I wasn't ready to answer this the first time around. :^) What I am trying to do right now is to map URL entries built from a database query which builds an index table and include content located in the filesystem. Constraints are that the document URL appear to be a static URL (no GET query) and that I provide a unique DMTL wrapper for each folder which allows one to customize the wrapper that contains the filesystem-based data. Actually, I would like to obtain the included data from anywhere I need, not just from the filesystem. Now I know how to use pluggable brains from ZSQL to specify a class to get close to this, but what if the document isn't in the database and a query can't return it? I would like to have that same class behavior which would allow me to use a __getitem__ to use the 'filename' (which doesn't really exist anywhere) as info on how to include the content I need. I wrote a little external method - include_file() which takes the pathname from a folder attribute and the 'filename' which is called via a 'wrap' dtml method (wrap?filename) which includes the filedata in context. But instead of 'wrap/?filename' what I want is more like 'get/wrap/filename' where get sets the class behavior that knows how to find 'filename' and 'wrap' is the editable dtml in that folder which encapsulates it. Or I'd be very happy with 'wrap/filename', but I don't know how to assign __getitem__ behavior to a DTML document. :^) Alternately, I was thinking of writing a Product which allowed me to specify the dtml wrapper as an attribute and used a __getitem__ method to retrieve the filedata and encapsulate it in the wrapper. ZPublisher/ZTemplate questions

Okay, so a couple of people have said that it looks like I want to use ZPublisher on it's own, instead of the entire Zope setup. It also looks like there are a number of other stubborn =) (read: we like things in files) people out there who are doing the same. My first question has to do with using templates with ZPublisher: Will I still get to use all the nifty "var", "expr" and flow control constructs in my dtml, or will I be limited because my stuff in not running within Zope? Do I need to get the ZTemplate package to do this, or does ZPublisher have this stuff built in? Second, where can I get documentation and examples on using ZPublisher and ZTemplate on their own? Third: Will ZPublisher run with the embedded Python/Apache system, or do I need to use pcgi? Fourth: If I want to maintain state/session information inside my code, which of the above solutions will work better? I know that Apache instances only last for N requests, does Python/Apache have a shared memory system to handle this. (Sorry if this is off topic, but I figure someone here must have played with it) Thanks for all the help, I'm really excited to get started with Python. Zope: http://www.zope.org/ does object caching and object deactivation. Zope was the combination of Bobo, Principia (our old commercial product), and our relational database intergration software. The Zope object database is perfectly usable outside of the rest of Zope. Good luck! --Paul

Actually, this would be a fantastic tool for me as well. Which brings up another question: Anyone succeed in getting Zope running on the Macintosh? BoboPOS: Large Dictionary questions

Hello all. Due to a recent post on comp.lang.python "Large Dictionaries" I have been looking at BoboPOS as a potential solution. I have been trying to muck through the available documentation to arrive at some simple, minimal-code versions of basic tasks (sort of a mini-howto for large Dictionaries). Basic Task #1 Store/Retrieve simple picklable objects from BoboPOS import PickleDictionary from BoboPOS import Persistence pd = PickleDictionary("/tmp/pickle_dict") # begin a transaction get_transaction().begin() pd[1] = "This is a test for entry 1" pd[2] = "This is a test for entry 2" # commit the changes to the database get_transaction().commit() del pd # did this work? pd = PickleDictionary("pickle_dict") print pd[1] print pd[2] del pd The above code works well (it, perhaps, is not minimal). The problem I am having is that the above implementation will not cache. Suppose the transaction is in a loop: for i in range(10000): pd[i] = "Entry for key int(%i)"%i The memory used by this implementation is the same as the size of the "pickle_dict" file. I have looked through the source code and noticed that what I might actually want to use is a Transactional Pickle Dictionary which apparently does call the internal jar.cache.minimize() . Alghough the cache.minimize is only called during the abort() function which confuses me. The question is: How do I make large pickle dictionaries cache? Of course, this particular thread might be well used in a how-to. If such a beast already exists, please point me in the right direction. In any case, the results of this query will probably be posted to comp.lang.python as a service to the community and to promote Zope. Netscape Web Server Plugins

Does anyone know where I can find the Netscape Web Server Plugins that are mentioned in the Webserver doc file? In Webserver it says " Like Apache, Netscape does not pass HTTP Authorization information to CGI scripts. We have a plugin at our website that addresses this. http://www.digicool.com ". DTML Q

Hmmmm. I've been trying to persuade DTML to do something like below. The context is a document which can post to itself and fill out any form defaults to appropriately.  <select NAME="selectSkill">  <OPTION VALUE=""   selected  >   </SELECT><BR>  skills_to_enter is a document property consisting of the tokens 1-10. Skills is a tiny table with a list of skill_id's and skills. The DTML above does not properly set the REQUEST.form key to a dynamic value. Is there a better to do this sort of thing? CSM

Guestbook Product

Has anyone else noticed that the GuestBook Product no longer works in 1.10? Is it just me or what?
