Max Length for 'text' property???

Ouch! Just got bit by this thing ... created quite a few zclasses etc all looking good however I only subclassed Catalogaware and Renderable and not DtmlDocument because of sub cataloging problems I was having. Is this the problem - not having a suitable subclass to contain longer text entry? I have a text property called body that I was trying to use to contain any text content for tha instance ... I have a site to present tomorrow and am stumped - anybody have any ideas? Have I gone about this rather rashly?? I /need/ catalog aware and so don't want to use dtml document. I like to comment my code and I find myself wanting something a little more flexible than the <dtml-comment></dtml-comment> convention. What I think would be nice would be a way to embed a comment into any dtml tag. Here is my suggestion: <dtml-var some_money_variable fmt='dollars-and-cents' // everything from the double slash to the ending greater than bracket is a comment> I program a lot of javascript and am acustomed the // for comments, but any kind of simple trigger is fine by me. Trying to understand __roles__

In previous e-mails I've described a problem that I've been having with my management tabs. I have a subclass of Folder which is displaying the Contents tab even though the currently authenticated user shouldn't have access to it. If my folder defines it's own "manage_main" instead of inheriting it from ObjectManager, the Contents tab is not visible to users who shouldn't see it. After spending some time with the debugger, I found the following bit of information: If I inherit manage_main from ObjectManager, when the object representing manage_main is asked for its '__roles__', it answers a list of ['Manager', 'Publisher', 'Manager']. I don't exactly understand where this information comes from, and, more importantly, why it contains my 'Publisher' role. If I define manage_main in my Folder subclass, however, asking manage_main for its '__roles__' answers ['Manager']. This seems like the correct answer to me. I have the feeling that there is some key concept about Zope and/or Python that I'm not getting. Why does the inherited manage_main have different __roles__ than if I define it in my subclass? How would it have managed to pick up a role (Publisher) that hasn't been assigned to it (to the best of my knowledge)? Finally, can someone tell me where I can see how __roles__ is implemented? Help with etcUser Folder

Hi, I'm running RedHat 6.1 with neither shadow, nor MD5 passwords, and I can't get the etcUserFolder product to work. I try creating an etcUser folder, I specify the /etc/passwd file and then it creates successfully, but no users are shown, and after specifying security levels on some other object to test it, the authentication doesn't work. It just keeps popping up the password dialog until 3 tries, and then gives an authentication error. Normal User Folders work fine. The Readme says that the cryptmodule.so might not work so I replaced it with the cryptmodule.so from my Python installation. Still no-go. Any suggestions on what I should try next? Thanks, joe

Zope Python Inheritance Question

In looking at the implementation of Folder, I see that it includes Collection as one of its base classes. Folder also includes ObjectManager as one of its base classes. ObjectManager itself includes Collection as a base class. Is it redundant to have Folder derive from the Collection class? Just trying to figure this stuff out... Thanks. James W. Tiny Table is great for data which is rarely changed and can be updated appropriately through the Tiny Tables Management interface screen. If you look at the instructions the author pretty well states that the intent was no to solve the interactive storage projects that one might have. You have two primary choices for what you are trying to accomplish. If you have huge quantities of data or wish to connect your data to sources outside of Zope, then you will need to store your data in an external database. If you are wanting to keep all of your data internal to Zope, then the best thing that I can think of would be to create a ZClass which contains all of the information that you wish to keep within its property sheet. If you make the ZClass catalog aware, then you can search on any of its contents through ZCatalog and have a ready made interface for editing the data of each 'record item' without the need for any fancy coding. There are numerous examples of doing this within the Zope mail archives. I went down this path and it took me the better part of a week working on it part time to build my first product ... now that I understand how Zope works, creating products is almost a trivial matter. >From the questions that you have been posting, I don't think that you have an understanding of what Zope really is. This had us scratching our heads for a while some time back... Are you starting up zope in debug mode from the console, and then logging out? If this is the case, then the console handle has disappeared and the logger can't write to it. Odd Security Behavior

I'm working on a Python-based extension to the Folder class. I'm planning on adding a couple of custom roles, a couple of custom views and some special behavior. I'm sure that most of this I could do with a ZClass, but I'm trying to learn some Python so I figured I would build this extension using only Python. I've basically got the thing sort of working, but I'm seeing some odd behavior that I don't fully understand. My object is a subclass of Folder. I have defined a manage_options which contains a list of all my views. I have defined an __ac_permissions__ which adds a new permission which controls access to one of the views. I have defined an __ac_roles__ to add a new role. I can create a new instance and the information on my security tab looks as I would expect. I have verified that the object I create is in fact an instance of my Python class. Now comes the strange part. I want my management role and my new role (called Publisher) to be able to access the management interface, so I've checked the 'View management screens' options. However, I don't want the manager role to view my "Publisher" view (one of the views defined by my class), and I don't want my "Publisher" role to see full contents. I have unchecked the "Access Publication Contents" (my Publisher view role) for everyone except the Publisher role. I have "Access contents information" checked for my Manager but not for the Publisher role. What I hoped would happen is that when I was authenticated as Manager, I would see all tabs except the "Publisher" tab and when I was authenticated as Publisher, I would see all tabs except the contents tab. What happened was both users were able to see all tabs. I haven't figured out why this is happening. In an effort to customize my "contents" view, I copied the "main.dtml" from OFS (the dtml used by ObjectManager to display contents) to my product directory. I added the following line to my Python class to get my main.dtml used: manage_main=HTMLFile('main', globals()) I made a tiny change in the dtml so I could verify that my dtml was being displayed. I restarted the browser and server and connected as Manager. I saw my modified contents screen, as expected. However, when I logged in as Publisher, I didn't see the Contents tab at all. The first page displayed was my Publisher view (which is what I really wanted to have happen) and the Contents tab didn't exist. My question is this, why is it that when I use the inheritied manage_main (from ObjectManager), permissions don't work as I expect, but when my class overrides manage_main, but uses basically the same dtml template for contents, the contents are shown for Managers but not my Publisher role? Moving a CatalogAware Instance

Hi, I have problems with the Catalog of a CatalogAware ZClass Instance. The content of the catalog just does not update, even changing content does not correct this. If I click on Update in the Cataloged Objects, all Objects are removed from the Catalog and I do not see a way to get them in again without reentry. I cannot rename the cataloged objects, because of the Error: Error Type: ValueError Error Value: Uncatalog of absent id 'Album/Anna/Taufe/Anna2' wich refers to the old catalog location. Is there a way to get the catalog reindexed correctly after moving or renaming it? Thanks Jochen
