I'm having problems trying to figure out how to keep the production version of my app synchronized with the developement version. I need to be able to work on an app on my laptop, then move those changes onto my production versions of the application spread around several sites. Since when in use, the production app's data changes quite a bit, it's not as easy as just copying over the whole site, I'd overwrite a lot of data. It'd be nice to have an option on export/import to do something analagous to applying a diff to a file. It'd also then be easy to apply to several different sites running the same app. Any help would be appreciated. Gary.

hrm, wait, my last suggestion won't work, you can't just export /, and it'd carry all the data below it anyway. How do you put all of your logic away in a folder, off of say /, and have your data also in a folder off of /? i.e. how would accessing /datafolder/method, know that method was in /methodfolder/method ? I would recommend Hurrah (http://www.hurrah.com/) who host one of my Zope websites.They charge me $25/month and host my Zope site. I believe the package includes unlimited email accounts but you'll want to double-check that. They are the most cost-effective host I've found. Also, you fully control your own installation so you can put whatever products or customization in that you want. When I signed up, 2.2.x was current so that was what was installed for me at the time. Good idea, I'm afraid I may have to do that. I could move all of my methods/SQLmethods, etc into my /, and they'd be available by acquisition (they're not used for anything else, so I'm not worried about polluting my /). As it is, my logic is all in the same folder as the base of my data, which isn't optimal I guess. Gary. I'm about to start building Zope w/PostreSQL search and edit forms. As I do much better working by example, I'm wondering if there are examples (I'm happy to just go to the site and reveal codes to figure out what I need to do) or instructions that I should look at before I begin (other than the Z SQL Methods User's Guide). -Don

Zope hosting services?

I am currently hosting a domain consisting of a small handful of email accounts at a non-Zope provider. I'd like to move my email accounts to a Zope provider and have Zope and my email all on one provider (with Postgresql available also). I'm after a provider with the current version of Zope available for me to learn with and begin to make applications. I don't want to learn on the 2.2.x line because I understand things have changed in 2.3.x. I'd like a provider with full remote admin capabilities for email accounts, web content, etc.. I'll be adding email accounts over time and want short turn around times on this. I also want to be able to deploy my own web apps there and make them there as well. Does anyone have any suggestions for low-cost providers to meet these requirements? I'm at $16.00/month right now and while I'm a small-time player, this is the budget I want to stay close to. Python, per se, does not support persistence. To get persistence, Zope objects inherit from class "Persistence". This class tries to detect changes to an object, as, when the object is changed, the modified state must be made persistent. The class detects when you directly change an attribute of the object. Thus: o.attr= xxx is detected. However, if an attribute value is mutable, you can change the attribute value without changing the object: o.attr.append('xxxx') would append 'xxxx' to "o.attr" (assumed, this is a list) without any change to "o". The persistence machinery would not detect, that "o" has been changed and a new value must be made persistent. The change would probably got lost eventually. There are two options: 1. avoid such modifications (treating mutable attributes as immutable) in the example above, you could use alternatively: o.attr= o.attr + ['xxxx'] You recognize the explicit assignment? 2. tell the persistence machinery about the change. You do this by setting an attribute to a true value. I think, it is "_p_changed" but it might have a slightly different name. I think, 2. is the far superior option. Dieter

2.3.0 Solaris build corrupted?

Then, I managed to start (tar xvif ignores checksums) it but there isn't at least the HTTPCacheManager product. I've got exactly the same error with 2.3.1b1 solaris tgz. Well, I can't see where the problem is. Maybe somebody else can. At this point, I would start tracing. You might want to start by uncommenting the line #import pdb; pdb.set_trace() # debug in the trigger method of Xron DTMLMethod.py. Then you can examine your namespace, and maybe figure out what's missing. DTML and Lists

Hello, I'd pretty much a newbie at Zope and running into some problems. I have to make a <dtml-tree> with it's branches being fetched from a database, that's already done but I also need to carry a variable with the whole hierarchy to the last leaf of the tree. Something like (time for nasty ascii art): +- Software 0 | +- Operational System 0.1 | +- Linux 0.1.1 | +- FreeBSD 0.1.2 +- Hardware 3 Those numbers are indexes on the database, when someone clicks on "Linux" I want to query the database for items that are related to Software/OS/Linux. I understand that I could use Zope's own file system facilities but I'm afraid if this solution is scaleable to, maybe, thousands of categories(folders). Reading <dtml-tree>'s docs I've found a list that carries what I want, "tree-state", but I have no idea on how to access list's members on DTML. I've tried <dtml-var tree-state[0]> with no success. Any suggestions or solutions? Thanks in advance Leo
