Another newby question about referring to the value of variables
by John Grey 26 Jan '04

26 Jan '04

Hi, First , thanks for everyone's help with my last two queries which solved the questions I had perfectly - I hope you can bear with me for one more... I am now trying to create a simple product which clones a tinytableplus. I have set it up similarly to the zoo exhibit example in the Zope book. apart from the stuff to redirect back, the add script includes only newgrid=context.manage_clone(container[source],id) where 'source' is a parameter passed from an 'add form' to determine which of several tinytables to use (these are in the product folder). This works if I try to add the product to the product folder itself by viewing and submitting the add form that calls the script but when I try to use the normal add product drop down list I get this error: Error Type: AttributeError Error Value: __getitem__ Everything works OK if I substitute the actual name of a tinytable (preceded by .) like this. newgrid=context.manage_clone(container.grid,id) I'd be very grateful for any ideas, thanks , John -- J o h n G r e y http://j-grey-pc.sunderland.ac.uk ---------------------------------

run multiple instances with zopectl

Hi, I'm running a debian woody box with zope 2.6.2 and zopectl 0.3.1. I've created a second config file in the /etc/zopectl directory containig the options for the second instance and created the files for it using 'zopectl init instance2'. But if I try to start the two zope instances the first (default) one comes up correctly and the second one dies after a few moments. 2004-01-25T23:42:09 PANIC(300) z2 Startup exception Traceback (innermost last): File /usr/lib/zope/z2.py, line 759, in ? Tutorial Instance
by SDA 26 Jan '04

26 Jan '04

Hello: I'm presently using Zope (unreleased version, python 2.2.3, linux2) from Debian "Sarge". Right from the get go, I had issues of it not working properly. The first was attempting to run the tutorial, I couldn't becasue it said the Gadfly database wasn't installed, it was. So I got around that, by creating a Gadfly directory in '/var/lib/zope/instance/default/var/'. Now, I get this error when trying to create the Tutorial instance: 'Invalid connection string: demo' Any suggestions as how to get around this? -- Stephen --------------------------------------------------------------------------- "You know the world is going crazy when the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, the tallest guy in the NBA is Chinese, the Swiss hold the Americas Cup, France is accusing the US of arrogance, Germany doesn't want to go to war, and the three most powerful men in America are named 'Bush', 'Dick', and 'Colon'" --unknown

Alessio, We are piloting a very similar system (plain Zope, no Plone). A few lessons we learned that you might benefit from: 1. Use DirectoryStorage for your ZODB. It is highly stable, scalable, resilient to corruption, easily backed up, etc, etc. The secret to its success is that it uses one file per Zope revision, rather than a single Data.fs. If you do so, you might also consider using reiserfs because it is better with large numbers of files. And there will be a lot! (I believe this only applies to Linux.) 2. Do not store binaries in the ZODB. Your ZODB will grow plenty large with metadata revisions without shoving files into it, too. Ours hit 20GB at one point because I forgot to pack it for a while. If at all possible, store the files themselves outside of Zope. 3. Use BTreeFolders if you can, to speed retrieval. This may not be an issue with Plone. 4. Investigate ZCatalogs thoroughly to make sure they meet your needs. We are about to jump ship in favor of a relational database, simply because ZCatalogs are not as well suited to our purposes. DBObjects and CMF
by Shane Landrum 26 Jan '04

Is anyone out there using the DBObjects relational-to-object mapping product ( http://www.zope.org/Members/srichter/Products/DBObjects )? Anyone using similar products? If so, how do they compare? I'm looking for some relational-to-object mapping code that will work nicely with my existing large-scale CMF instance. srl -- Shane Landrum, Software Engineer srl(a)boston.com boston.com / NY Times Digital

Also, an error occurred while attempting to render the standard error message.

I saw on the web that this error is a bug in Zope 2.6.0 it seems to be still present in 2.6.1 I dont want my users to ever see this terrible error message, is there ANY way around it, besides downgrading of course. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Ape problems

I installed Ape, created an images directory, and am repeatedly getting this error: * Module ZPublisher.Publish, line 102, in publish * Module Zope.App.startup, line 217, in commit * Module ZODB.Transaction, line 234, in commit * Module ZODB.Transaction, line 340, in _commit_begin * Module ZODB.Connection, line 452, in commit_sub * Module apelib.zope2.setup.TmpStore, line 66, in load OverflowError: requested number of bytes is more than a Python string can hold I think with Ape we will not need to run a python method, if we can distribute the dbtab.conf file and have the user install it (finding the right directory for it took me a while...). But it looks like Ape directories are global so the user would probably have to create one manually. It would be nicer if an Ape mount point could be created/administered entirely in the ZMI, without requiring the user to muck with the filesystem.
