returned, my experience is that Netscape will not, like IE, assume that it is a HTML document. Netscape wants to download an index_html doc

Occasionally I find that Netscape wants to download a document rather than display it as it should. It doesn't seem to happen with IE5. It's happening a lot more with the Squishdot product as well. Is this a Zserver problem? Is there a way I can look at the headers before they hit the browser to see what's happening? Property sheet inheritance for Z Classes

Possible suggestion for improvement: When creating Z Classes that use inheritance, sometimes you'd just like to extend a property sheet from the base class(es), rather than implementing a lowest-common-denominator sheet at the base-class level. Is there a way of doing selective or accumulated inheritance on property sheets, or can it be implemented? For example, a descendant class might to inherit properties "title" and "author", hide the inherited property "keywords", add add the property "subject". Visibility modification might not be easily doable or even desirable (haven't thought that one through yet), but the lack of inheritance seems like a serious omission to me. offtopic: xemacs and zope.

Hi there folks, for those of you using xemacs and zope, what's the magic needed? I've downloaded xemacs 21.1, and the latest huge tarball of packages. When I try to login to the management screen, I'm asked for username and password, then it bombs with 'symbol's value is null: base64-encode-string' or some such. It looks like something's not installed properly, but what? not an emacs user, Anthony.
