URGENT: Can't start up zope.

I was doing some external method work on our production server (silly boy) and something went very wrong. Every time I start zope it will crash. This is both as an NT service and using ZHTTPServer. ZHTTPServer gives a stack dump that mentions initializing products and factories and stuff (unfortunatly my office has a power outage currently so I can't the dump or the data.bbb until 5 hours or so). Using the bbb.py it reports no corruptions so I can only presume the database contains some configurations that screws up zope. To make matters worse our expensive backup solution doesn't seem to have backed up data.bbb. What I need to know are a) What the likely causes of a something like I'm describing? I realize I havn't given much to go on, but ANY information you can give me at this point would very very appreciated. b) What tools do I need to modify the data.bbb. I can convert it xml ok but it seems there's no way to convert it back. Is there any tool where I can just roll back the last few transactions? (This may not work actually as it was probably the external method that did the damage). In case its relevent I guess I should include some detail of the external method I was working on. It was a method to determine if a user had permission to view an object. It looked at a users roles and the roles for the view permission. It would recurse with the parent if the object aquired roles. Thanks in advance for any ideas anyone has. Dylan. djay(a)lucent.com

Don't think that will ever work because there is NO validation of security inside an external method. This might work if it was done in dtml and there was a way of catching exceptions. However I believe this would be an expensive way of doing it if evaluating the object was expensive.

It's necessary to understand that DTML is really more of a REPORTING language, not a scripting language... so if you're writing huge things that are like this, then in many cases you need to consider breaking them apaart. Having said that, the current "leap" from DTML to External Methods is too great, and so there's been some talk of a Script object---this i think would be more useful than the changes to the syntax. Dear Tom, After dealing for some time with excelent web hoster Intercomm (www.icom.com) now we find an even better option: Cubesoft (www.csoft.net) We are now busy building a website powered by Apache/mySQL/Zope/Python and they are VERY permisive on that! You should check them and, if you like what you find, talk to Julien (julien(a)csoft.net) and don't forget to say I point you to Cubesoft (I don't earn anything but I want him to see I spread the word, they are realy good). Nearly everyone here spends a lot of time in the Python debugger instead of sitting in Zope, I think. I agree that debugging DTML is maddingly hard. In fact, I think about this probably fifty times a day. I sure hope, after Zope2 comes out, we step back and think HARD about things like usability. I presume by the leading part of the question that you would feel more comfortable doing your processing in Python than all-DTML. Heh heh, if I had a dime for the number of alpha volunteers for the portal toolkit :^) In the end, the presence of Z Classes, Z Class-based portal toolkit components, and a really nice search system out to make the portal toolkit something that more people will look at. We still have our work cut out for us, but we are awfully excited about it. Just an update on status. We're a bit behind -- our UML modelling tool apparently has a number of bugs that causes us to consistently get ureadable models. The vendor is mostly responsive but it still has caused things to grind to a halt here for the last week. Sigh. Thus, it's iffy whether zope.org will get its June reinvention, which is the predecessor step to checking everything into CVS. Does this damn thing even work. I am not able to get past the zope.cgi/manage. It fals authentication. I have posted numerous times and no one seems to know anything about installing Zope, because I have had no replys. See a previous post <RewriteRule for Zope.cgi>. I am using Apache-1.3.3 will someone pleas tell me if it is incompatible or not????????
