[Ann] Protecting DTML objects from Web-Access

Dear Zopistas, Several times, I heard the wish to protect objects from access through the Web while they are otherwise (i.e. from DTML, Python Script, ...) usable as normal. This requirement prevents using the "View" permission as it covers both access from the Web and internally. We discussed earlier to split the View permission into something like a "View" (in the sense of "View through the Web") and "Use" (in the sense as use internally). Recently, I suggested an incredible complex solution for hiding doc strings. Now, I found a really easy way to achieve the goal. It is a hack, though. Splitting the "View" permission would be much more explicit. It goes like this: ZPublisher normally wants to call "index_html" (or whatever standard method handles the HTTP request) when it reaches the end of the URL during traversal. It can be prevented to do this, if either the object does not have (or acquire) the method or is has, but it is 'None'. As DTML objects, and probably many others (Python Scripts may use a different approach), do not want an acquired "index_html" to be called, they define "index_html = None". If a DTML object's "index_html" is set to something different (not 'None'), then this object is called by ZPublisher and not the DTML object. You can set any callable object. It may return a nice page telling the user that he exceeds his limits, raise an exception or set an error response status. Setting "index_html" to "None" again restores the old state. Performing subrequests from DTML

Hi all, is there a DTML way to perform a subrequest? Details: I fetch a set of search results from a ZCatalog. All are of a known ZClass. To display the list of results, I have defined a method show_shortlist within the ZClass, the output of which I want to display. So, I would need to issue something like <dtml-in my_results> <dtml-subrequest expr="absolute_url + '/show_shortlist'"> </dtml-in> Is there something like that, or will I need to move the show_shortlist method to the root folder? What things _really_ mean

Hello everyone, I've been going through the "How to: Build a Searchable Job Board", and being the newbie that I am, I've been having trouble. First, it's a great recipe. I can make many a cake with it. The same kind of cake, the same kind of yellow cake. The same kind of yellow cake with white frosting... Second, (and this is where the subject line comes from) it occurs to me that the "objects" are really just web-pages. "Methods" are pieces of web-pages, though methods also seem to be a way to do something with the stuff you put into forms. "Properties" are forms. A "property sheet" is a collection of forms... Third, in light of the fact that the HOWTO says it is for those new to programming, I have proceeded to make changes to this HOWTO mainly to make it easier for me to deal with the various concepts and process, and to make it more generalized, so that it isn't simply a recipe, but something you can look at without the content and get a better idea of the concept behind it (a lot like Zope!). Along with this I have used some content from one or two different sources and integrated it into the HOWTO. Naturally, the changes I've made are private, but perhaps when I'm done doing everything I hope it could be published (with appropriate attributions and permission from the original author), in the hope that it my changes will be more helpful to the next newbie that reads and follows this HOWTO... It doesn't really matter who hosts it. Almost any company will want your business and will install Zope for you. As long as any hosting service is comfortable with pornography, all of them are going to levy a mounting charge for the Zope installation. It requires no special hardware, so you're still only renting drive space and bandwidth.... The real question is 'Does anyone know a provider that isn't already totally sick of hosting porno?' Which I don't think anyone on this list can or is willing to answer. But wait and see if I am the only responder. I'm not at all religious, but do you really think this is an appropriate question for Easter weekend? Um, not really. Objects refer to images, pages yes... but also other bits like mp3s or text files... anything you may want to differentiate from another 'object'... In a job-board, an object would also be a web page of someone's CV.. or an image, or video or audio clip of that same CV. A property is the html syntax that goes with the object. Beyond that HTML syntax you can adopt your own... Take the same analogy of job board. The CV of Paul Zwarts (that's me) is in 4 formats. HTML, Video, Audio and Word document. All have to have a property called Name. (Either that or they reside in a folder that is my name, but you see what it does). Methods, are in fact calls to data. You want to organize your data, but not just simply dump it on people point-blank. A method is a logic tidbit that sorts and operands data invisibly to the user. It may be using SQL, or Python methods, or other methods straight to other scripting languages. The beauty of Zope is that is only the flour and egg that binds it together. The frosting and spices are what make the cake its own kind as opposed to another kind of cake. Your bit about frosting on the cake is exactly what DTML is for. Its the presentation layer. If your objects are organized properly, then the presentation layer will determine the frosting color. As HTML was a presentation layer for a flat file structure, DTML is the very same for dynamic content that may come from different places at once, or one place that is always changing..... I'm a newbie myself, but I've had experience in SGML and other publishing methods (even those that predate computers) so I kind of understand the naming methods they use. I would suggest you check the Zope book as it explains more detailed (in one place) the methodology and naming conventions used by the Zopistas....
