Install questions

Okay, I've got a few questions. Install.txt says to unzip Zope "Find a software installation directory that is *not* accessible to your web server, such as '/usr/local/dc'." On my server, public files are in public_html. Is it suggested that I unzip Zope in the directory above public_html? Next, the install.txt says to run install. None of the switches seem to work. When you run 'start --help' you get completely different switches than what is stated in install.txt. I've read the file twice and tried different switches, but I can't get it to work. Lastly, my next task is to get Apache and FastCGI working. Yuck! Anyway, the webserver.txt says "A version more recent than 2.2.2 is needed." The FastCgi site says the most current version is 2.2.2. Where can I get a higher version? Thanks! Multiple Zope servers?

Hi, This is a general question. I am a newbie in Zope, I apologize if I miss something obvious. If a website eventually becomes big and needs several servers to handle the requests, what would be the ideal configuration for Zope? Can one run several copies of Zope on different machines, all sharing the same Data.fs database file? If so, how does one do it? Would it be reasonable to use: (1) An Apache server machine to handle the incoming requests. (2) A number of Zope server machines (say, 3 machines) that receive the requests coming from the Apache. (3) A single Database/File server machine. The basic idea is that I want the website to be scalable, so if the load becomes heavy, one can just add more servers to aliviate the situation. For the above configuration, how many copies of PCGI needs to be running? overwriting images revisited

I have trolled through the mailing list archives (wish this stuff was in the docs!!), I found some references to the use of manage_addImage and the manage_upload methods....just enought o get myself into trouble it seems. I have a form that prompts users for <input type="text" name="id" size="20"> <input type="file" name="image"> i.e. id is the name of image, and file is the file to be uploaded to Zope. the action of this form is the added_new_staff method below : <dtml-with REQUEST> <dtml-with form> <dtml-if "REQUEST.has_key('image')"> <dtml-if "(REQUEST.image.seek(0, 2) or REQUEST.image.tell()) > 0">   <dtml-else>  <dtml-with "_[id]">  </dtml-with> </dtml-if> </dtml-if> </dtml-with> </dtml-with> if the image doesn't exist, then it is uploaded through manage_addImage - this part works well. But if the image is found, then unfortnately the manage_upload doesn't work for me. I get the error : Error Type: Bad Request Error Value: The id test is invalid - it is already in use. I would like to be able to overwrite existing images. Am I making any obvious mistakes here ? thanks for any help, Darcy

rendering ZClass property

Hi everyone, I'm trying to diplay a property of a ZClass based on whether another property exists or not. In essence: if foo_property exists print bar_property Foo_ and bar_property are both properties of the same ZClass. [Newbie] Making a python web application with Zope

Hello all, I've been playing with Zope for a few weeks now...I really like it ! The problem I have is that, given a problem, I don't know what Zope technology I should use... Here is my problem : I have designed a small object application with UML. I then have implemented it in python. Only the business rules of my application are written yet (no UI nor GUI). The whole application source is made of 3 python files (.py). Python objects are persistent and stored into a file using the shelves mechanism (that I found to be very simple and handy). I test the core of my application in the console, invoking methods of my objects. Storage is correct, etc... Now that I know that my application "could" work (=all the business rules and methods have the correct behaviour), I want to access it through the web (=make a web application). I would like to use Zope to do so. First, I can modify my existing python code (to make it compliant with any Zope mandatory things - that I don't know yet !). [1 - Dealing with the Storage of my Objects] I don't want to deal with any Relational storage directly. I would like to go on using a full object approach : to have persistent python objects. Use of OQL would be nice, but not mandatory for my first needs. At last, I don't want to have to store/retrieve my objects from a SQL database by hand...The persistent mechanism should be as easy to use and handle as the shelves one(I don't need to use shelves in particular - I just want an object-storage mechanism). There is no need for me to have access to the today-existing datas (that were store in files from the shelves mechanism). [ 2 - Dealing with the visual HTML representation of my objects ] I would like to have a strong frontier between the rendering of data (=production of HTML code) and the logic of my application (=python code that handles the life of my objects). [ 3 - Reusability - Luxe ] I would also like to be able to use the same python code in both the console and web version (not mandatory). Given this, I don't know what Zope mechanism is best for me : ZClasses ?, ZCatalog ? External method ? Other ? Should I make a product ? Where can I put my existing python code ? How will I deploy it to several sites ? How do I store my business objects into ZODB ? If I am not clear enough : you can flame me ! I will explain it again :-) Please help ! Thanx for your support. advanced web database question

This problem bothered me for quite a long. I hope somebody can help me out. Here is my project: in FIRST page, I have table name list (using Radio to get user feedback). User clicks any of the table name and click submit button, he will be redirected to the second page. in SECOND page, I have bunch of fields list (using Checkbox to get user feedback), which are associated with that table. After user chooses field / fields and submit it, he should be able to see the result table in the THIRD page. FIRST page and SECOND page use table TableDef in database DB1; while THIRD page uses database DB2. I can pass the table name from FIRST page to SECOND one by using FORM, and I can pass field/fields name from SEOND page to the THIRD page by using FORM too. But my question is How I can pass table name from FIRST page to the THIRD page because I have to use table name in the THIRD page. ( SQL query is: SELECT <dtml-var FieldsName> FROM <dtml-var TableName>; ) I try to use External Method to remember something. But it didn't work out. Any help is highly appreicated. --David

Don't forget to register for the Python conference!
