Many of you may have seen it, but I stumbled across "Philip and Alex's Guide to Web Publishing":http://photo.net/wtr/thebook/index.html last night, and am in the process of reading it. It is a careful exposition of the principles underlying the kinds of sites I want to build, and which I think most Zope users would like to, as well. The old instances of your objects will have their __setstate__ methods called when they are activated from the database into memory. These are instances created with the _old_ code. But when they are activated, their _new_ setstate is called (because you just upgraded, right?) and that method can be prepared to take any action it wants to 'upgrade' the instance. Often this includes defining new instance variables and manipulating the object in some way by calling methods on 'self'. Upgrading a product

Ran into an interesting thought yesterday which I have not seen addressed in this discussion list. Let's say that I create a Zope product and create a distribution for it calling it version 1.0. All is well and good, this product becomes successful and it is in use across hundreds of Zope based web servers. Six months go by and through the assistance of my Open Source friends and my own coders, we have a brand new awesome version which we are calling version 2.0. This new version is installed and when a Zope server is restarted; all is well. Let's say the product allows you to create a container (product folder) which stores all of the primary methods and controls customized to your particular installation. In the container are the objects of interest with their own sets of properties. Here is the question. Our new version has new methods, properties and controls for the container and new objects for the container now have new properties to them. So that users of this product do not need to start from scratch, how would the old (version1) objects get upgraded to match new objects created under our new version 2 of the product? I can think of a few methods that all seem very ugly to me. I was hoping that someone has thought through this and may have some suggestions. Thanks a bunch.

Newbie : Zope publishing of Static pages

Hi all, I'm new to Zope, knows li'l bit of Python. Here is my situation, in a new job. 1) We have a fairly big site (25 departmental sections, 2000-1500 pages) 2) All the pages are static (Yeah! you want to change the look of pages in your site, you edit all these files, or call a perl regex master :-( 3)What we want is a publishing tool, which can help webmasters to maintain the site and to delegate responsibility to departmental contact points to maintain their sections. 4)From what I fiddled around with Zope, this is perfect tool. 5)But, we've an IIS server running which serves the pages. My question is, can I use Zope to manage the website? I know Zope stores the HTML pages in its own database (right?). What I love to have is some situation just like that, but all those facilities actually correspond to the files in the IIS root folder. (I checked localFS product, but I'm not sure how to use that for such a situation). One *silly* way is to go to each page in the Zope site, save the HTML in the IIS's root directory (He He! what about using "wget"?). But I think it is really a stupid solution, *I AM A ZOPE NEWBIE* !!! (but I can use that - make wget run every 2 hours to automatically update the site!). If you have some pointers, PLEASE let me know! (Well, all this can be avoided if I'm able to use Zserver to serve up pages - for reasons I can't explain, I need to stick to IIS. ZSybase DA w/ Suse Linux

Dear Sirs, following on the reply of Mike Pelletier: yes the password given in the password file is: '%s' I downloaded Zope for Linux about 2 months ago (sorry, don't now the version because I am in my office), but it was only yesterday that I installed it. Unfortunately the command "python zpasswd.py access" reports an error. Shall I maybe just delete the installation and download a newer version of Zope? manage_add_users won't work

whenever i try to use <dtml-call "manage_users([submit, REQUEST, RESPONSE])"> , i fail miserably, getting the following error and the traceback below .. Error Type: NameError Error Value: URL I think submit and REQUEST both are ok.. submit = 'Add' and REQUEST contains name, password, confirm, roles and domains.. Please help.. I asked about a similar problem a couple of weeks ago, but nobody answered. I've tried everything i can think of. ZCatalog and permissions

Hi there, I'm using a ZCatalog in Zope 2.1 to catalog a site. I set it so that it would only catalog objects where Anonymous has permission 'access contents information'. If I do that, however, it doesn't seem to work right. Only a few objects (if any) get catalogued, instead of all of them. Can anyone explain? Or is this a bug? Regards, Martijn
