small zope <-> apache improvement/suggestion

Hey! I just spent a "bit of a long time" trying to get apache to pass through the HTTP_Auth Headers to the zope pcgi-wrapper. (obviously I was doing something wrong ;) ) well to make a long story short: the suggested apache conf setup for using zope with pcgi and w/o fastcgi in the file doc/WEBSERVER.txt (line 300) is at the moment: # Zope configuration maps /Zope/ to the Zope.cgi CGI script RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP:Authorization} ^(.*) RewriteRule ^/Zope(.*) /usr/local/apache/cgi-bin/Zope.cgi/$1 [e=HTTP_CGI_A UTHORIZATION:%1,t=application/x-httpd-cgi,l] as also mentioned in the file, that is one long (and a bit ugly) rewriterule. Disadvantages of this approach: 1. only applies when header contains an "Auth-Tag" (surprise!) 2. creates small havock and some confusion with the already defined ScriptAlias line, in that one doesn't definitely know if only the ScriptAlias or also the RewriteRule are being applied 3. it's a really long line alternative suggestion: * drop the ScriptAlias line * drop the unnecessary RewriteCond-query * always apply the RewriteRule * split the RewriteRule into 3 lines :) the result then: RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ /var/www-edit/cgi-bin/zope.dpunkt.de/zope/$1 RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1 [e=HTTP_CGI_AUTHORIZATION:%{HTTP:Authorization}] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1 [t=application/x-httpd-cgi,l] a bit nicer to read, and (thank God) it works :) best wishes + great software! tom __________________________________________________ save the whales, feed the hungry, free the mallocs

My experience with the Python development process is very good. New versions contain few problems which are rapidly eliminated. I will switch to Python 2.1 (now using Zope with Python 2.0) immediately when it becomes available (has nice features, I fought for since a long time (nested namespaces)). You will only be affected for Zope 2.4. I think, it will take several month, before it is final. Dieter

Zope support through the community: sorting

Zopistas, there is currently a heaty and controversial debate at http://dev.zope.org/Wikis/DevSite/Proposals/ExtendedDTMLSorting It is concerned with Oleg's great "Sorting Patch" that provides (almost) general, easy to use sorting facilities all over Zope's framework (DTML, Python Scripts, External Methods, ZPT, ....). There seems to be danger that this great support through a community member will have a fate similar to Tino's "in" patch: that the incorporation into the Zope core is far too long delayed because important DC people fear "feature bloat". If you are interested in sorting along the lines * case sensitive/insensitive * ascending/descending * locale aware * multi-column you should go to the above site and voice your opinion. As a general note: It seems to me that DC is far too reluctant to accept contributions to Zope from community members: * patches fixing bugs * patches implementing missing but useful features In my view * bug fixing patches should always be accepted unless the patch is not easily understandable. * feature patches should be accepted, if it makes Zope more consistent (as the upcoming "urlparam_expr" patch) or easier to use (as Oleg's sorting patch or Tino's in patch). Great reluctance towards these contributions risks Zope to lose community support. I can tell from experience the frustration caused by DC ignoring contributions. I invested considerable time to file several important ZCatalog bug reports with patches into the collector for Zope 2.1.6, just to see them ignored in all versions of Zope 2.2. Only for Zope 2.3.1, the issues have been addressed. I still advice people to file bug reports and patches into the Collector, but personnaly I already start to think whether it is worth the effort.... Dieter

Hi, I am mentally blocked now in getting something simple (I assume) to work. I want to check if all required fields in a form are filled - simply the presence of data is to be checked for now. My form processing is included in a <dtml-let> statement that defines the form variables and the descriptive names. Also the required fields are defined here. I want to check the required fields within a <dtml-in> statement. There I cannot access the fieldnames directly because my test would never fail: <dtml-let fields="{'m_email':'Email-Adresse', 'm_vorname':'Vorname', ... 'm_plz':'Postleitzahl' }" required="['m_email','m_vorname','m_nachname']" > <dtml-if expr="REQUEST.REQUEST_METHOD=='POST'"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('finished','true')"> <dtml-in required> Checking: <dtml-var sequence-item><br> <dtml-unless ????????????????> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('finished','false')"> Missing: <dtml-var sequence-item><br> </dtml-unless> </dtml-in> <dtml-if "REQUEST.get('finished')=='true'"> ... </dtml-let> What has to be used in <dtml-unless>? Is there a better/simpler way to check the presence of required data? Zope + sql

I hope someone has an example or suggestion. Using Znolk, I SELECT from a table and the list is viewed. However, I would like to choose certain records (mark them from the viewed list) and then change a variable of only the marked records to a single new value. The new and old variable values are finite, they could come from a pull down list. So the idea would be to show the list from SELECT, but have an pull-down menu of new values at the top of the page that should be replaced for the variable to edit. The user would choose the new value from the pull-down and then go down the page and mark each record for which that value would be UPDATEed in the table Once this is done the values would be passed back to sql and UPDATE used to replace the old values. I'm not quite sure how to do this either. Do you have a loop, where inside the loop the UPDATE is goes through each marked record, or do you loop inside the UPDATE tablename set variable=newvalue where ----loop here with or's------ Any suggestions or similar examples would be appreciated.

Help with DTML-var tag and Passing Variables

This works great as a link in a dtml method. I pass the variable "name" from the page in which this link is on and I get the user's address just fine <a href="<dtml-var q_address url>?Names.First_Name=<dtml-var name>">Get User's Address</a> What I really want to do is not have a link and just call all the data on one page eliminating the need for hyperlink. I would have thought this would work: <dtml-var "q_address(Names.First_Name=<dtml-var name)> It does not. Just shows up as txt on the page. If someone can help out I would appreciate it. I have searched the archives extensively and tried the various methods. Rob
