__cmp__ methods being ignored?

Hi, I posted about this to -dev a little while ago but received no response. I've got a Python class that I'm using in Zope, which defines it's own __cmp__ method. However this method doesn't appear to be being called when Zope tests for equality. Is this a bug or a feature? Is there some way I can get around this? The situation is that I have some of these objects in an array attribute of another object. If I try and compare an object that I Acquired to one that's in the list, it fails as I'm comparing an object of my type to one of ImplicitAcquirerWrapper. However, if my __cmp__ method were being used in the equality test, they'd match (I checked this). I also tried setting __repr__. This worked as I'd expect it to but didn't affect the equality test. sample web applications ?

Thanks for those who answered my OO vs RDBMS question.. Now another one, is there anywhere where I can get my hands on sample web applications that I could download and look at? I guess as any newbie does, I'm stumbling along trying to glue all the pieces of the puzzle together, where to use products/dtml/external methods etc.. it just doesn't seem to be gelling yet... I don't think that the sample outline application that comes with Zope really illustrates what zope can/should be used for. It does show the object acquisition if you really look at the tree/dtcontent/dttemplate stuff but it's not immediately obvious. Stephen - First, thanks for the help. I'm lost. I created a DTML Document in a folder called "eScream". The whole contents of this document are: <dtml-in use_cases> <dtml-var "_['sequence-item'].id"> </dtml-in> There's a folder called use_cases in the current folder. In use_cases, there are a bunch of DTML Methods. When I run the code above, I get this error: Error Type: TypeError Error Value: hasattr, argument 2: expected string, int found So I'm thinking maybe I'm too far gone. Maybe I don't know what I thought I knew I thought about. Here's the traceback. Any ideas? Suggestion for standard Product documentation mechanism

There's been a good bit of discussion about Zope documentation on the list recently, and improved documentation of the core Zope distribution would certainly be a great thing. However, part of the attraction of Zope are the available extensions in the form of Zope Products. Documentation for these is also important, whether they're being used as is or as a basis for customization, but it's very difficult for these authors to commit the time required to create separate docs. As a result, it's difficult to figure out the structure and workings of most Products. To make Product documentation easier, I propose the following: When a product is installed, there should be a standard mechanism that creates a "Doc" tab with a page containing information compiled from the Product distribution. The first element on the doc page should be a brief overview of the Product, which would be taken from a text or html file in the product directory with a standard name (docs!.html or docs!.doc, for example). The second element should be a listing by name of all dtml pages and methods in the Product with brief explanatory text. The text should be derived from the contents of a dtml tag in each page that functions like a doc string (perhaps a <dtml-doc> tag). The third and last element should be a listing by name of all python modules in the Product with each name followed by the doc string of the module. Indented under each module should be a listing of all callable top level functions in the module with the corresponding doc strings and all classes with their doc strings. Indented under each class should be all callable functions within the class, with their doc strings. Thus at import, the names and doc strings of the elements of the Product would be extracted and collected into a doc page with this organization: Brief description (from file) DTML Page(s) -- each with "dtml doc string" DTML Method(s) -- each with "dtml doc string" FirstPythonModuleName -- doc string Func def 1 -- doc string Func def 2 -- doc string Class def 1 -- doc string Class func 1 -- doc string Class def 2 -- doc string SecondPythonModuleName -- doc string etc. This approach to documentation has the advantage of exposing the overall structure of a Product in addition to documenting its internals. Having the documentation method use doc strings makes it easier to maintain brief but useful documentation and keep that documentation up to date as code is revised. Of course there would need to be some guidelines about how to set up the doc strings (the standard python format would be a decent start) and conventions such as showing what imports what in module doc strings might be helpful. I got started thinking about this when I was trying to customize Squishdot in some fairly simple ways, but ended up having to bother the author (who was very helpful) about where certain functionality was located. While the approach I suggest here doesn't completely take the place of well-written standalone documentation, it could provide a lot of information with substantially less effort, is easier to maintain in the setting of iterative code development, and is consistent with the open source concept of multiple authors extending code's functionality. Hi Rik, Just wanted to let you know you're _completely_ wrong :-). "Changing context in Zope" is exactly what I was looking for and I find myself referencing it frequently. I'll take your points seriously though: after fiddling with Zope for some weeks now I've found some errors in some documentation and I'll contact the authors off-list. I must say I'm quite satisfied with the Zope documentation. It's fragmented, yes, but there's a lot of it. I've got a big pile of printouts on my desk, bigger than anything available for PHP e.g., and it's just a subset of what can be gotten from the Zope site. I for one attribute my difficulties in implementing Zope more to the complexity and huge feature-set of the Zope engine, than to a lack of documentation. apache fastcgi and -pass-header

I've been trying to get apache, fastcgi, and zope to all play kindly with each other. So far things have gone fairly smootly, but i've gotten stuck with the '-pass-header' tag i'm suppose to include on the FastCgiExternalServer line in my httpd.conf file. Whenever i add this tag, apache gripes by saying: FastCgiExternalServer: invalid option: -pass-header I suppose i could just leave these out and try to access the zope server directly when i need to authenticate, but it would be nice if i could get it working right. Thanks sRp btw, zope simply rocks! I'm currently trying to sell the rest of the is department here at the school on it so that they don't do something stupid like go out and buy spectra.
