Honestly I started to use (and learn) Zope for a big project without any Python knowledge, and made use of existing Products, new ZClass (not python) and DTML. This allowed me to show really *quickly* a good functionnal product (actually this is still in use), quite *simply* (for me), and now that i've convinced people about how great Zope is and what can be done, i'm able to request evolutions (and some reingineering) and a more "professional" developement process using Python where it *should* be. This is the great thing about Zope : You can do lot of efficient work with tools fitting your knowledge, and move smoothly to the next expertise level (or request some people to move for you). I (and other people as well ;-)) don't consider my myself as a good developper, but more as a end user with a good knowledge, and i still can use a big part of Zope Zen. IMHO this aspect is quite essential to let the maximun different people go with Zope. No need to understand ZPattern (i just can't ;- ) to make smart products. Didier.

Namespace problems

I have python method that is passed a list of country abbreviations. I want to be able to loop through this list and send each item to a ZSQL, but for some reason I keep getting Name and Key Errors. Zope Good/Bad News Article

Hey Paul, Just read your article (http://www.pault.com/zope.html) and really enjoyed it (besides comparing Java to Macs... yikes!). I agree that DC needs to really work with Zope Product Developers and help them as much as possible. I build and maintain a product and there are times when working with a new release or debugging something new in Zope that I would love to have a full fledged contact at Zope. You are correct that the first thing that people ask about Zope is "What products are there for it?" and the answer is "A lot" but not all of them well supported, useful or documented. DC should encourage and then force developers to be a bit better about documentation. I have seen product developers put up a new product with the full amount of documentation about it being "here it is... have fun." This certainly does not help all of those people who want to install and use Zope products. DC can encourage better product development and documentation by doing simple things such as T-shirt contest for best product documentation, tip, how-to and all the rest. Maybe a monthly thing that gets and keeps everyone involved. Did you see how much time people spent over at ZopeZen.org just to get that T-shirt. A sense of fun and excitement can go a long way. I also like the idea of a Zope Product Zone that links from the home page. "Downloads" does not really get the point across to most people of the depth of stuff there. Basic stuff such as how to analyze the stats and how to find a good Zope hosting provider would also go a long way. Anyway.. I wanted to thank you for you thoughts and ideas. I have CC'd the Zope mailing list (where all the developers really live) so as to share the response and encourage more. Thanks, J

Preventing WebDAV locks?

I have some pages configured to return Excel format to the user using the technique detailed at: http://twsite.bizland.com/twzop0014.htm When executed from Netscape everything works fine, when executed from IE 5.5, if the user opens the file directly into Excel via embedded OLE (clicks open or has the XLS associated), the client is locking the file on the server, preventing other users from accessing the data. Another client attempting to access the same file will not receive a response until the first user times out (3 minutes). Zope is unresponsive until the lock is released. Is it possible to prevent these client locks from the server? or to force read-only in Excel? The user is anonymous. If you access any object via acquisition or the DTML namespace, then the definition of a new property can break code: the property may be retrieved rather than an object formerly acquired, looked up deeper in the namespace.
