Please note that Python has a global interpreter lock, which means that even if the program is multi-threaded, only one thread can be interpreting python code at at time. distinguishing users from same ip

Is there any way to distinguish between anonymous users from the same ip? I'm planning on using zope to allow schoolkids to access a tax planning model. Most machines have their own ip, but some may allow multiple simultaneous access (eg Linux boxes). An alternative might be to allow some kind of user login. -- Robin Becker

Can I change the authentication realm programmatically?

Hi all, I need to interface with some systems that have their own authentication systems (.htaccess of all things - they can't get mod_perl to work properly, sigh). Unfortunately, the realm that they've chosen is not 'Zope' :) What I'd like to do is authenticate against the realm that they've chosen by using the UserDB product. Then just jump to their pages and (hopefully) because I'm using the correct realm, I'll be let into their system. Trouble is, I can't figure out where to fill in the gap realm='SST Tutor', it seems that 'Zope' is hard-coded in to the source. pcgi_publisher blocks?

i tried bashing zope.1.10.3 running with apache 1.3.6 some by doing this: in index_html:    ...  (like 30 time or so) ------------------------ and in p    ...  (like 100 times) ------------------------ and in p2 asdfasdfasdf<BR> so, to me, that makes like requesting index_html would result in 30.000 lines of text. fine. but for several minutes, this is what was happening: 13694 apache -25 0 32M 30M run 14:39 92.48% 91.68% python ... the pcgi_publisher? i don't know, actually, but that's what i would assume. problem is, i did this: kill 13694 and now Zope won't start, so i cannot reproduce the error. all i get is this error message: <html> <head> <title>exceptions.ImportError</title> </head> <body> Sorry, a SERIOUS APPLICATION ERROR occurred.<p>  </body> </html> ... and that happens although that files is most definitely present. can anyone help? i'd really appreciate that. and one more question: when does Zope serialize incoming requests? what exactly will happen when i request an object that will result in a large and time-intensive sql query being send to an external relational database - will the orb stop accepting requests until that one request has been dealt with? why did Zope just block when i requested index_html as in the the example above? thanks ruben

calendar problems

I tried the following simple examples with #calendar   gives an unknown timezone error. I'm using zope2 under win95 osr2.   appears, but any selection on the widget causes errors of the form Error Type: DateTimeError Error Value: Invalid date: 1999-7-7 what am I doing wrong? -- Robin Becker

You can easily write an "urlput()" function wrapping around calls to httplib, which definitely supports PUTs. (In fact, urllib's urlopen() is itself mainly just a thin wrapper around httplib and ftplib.) If you do a "Open in New Window" Netscape will do just that -- open another window; it'll run inside the same process and share the resources of the previous window. What you should do is simply start a new copy of Netscape. Hello, another set of newbie questions from somebody who's just begun with Zope: If I try to aim for moderately good (or beyond that) performance with Zope, what should I use for data storate (Z ODB3, MySql)? What about http-server, if perfomance needs to be fast for multiple concurrent dynamic pages with a lot of persistent storage access? Apache, Medusa, something else? Also, will I benefit (performance wise) from running Zope under Linux in a 2 CPU SMP configuration? (i.e. is it multithreaded properly to take advantage of more than one cpu)?
