hi everyone, since all is so quiet in zope-land... let me throw out a question here :) what is the best way to upgrade (in my case from 2.0.0a3 to b1) an existing site without endangering the existing objects? i'm running it on RH6. Jens Vagelpohl

Solid DA install help

Does anyone have the Solid DA adapter configured to work with Zope 2.00b1 and Solid 2.3? I can make the sql.so with the following output. # make gcc -fpic -DSOLIDSQLAPI -I/usr/local/solid/include -g -O2 -I/usr/local/include/python1.5 -I/usr/local/include/python1.5 -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -c ./sql.c ./sql.c: In function `SQLBindInputParameter': ./sql.c:1360: warning: assignment from incompatible pointer type gcc -shared sql.o -L/usr/local/solid/lib -lsolcli -o sql.so When I try to test the sql.so, I get the following. #python1.5.2 Python 1.5.2 (#5, Jun 23 1999, 15:59:20) [GCC egcs-2.91.66 19990314/Linux (egcs- on linux2 Copyright 1991-1995 Stichting Mathematisch Centrum, Amsterdam >>> import sql Traceback (innermost last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in ? ImportError: libsolcli.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I have "swig"ed the sql.c sql.i files with no further luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Linux can't dynamicly link programs to their required libraries unless you tell it where to look. Alternatively, and this works on Solaris too, you can add the path to the library to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable. -Michel

Strange as this sounds, it would probably be a better idea to store a hit counterish thingy in a realtional database, because the Zope database is transactional, and keep *all* previous versions of objects in the database (this is so you can 'undo') therefor, if you incriment an object on every hit, your database will grow a little on every hit. Postgres is version 6.4.2-5. ZPyGreSQLDA version is 0.3. Zope 2.0.0b1 and Zope 1.10.3 I also have python-PyGreSQL-2.3.2.rpm installed. I got it from rufus.w3.org. I removed it thinking that it conflicted or caused the problem. But removing it didn't seem to help so I reinstalled the package. I haven't tried yet but I'm going to write an external method and see if that works. Hi! I want to get a value from the database, increment it by one, and store it back into the database. Is there a way to do this purely in DTML, or do I have to use External Methods? Thanks! Donner

Structuring Zope objects (Actors?) for global access

I was wondering what the best practice is for allowing access to Zope objects from anywhere in the hierarchy? I intend to be able to put methods such as 'upload', 'mcq' and 'edit' at the end of URLs and have them do the appropriate things to that object at that URL (if it's permissable). eg /guides/s1ot/e47/e56/edit will edit the XML representation of a part of a study guide and /guides/s1ot/theme3/mcq will show all multiple choice questions associated with a specific section of the course. Normally I would put the objects at the top level of the tree, but having seen mentions made of UML and Actors on the list, I decided to look into that a bit more. It seems that you should do something like /guides/s1ot/e46/e56/Actors/edit and /guides/s1ot/theme3/Actors/mcq, having first put your methods etc into a folder called Actors at the top level of the hierarchy. Is this the 'Zopish' way of doing things? I mean, is this the proper way to manage these objects? (I'd like to get these fundamentals sorted out before embarking on the big stuff!).
