I have a bunch of "link" objects (based on a ZClass) in a folder. Each has a "name", "description", "address", and "keywords" property (the latter is of type "tokens", which sounds good, but I have no idea if that's what it is for, since I have yet to find the docs on those types). I can easily get the links sorted by name, e.g., <dtml-in "objectItems('Link')" sort=name> So how would I get with something like this: Keyword1: Link1 Link3 Link27 Link29 Keyword2: Link4 Link5 Link19 Link27 Note that Link27 has both Keyword1 and Keyword2 in the Keywords property. I could certainly do something like this with an SQL thingy, but I'd just as soon use Zope's built in Object Database. SQL Server Adapter

Has anyone found a way of connecting to MS SQL or some other decent PC DB without using the thunked ODBC Adapter. I really need a way around this as the load on my site is increasing and this bottleneck is making my Zope powered server look like a real dog.

""" return [ 'baz', 'bam', qux' ] Then, in Zope's Control Panel | Products | FooProduct, add an ExternalMethod, BarTypes: Title = <<empty -- put parameters here if you use 'em>> Function Name = BarTypes Python Module File = FooProduct.Utilities Finally, in the property sheet of ZClass FooProduct.Bar, add a property barType, selecting the 'selection' drop down and entering 'BarTypes' into the 'Value' field -- the property sheet will then use the BarTypes method to populate its dropdown. NOTE: I currently have to clone the ExternalMethod into the FooProduct.Bar class to make it usable from the location in which a FooProduct.Bar instance lives! They are on the filesystem, for Image object probably in lib/python/OFS. I wouldn't change the documents on file, but rather copy them into new methods of your new class and override the behavior you wish to 'tweak'. -Michel

Zope and Midgard article in IT WEEK (UK)

The first sighting (by me anyway) of anything about Zope in a UK computer mag. See article by Lee Kimber entitled "An app server free-for-all" in 17 Jan issue of IT Week or http://www.zdnet.co.uk/itweek/analysis/2000/02/internet/ (the paper version features a mugshot of Paul Everitt and so is clearly a must-have for true Zope groupies ;-) ) I thought the final paragraphs were an interesting take: "[But] both Zope and Midgard rely on easily learned and well-known scripting languages for even the most technical aspects of their configuration. That puts them just a short climb up the learning curve for those developers who built today's Web applications using Perl CGI scripts. That ease of development raises another, intriguing possibility: that companies that want to add features will be able to do so with the same ease that Microsoft's Visual Basic made possible when companies wanted to build custom business applications out of Microsoft's Office In making Visual Basic so accessible, Microsoft spawned an entire VB office application industry. Only time will tell whether Zope and Midgard are about to do the same for application servers. " Incidentally, the article is completely devoid of the J-word .... Yes, this is a common new user error. It is often manefisted by using the wrong URLx value (like URL instead of URL1 etc). This makes an object, or set of objects, acquire from itself: http://host/object/object/object/object.... or http://host/A/B/A/B/A/B... Threre is nothing inheritly wrong in this, you will allways get the correct object (and I beleive acquisition is smart enough to short circuit an object wrapped by itself) but it is a programming error, and eventually web servers and clients will complain about URL being too long (there is no rfc defined standard URL 'maximum' length). -Michel
