Status of official documentation

Hello zopers! What's going on with the Zope Guides? Does anyone have the "scoop"? I understand that some time ago there was a initiative within D.C. to work on the docs - what came of that? It seems the ZDP is steadily picking up speed, and even I'd like to contribute, but I feel I don't yet know nearly enough about Zope at all to make any contribution. Unfortunately I'm one of those people that can only learn well either by a.) taking it apart, and trying to put it back together, b.) pushing all kinds of buttons and watching what happens, or c.) reading some extensive documentation with lots of examples. I can't take Zope apart and there aren't any neat little buttons to push; it seems to me that the cosmic complexity of Zope bundled with a lack of complete documents (no offense, Pam...) make insignificant little newbies like my twirl in a circle of confusion and fall over......help? I've made a ZClass which subclasses Folder (and CatalogAware). I'd like to be able to specify a title for each instance that is created (always the same title). I have used manage_edit() in the ZClasses' add constructor before, but I can't find the syntax for Folder's manage_edit()... ZCatalog Confusion Solved

Recently I posted a question about why my ZCatalog search wasn't behaving the way I had expected. I was trying to find items with had a particular meta-type and particular values for a couple of ZClass properties. It turns out that I had defined the properties in the Meta Data Table but I didn't define them as field indexes in the Indexes area. I assume that since I hadn't specified my properties as indexes, when the catalog search was performed it simply ignored those values and only used the meta_type specification and this is why all items were returned rather than the one I expected. When I added the field indexes the search behaved as expected. A careful re-reading of the ZCatalog tutorial helped me solve this one. James W. DTML editing tips, for emacs or otherwise?

hello, how do people usually edit dtml? the form interface is ok for tweaks and testing, but i don't imagine anyone uses it for anything over a dozen or so lines. i usually edit with joe or emacs. joe doesn't support ftp transparently so that would be a bit painful. emacs would be good, except psgml aka sgml-mode doesn't seem to get along with the dtml tags very well, at least without some further education. if i use a html 4 dtd, it doesn't know about dtml tags and the indentation magic thinks they all have to be closed. so after each <dtm-var> everything gets indented a step further.. i'm no sgml or emacs wizard, has anyone hacked the dtml tags into a html dtd, or alternatively is there a dtml-mode somewhere? i found a 0.01 version of a dtml-mode but it only seemed to support the ugly  syntax. also, if zope is running on another machine, ftp is insecure. is there any way to prevent stuff from being transmitted in the clear? zope is very interesting, it seems silly that there isn't a nicer system for editing in place, considering that editing is the thing you spend most of the time doing :) or am i missing something? actually, the best thing would be if i could just edit stuff on the local filesystem, but as i understand there's now way of having dtml documents there? cheers, -- erno PS. please cc me as i'm not on the list (i'm reading the archives)

ZCatalog Confusion

I'm starting to experiment with ZCatalogs as a way to organize and access some content on my web site. I've created a ZCatalog and had it index some key attributes of some ZClass instances that I have created. Currently my catalog has 4 entries. Elsewhere I have some code which is attempting to extract ZClasses with specific attributes. In my particular case my ZClasses are news articles and each article has a 'section' attribute which indicates where the article should be viewed. I have a DTMLMethod which looks like this: <dtml-in "ArticleIndex(meta_type='Article', section='Restaurant Review', publicationDate=_['publicationDate'])"> <dtml-return "ArticleIndex.getpath(data_record_id_)"> </dtml-in> This method is implemented in an "issue" object which, among other things, defines a property called "publicationDate". There is only one 'Article' which has a section of 'Restaurant Review'. As such, my assumption was that this method would return the url of the article with a section property of 'Restaurant Review'. Unfortunately this isn't the case. Upon further debugging, I find that this loop is iterating over *all* items in the catalog rather than finding the one entry with the proper section value. My obvious question is why? From what I've read, my statement should only return a collection of objects who have a meta_type of Article, a section value of 'Restaurant Review' and a publication date equal to the publication date of my issue. Can someone explain why my request to the catalog is returning objects which don't meet all the requirements? Thanks. James W. Use of Tokens

Hi all! I have a strange error using tokens as parameters. I am trying to pass to an SQLMethod a parameter typed as token (MyParam:tokens) and the sqlmethod work fine inside the zope environment. You can see the SQLMethod (1) ,if you want, at the end of the message. Then I declared an DTMLMethod by wich the user can input the words to pass to MyParam. You can see the DTMLMethod (2) at the end of the message But from the input form, as soon as I run the SQLMethod I have got the following error: Zope Error Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. Error Type: InError Error Value: Strings are not allowed as input to the in tag. What am I doing wrong? refering to the id of the enclosing folder in a tree tag

If I have a folder structure like this a a1 a2 a3 b etc. Using a treetag to traverse this how can I refer to the id of the enclosing folder (that is the folder dat contains the 'current' element? I tried this: <dtml-tree reports branches_expr="objectValues(['Folder'])" > <dtml-var "PARENTS[0].id"> <dtml-var id> </dtml-tree> but that gives the id of the folder containing the method which contains this DTML snippet.
