Zope has Users, Roles and Permissions. Users have Roles, and various Roles have Permissions mapped to them. At any time a User is allowed to do anything that the union of the permissions of their roles allows them to do. Using your example, you can create a "Subscriber" role that has more permissions than "Anonymous" does. When someone gives you money, you give them the Subscriber role and voila, they are allowed to do things that only Subscribers can do, because they have the role. No, you don't need to write your own CGI interface, in fact Zope removes all need to ever think about CGI again. I haven't messed with it for years. PosgreSQL has a native "text" data type that can grow to a large size transparently. Accessing records of this type should be very effective as a means of publishing raw text, formatted via DTML. It should be fairly easy to store huge volumes of text in PostgrSQL while the size of the Zope ODBMS remains much smaller, since it only needs to store the presentation pieces. I don't know enough about ZCatalog yet to say whether you could successfully integrate the two, but perhaps some of the other interesting native features of PostgreSQL could stand in, since indexing is what DMSs do best.

Which is faster: ZServer-1-thread, or Apache/PCGI

The problem here is that all of these accents and things are all very language dependent, there is no way for software to know that 'e' with an accend and 'e' without are sybolicly based on the same letter, to the computer they are just two completely seperate characters. 'Case folding' is simply because of the straight, linear, one-to-one relationship between upper case and lower case letters, there is no such releationship between accented and unaccented characters, their relationship is purely human symbolic and possibly one-to-many (e with no accent, e with the upward accent, e with the downward accent, etc..). If you want partial searching, you will consume more memory (your index vocabulary will grow larger). ZCatalog is optimized all over the place for memory consuption, but you will see significant memory usage, that's just the way indexers work if you want them to be fast. If you want to keep memory usage down, avoid mass indexing. Do not use the 'Find objects to Catalog' tab on the ZCatalog, create your own types of objects that incrimentally index themselves when they are created/edited/deleted. Mass indexing balloons memory because the entire index is, pretty much, loaded in memory all at once. The ZCatalog also uses subtransactions, which means that it can index document corpuses much larger than available memory. Of course, as parts of the index get deactivated to the database and reactivated from the database, indexing gets much slower. Any indexing program that is indexing a half-million documents will need to use hundreds of megs of *something* to build and store all of those references. ZCatalog is nice in that it will use virtual memory if possibly, and database storage if necessary. It's true that htdig is 'optimized' for this but it's also true that htdig is not a constantly running process like Zope is. Between queries, htdig keeps all of its index data and meta-data on disk. Obviously, it is not consuming any memory at these times. Of course, you also suffer quite a performance penalty with htdig every time you use it, because a process must be spawned, data must be read from the disk and loaded into memory, etc. Zope does not suffer this performance penalty because it is a long running process. -Michel

I've actually redesigned my product to have nested ZClasses (which I am finding out now are impossible to add when inherited). I have a structure like this: MyProduct ZClass1 MyBaseClass InsideBase InheritedFromInsideBase (I'm trying to create a ZClass2 instance inside here) ZClass2 I can create ZClass1 instance anywhere I want because they are at the top level of my product. But anytime I call the add form for ZClass2 inside my inherited class it creates the instance inside MyBaseClass rather than inside InheritedFromInsideBase. This is probably making no sense. users other than superuser cannot add class instances of my product

Hello, i have the following problem: I created a ZClass within a Product, strictly following the "Zope Developer's Guide (ZDG)". The Product is as simple as the CDProduct mentioned in the ZDG. The Product works for me, the superuser. I can add Instances, manage properties, delete instances and so on. The Product is called "LinkProduct", the ZClass "LinkClass", meta_type "Link". Next i created new folder, a new user account in it, defined a role and added the user to the role. I gave the permisson to "Add Documents, Images, and Files" and the user (role) is able to add these. Now the problem: I gave the Permission "Add Links" to the user (role) and the user can chosse my Class from the "Available Objects" Selection. If he clicks "Add", the Browser ask for a password and the error follwing exception occurs: Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. Unauthorized You are not authorized to access this resource. Username and password are not correct.
