dynamic update of MSWord-Documents from local FileSystem

Dear List, and in the same way to my first question about xml-documtents is it possible to link msword-documents residing in the local filesystem to zope via the MSWord-Document Product, the Word-Munger Product or by any other means dynamically. So that changes in the external word-document are reflected in zope on the fly and I could reference to the content by dtml-var? If somebody knows about that or has done it, I would be very thankful for some hints how to do it? Elena

Permission Problem

Hello, I wrote a small product to automatically wrap some pages with configurable templates. Now I have a little problem with defining permissions. I defined the role "mitarbeiter" in the management screens, and gave this role all permissions it needs (especially the permission for the management functions of the product). Now, I have a user "test". When assigned to the "Manager" built-in role, it can manage the objects of this product. When assigned to the "mitarbeiter" role, this account cannot manage the objects (it can view the management screens, but whenever calling a method that actually changes something, the login window pops up and asks for username and password. My product class contains the following lines: manage_options = ( {"label": "Contents", "action": "manage_contentForm"}, {"label": "Properties", "action": "manage_editForm"}, {"label": "view", "action": "index_html"}, ) + SimpleItem.SimpleItem.manage_options __ac_permissions__=( ("View management screens", ("manage_editForm", "manage_tabs", "manage_contentForm")), ("Change permissions", ("manage_access",)), ("Manage ZAWiW Pages", ("manage_changePri", "manage_addPart", "manage_changePart", "manage_delPart", "manage_changeTitle", "manage_delTitle", "manage_addLanguage", "manage_delLanguage", "", "index_html", "__call__")), ("View", ('', 'index_html','__call__'))) As I said, the permission to "Manage ZAWiW Pages" is assigned to the mitarbeiter role, as well as all other permissions of this class, and some others (adding Images etc.) If this doesn't clear my problem, I could try to strip it down to a minimal example and post the whole thing then. Security/Design Help

Hello, I am working on a voting system for my schools' computer science classes. Students in each class will vote for the student of the week. The student heirarchy is represented in the Zope filesystem by folders: at the top is the class folder, then period folders and finally student folders. Each student folder contains an acl_users with that students login information. An important feature in this voting program is to authenticate students when they vote, so that they are not able to vote in classes/periods they are not in. My current problem is figuring out where in the aquisition path the voting scripts should go, so that when a user goes to the voting form it prompts him/her to login and builds a list of students based on the class this student belongs to. So far I can build the list of students by using aquisition, but I am having trouble with authentication. Here is the voting form i can generate by looping through the folders in the advanced topics class (which only has one period, so it is not sectioned into periods): http://linus.yorktown.arlington.k12.va.us/Adv/vote_form I hope my explination made some sense ;) What I would like to know is how some of you would approach this problem? What you are looking for, essentially, is a portion of a document management system. Yes, there are people on the Zope list that want to do what you described (i.e., updating Zope with the updated file information). I think you should look at the External File/ External Image Product (ExtFile/ExtImage, which you can find by looking for ExtFile-1.1.3.tgz on the Zope site). That product will allow you to keep only the meta data on Zope, while the file itself resides on the file system. The next step would be to have Zope update the data automatically. For that, you need a trigger or something like a cron job (in the *nix world). There has been some debate and knashing of teeth on this subject and I'm not sure that there has been a satisfactory answer. There are, however, a set of products called compress_datafs.fcm, backup_zope.fcm, Xron-0-0-9.tgz and pack-db_fs that use cron to backup Zope or otherwise run cron. You might look at that to see how they do it (but your site must be secure enough to run a cron job). Then you would simply schedule a cron job to scan the external file system and update the meta data for the various objects. For a full blown document management syste, the next step (something that I'm working on) is to have the user's save/retrieve files from the file system and use Zope to retain the version/checkout status. Those are the key functions of a document management system. It would also require some type of macro for the word processors. A way to do that might be to add an ftp client on the word processor and have a dialog box prompt the user for the information which would then be sent to Zope. Hi Ben! If I understand you right, you want to keep the assigned value of a variable, to use it again later on in your code. I guess the second call to x should have been a simple <? echo x ?>, or you'll (probably) get two different values(typo?). When you say that DTML *does* forget, how did you actually assign the value? In DTML itself, you cannot assign values to variables to be used throughout the entire code. Of course there _are_ ways to accomplish what you want to do, and usually one of these two options is being considered: 1) Using the <dtml-let> tag. This pushes a new variable on the namespace stack holding the value you assigned in the tag: ----------------------------------------- <dtml-let x="6*7"> The meaning of life is...<dtml-var x><br /> In case you forgot: <dtml-var x><br /> </dtml-let> If there are no other x's in the namespace, this will generate an error: <dtml-var x> ----------------------------------------- dtml-let is a doublet tag, and the assignment is only valid within the tag. Therefore the above code will (probably) give you an attribute error on the last line. ("Probably" because x will be looked up through acquisition, and there might be an object with this name) 2) Setting a REQUEST variable. The REQUEST object is a container for a couple of useful things you have received from the client request, and also holds some other useful information about the environment of the current request (auto-generated variables). If you want to have a look, a dtml method holding <dtml-var REQUEST> might be quite an enlightening thing to have around the house (call it and you'll see what will be available to you). >From DTML, you can read, and you can also _write_ "variables" in this object. If you have a form with <input type="text" name="some_text">, then the DTML method (e.g.) that you send this form to can have a look at what you have typed: <dtml-var "REQUEST['some_text']"> or <dtml-var "REQUEST.form['some_text']"> So if you want to have a variable available "happily ever after", use: <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('x', 6*7)"> to set it. Now your variable x is available through the REQUEST object, and _anywhere_ beneath this assignment (or in another dtml method you are calling inside that code) you can use <dtml-var "REQUEST[x]"> or just <dtml-var x>. (the REQUEST[x] version, though longer, is the more precise way of looking it up. This will even work inside a <dtml-let x="something_else"> tag.) I believe you should have a look (at least) at the first chapters of the Zope Book (http://www.zope.org/Members/michel/ZB) especially if you find this a too complicated way of preserving variable values. "Good" programming style ("the Zope way programming style") might make this demand obsolete in DTML. If you need to juggle around with variables and actually doing something to them a couple of times, you're better off with a Python Script. (same book!) :-) If you need to set a lot of REQUEST variables, or have the well-known "checkbox problem" with html forms (if not checked nothing is sent, therefore the boolean value of the checkbox is not available), you might also want to have a look at a product, the <dtml-set> tag: http://www.zope.org/Members/ivo/SetTag hth, Danny On Wednesday 31 October 2001 08:36, you wrote: > ...but apparently it's not. Platform statistics

Hello folks; I was wondering if there were any sort of statistics available to give an idea of how many installations of Zope there are running on various platforms? My main interest in these facts are my ongoing attempts to run our corporate Intranet on Zope behind MS IIS. Though we've been prototyping Zope in a stand-alone mode for about 6 months our recent attempt to let it play via IIS & PCGI has been less than spectacular. The administrator's main contention is that it is open source, unsupported and my attempt to lock them into a unix-centric platform; something that will work fine under "unix" but Windows is an after-thought. (On could take this basically as a predetermined approach to Zope/open source by said admin). What I'd like to find are some stats to do with companies using IIS and Zope; showing that such a setup isn't a black-sheep. I know that there are lists of sites that run Zope available, but often they don't show conclusively what their setup is, depending if Zope is squirreled away behind a web-server, or it is on an intranet, etc. Anybody know of the existence of such info?
