Very likely. I haven't dealt with BLOB's or other large-objects in Oracle 8, but I have done it (a little bit) in Sybase. Well, a text BLOB (field of type 'text'). If it's textual data, you might not need a BLOB since the first B stands for Binary. See first if Oracle has a long-text data type (not VARCHAR2(6000) :-) and try using that instead. I have used this with sqlvar's string and nb type before to stuff Pickled versions of data input from humungous HTML forms, and it worked fine. Then, I'd use the 'Test' view (tab) of the SQL method since that will show you the SQL rendered by Zope and sent to the DA. This way you can see how it's formatting your data. I'm pretty sure that a SQLVAR of type String or NB will not work with BLOB's because part of SQLVAR's job is to type-check (ie, making sure that the character 'a' isn't being sent t o a type 'float') and quote (in the case of strings). So if BODY's value is "bill's bike shop",  will render:: 'bill''s bike shop' The surrounding single-quotes are automatically inserted, and any single-quotes inside the string are properly escaped (from ' to ''). I'd bet that Oracle is seeing the quotes and percieving the insertion of a text value where it's expecting Binary. So my suggestions are (and again, I'm nothing close to an Oracle guru): - See if there's a textual equivalent of BLOB for storing text of large and unknown sizes in Oracle. (In Sybase, this a type 'text'). If there is and you can change the column type to that, I would recommend this first since sqlvar will work (again, it does with Sybase. Not sure about Oracle. It's a good thing that the S in SQL doesn't stand for 'standard':) - Or, look at the SQL being generated by the SQL Method when you try to do the insert and compare that with how you would do it by hand in Oracle. If it doesn't look right, try using a normal #var tag instead. Keep in mind that Binary objects in databases may have to be formatted specially and Zope doesn't automatically handle this. Improving the folder view

As my folders grow in size, I become increasingly annoyed and frustrated with the folder object view's propensity towards disorganization. :-) Is an improvement of this system planned? I have a few suggestions myself. - First of all, only icons are used to distinguish between types of objects. Even GUIs that aspire to object-orientation do not make this error; MacOS, Windows, KDE etc. all provide a separate column displaying objects' types. - Secondly, items are currently shown like so: "Id (Title)". As in: "acl_users (User Folder)". As the list grows, this system becomes exceedingly difficult to "read fast". Reading stuff fast is important as the amount of stuff your brain has to sift through grows. If we can assist the brain in being able to sort this data, we should do it. So we should put the ID and title in separate columns. - Finally there is the sorting. Zope currently sorts case-sensitively, which means if you have "Article", "Documents", "acl_users", then that's exactly the sort order you'd get. The logical sorting method would be "acl_users", "Article", "Document". In most GUIs it is also common to -- at least as an option -- group directories together at the top. So if Documents and acl_users were folders, the order would be "acl_users", "Documents", "Article". In case there is doubt in your minds about the practical effect of such changes, I've prepared a demonstration, here:: http://www.mop.no/~alex/soaptest/oldversion.html (this is how things are done today) http://www.mop.no/~alex/soaptest/newversion.html (this is the proposed reorg) While we're at it, columns for "last modified" and "author" would be nice, too. I envision a system where you would define columns and sort settings in the control panel somehow. Zope Product Library With the progress made on Zope2 and the Zope Portal Toolkit (PTK), we've made enough progress to begin construction of a "Freshmeat" package library for Zope software. (Note: the jargon of "product", "package", "release", and "version" is awfully contentious.) Since this is effectively the same ground being covered here, I'd like to take a moment to describe what we are doing and see if folks here on the Python list find it interesting. I'll also cross-post to the Zope list. The desired outcome is for our experience and software to provide a boost to a real effort. (Historical note: I was the shepherd for the original ill-fated "Locator-SIG".) Goals o Fast location of desired software o Keep central admin requirements *low* by distributing control o Allow package authors to administer their entries o Adhere to appropriate standards and initiatives Zope Product Library In our system, Authors create Products and provide Releases of those Products. A Release is a version of a Product for a platform (if binary) or a source version in some packaging scheme (such as RPM). Thus, a Release is the bits and a Product is the container for all information about those bits. The things capitalized in the above are "ZClasses". For you non-Zopistas, a ZClass is like a Python class that you build through the web and store in the Zope object database. It is an instance that can make instances. It also provides a simple way to store "your kinds of things" in the Zope object database. The private, under-construction new zope.org site has a membership system where we give people a Zope home folder to stash their stuff. They pick from a list of things they can add, such as uploaded images, HTML documents, etc. People with higher privilege -- such as an Author -- can also choose "Product" from the list of things they can add to their folder. When they do so, the Product gets added to the site catalog. A Product is like a folder -- you can stick a home page, other docs, PDF files, etc. in it. More importantly, inside a Product you can add a Release. This will provide the kind of thing seen in Freshmeat. Thanks to acquisition, much of the information about a Release (author name and email, description, etc. ) comes from the Product and doesn't have to be repeated. The ZCatalog is awfully useful for this kind of system. First, it is (almost) always up-to-date. Whenever you add a Product or Release, or edit one, or delete one, the Zope transaction also updates the catalog. Next, ZCatalog's indexing engine does both fielded and full-text searches. Another nice feature is that objects control how they are indexed, as the Catalog is calling methods on the site content to get at indexed content. For instance, if you decided you'd like to untar the release and index the docstrings, go right ahead. As long as you can implement a Python method to do it. If you want the full-text to actually come from four properties about a Product, piece of cake. If you want to create a Remote Product listing, where the content is retrieved by urllib for indexing, you can quickly do that as well. Once the content is in the ZCatalog, well, Bob's your uncle. You can create multiple interactive search forms. You can query the catalog to insert a tree on a page for browsing the contents. You can create multiple presentations (by date like Slashdot and Freshmeat, by category like ODP, by author, by platform, etc.) More interestingly, you can get the Catalog to dish up requests as RDF. Imagine browsing the package library using the tree control in Mozilla, which gets fed by RDF. Or, imagine a command-line Python script that acts like rpmfind. What About Trove and ZTrove? This isn't Trove. This *could* be Trove, but we are focused on getting something in place fast on zope.org. We are solving our own problems first. Once we have made all our mistakes and learned from them, it would definately be time to talk about Trove and a Python package locator. ZCatalog The main advance that allows a high-end package system is the "ZCatalog", http://www.zope.org/Download/ZCatalog/ZCatalogTutorial. This tutorial provides a good rundown of all the neat things about the catalog. Does the Catalog scale? We think so, but that's a hard question. We have a *lot* of painful, painful experience in this area, based on a big consulting job we did a few years ago, and those lessons are reflected in the software. Our indexing works very hard at keeping memory footprint moderately in check and dishing up incredibly fast searches. As a datapoint, we took a 15 Mb chunk of the rufus RPM database and loaded it into the indexer. A combination fielded and full-text search took 0.004 seconds on a PII-350 (inside the indexer, formatting the response and returning it took a lot longer). CPAN and rufus.w3.org It appears to me that CPAN does the following functions: o Software repository for Perl code o Mirrored worldwide o Routes requests to a correct, available archive A related system that I know more about is rufus.w3.org's RPM database. It adds a particularly useful feature that I *think* CPAN has: a command-line tool to query repositories and fetch packages for installation. I unfortunately don't know much about the workflow of how package listings get into the repository, then how they get updated. I'll observe that the searchability for both of these systems is awfully weak. For us in Zopeland, this is a major opportunity. The Mythical Python Locator So, what exactly *is* being looked for here? A simple package registry? Something integrated with dist-utils? How much should this system scale? What standards should it piggy-back? Is it centralized or decentralized, both in implementation and administration? What jargon do we agree to and what is the metadata we will choose? And most important, is anybody willing to actually work on it? In closing, though I'm skeptical that this will move from "brief flurry of activity" into accomplished project, I think this is an area where a definate disadvantage can be turned into a clear advantage. The goal shouldn't be just to catch up. The goal should be go farther, to show off and taunt, then to rub the others' noses in it. :^)

getting all form data (ZPublisher)

Hi! How could I get access to form data in a ZPublisher module (I don't use zope, only ZopeHTTPServer and ZPublisher)? I want to make a simple module which puts all the data submitted through a form file. Example: http://127.0.0.1:9673/write?field1=heisst&field2=hier&field3=jemand&fiel d4=duentsch File output.txt: field1 heisst field2 hier field3 jemand field4 duentsch The fields name should not be hardcoded in the module. Apache will start, if I configure the server name, so I don't think it's a problem with my windows setup. There is no other server running on this machine. Maybe I should mention it's a Windows 95 machine. I think there are less problems with Windows NT, but I don't want to install NT for testing some Z stuff. T get the same error with the medusa server from medusa-src-990517.tar.gz. I will ask Sam Rushing, maybe he could help.

I tried to setup ZServer from the Zope-2.0.0a3-src.tgz archive. I untarred only the Zserver and the lib/python/ZPublisher directory (don't want to use Zope now, only ZPublisher). I get the following error when I execute the start.py (renamed to zserver.py). Any idea what could be wrong with my configuration? By dynamic pages, I meant those pages which the content changes based upon various variables, which sould be useless if cached. The cache parameters are managed via the control panel. For example, the links page on www.libc.org is generated from an SQL query. IMO, this should not be cached, since I could forsee problems if it were (more so in other cases but you get the idea). Given that the SQL queries are done using Python, and there is no additional overhead.
