zope generating page with old data
by Florian Reiser 02 Sep '04

02 Sep '04

Hello zopistas, I have a page, that executes a job which calculates some numbers and then displays the resulting data in a table. The time of the calculation is recorded for each record in the db with a timestamp. Sometimes zope displays the timestamp of the previous calculation, mostly that of the actual calculation, which would be right. What can cause Zope to display the timestamp of the previous calculation. I use Zope 2.6.4 and ZODBCDA Regards Florian -- Supergnstige DSL-Tarife + WLAN-Router fr 0,- EUR* Jetzt zu GMX wechseln und sparen http://www.gmx.net/de/go/dsl

cookie crumbler - preserving variables in URL
by David Siedband 02 Sep '04

02 Sep '04

I'm using cookie crumbler for authentication Often, the pages that require authentication have a variables on the end of the URL. http://www.site.org/updateListing_html?pid=22 After authentication, these variables get dropped generating an error for the dropped variable redirects to: http://www.site.org/updateListing_html How can I modify the cookie crumbler methods to pass these variables and redirect to the proper URL? thanks -- David

Interest in continued Oracle support in Zope
by Dario Lopez-Kästen 02 Sep '04

02 Sep '04

[Sent to zope-db as well, this version better edited] Greets, ladies and gentlemen. I worry about the future of Oracle support in Zope, and in Python, too, for that matter. So I am wondering what interest there actually is for having Oracle support in Python/zope, I have a few questions: (Oracle support = having quality Oracle connectivity from python/Zope) 1) Does anyone else out there have a business case for using Oracle with Python/Zope? 2) Will those from (1) suffer badly, ie. will switch from Python or Zope to something else, if Oracle support in Python/Zope would dissapear? 3) Will those from (1) suffer badly, ie. will switch from Python or Zope to something else, if Oracle support is not improved? (ie less crashes, better throughput, etc). 4) Of those who say yes to at least one of 1-3, which ones can invest actual cash to create and maintain good quality Oracle Support in Python/Zope? 5) Of those who say yes to at least one of 1-3, which ones can invest *time* to create and maintain good quality Oracle Support in Python/Zope? What are the sentiments of other people on this list? I myself say yes to 1-3; however, at the moment I can only invest time (somewhat limited) and no cash. Also, I seem to be one of those that really stretch the limits on DCOracle2 - we use it super-extensivly for thousends of users, and seem to encounter all kinds of problems with it, ranging from lockups to connectivity loss. So I am interested in finding out if there actually are people using Oracle with Zope/Python and what their thoughts are. Thanks, /dario -- -- ------------------------------------------------------------------- Dario Lopez-Kästen, IT Systems & Services Chalmers University of Tech.

RE: [Zope] How do you replace content with an action?

That action is by clicking a link that will redefine the > variable with different content. > It sounds like you are confused between client and server actions. You are asking for something to happen after someone clicks a link on the page displayed in a browser - the client. At this point, Zope has replaced the page template with the actual markup for the web page, and has sent the page to the browser. There are no page variables or templates anymore. They are gone and forgotten. To get an action to happen on the browser, you have two possibilities - 1) Make it happen within the browser using javascript, or 2) Send a form from the browser to the server, and have the server (Zope)create a new page that contains the changes you want (as well as all the unchanged parts). 1) does not involve page templates at all, since it does not involve Zope in any way. You need to think more carefully about what you want to happen, and where it should happen. Then we can give you more useful help. Cheers, Tom P

My english is not very good and possibly I don't understand what you're trying to do. A TAL variable is a server side element while a click on a link is a client side event, and HTTP is a request/response protocol. When you click on a link there are no TAL variables, they have been destroyed when the page template processing has finished, so you can't change them from the client. However you can change the way the page template behaves (the values of the TAL variables) the next time a request is performed by adding something to the request that makes it "different" (a query_string parameter, a cookie ...). Try adding a parameter to the link. In the page template check if the parameter has been submitted, if not show view_pc_sql results, if yes show view_sortSysName. Here you should be careful when creating the batch links, they must include the parameter when required in order to show the next/previous results from the same query. Probably there are simpler solutions depending on what you're trying to do. RE: [Zope] Integrating Zope with Excel.
by Jean-Francois.Doyon＠CCRS.NRCan.gc.ca 02 Sep '04

I've had success with setting the timeout. The only thing that bugs me right now is that I can only set it globally. Right now I have a monkey patch that fixes up httplib with a default timeout, which makes it global to any httplib based request (such as urllib and urllib2 functionality). I also did the same with FTP. Now at least I don't worry that some bad request will lock up a thread for an inordinate amount of time, potentially forcing zope to eventually run out of threads. I really whish the Python API for socket based functionality would've followed to allow specifying the timeout for each request though, in fact I find it outright bizarre it didn't!! Foe exmaple you can't specify a timeout for a request done through urllib directly, since you can't have access to the socket before the request goes out. Anyways, all this to say that the problem of having Zope generating network connections and locking up threads is evry real, and given the current design, makes sense. I've been toying with the idea of implementing a framework that would fork threads or start a seperate process for executing these types of requests, and providing a consistent API for Zope, allowing things to be asynchronous, and protecting the core thread pool. In the world of web services, this would be most handy. Of course the performance impact vs. benefits would have to be studied. No matter, it's more work than I'm willing to take on though .. Maybe in Zope 3? Btw, I notice that even with socket.setdefaulttimeout(None), the requests eventually timed out after some minutes :-) Don't know how many, I didn't keep track. -- Paul Winkler http://www.slinkp.com _______________________________________________ Zope maillist - Zope(a)zope.org http://mail.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope ** No cross posts or HTML encoding! ** (Related lists - http://mail.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-announce http://mail.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-dev )

How do you replace content with an action?
by Laura McCord 02 Sep '04

02 Sep '04

I need to be able to replace the content of a defined variable with an action. That action is by clicking a link that will redefine the variable with different content. Here is an example: <div tal:define="results here/view_pc_sql"> <a href="" tal:define="global results here/view_sortSysName">link</a> <div tal:define=" start request/start|python:0; batch python:here.getBatch(results)"> Any ideas? Or has someone done this before? I have been stuck on this issue since Monday. Thanks.

Help...zope template problem
by Laura McCord 02 Sep '04

if I have this: <a href="" tal:define="test python:here.select(1)"> PCName </a> how can I use the variable 'test' after </a>? If it is not possible, is there another way of doing this based on a link that will give me the same functionality? Thanks.
