So I've been reading the source of LoginManager 0.8.8 for a while now and I'd love for someone to explain why what I'm about to say is crazy: There's some silliness going on in there with respect to handling presentation of the login form. Specifically: (1) findLogin of the BasicCookieLogin has an if which seems to be trying to use the loginForm DTML Document form values in the case that there is no cookie information about the user. Thus it seems the author intended for the loginForm to come up in response to any "unauthorized" access. The submission of that form would then "authorize" the user the second time around. I don't see how this would ever happen, though (see 2) (2) loginManager.py's lm_unath() functions, which replace response.unauthorized() when no user can be identified (such as in 1, when first accessing any page) both "append" the old() unauthorized() function to the loginForm DTML Document which they invoke. This old() seems to be the unauthorized() implementation found in HTMLResponse of Zope. What it does is to eventually raise an unauthorized exception, and this results in sending back a 401 w/ the WWW-Authenticate header that causes the panel to pop up for login. This prevents the loginForm DTML form from ever displaying. So what were the authors thinking here? Am I supposed to put a <dtml-try> in the standard document header and handle the unauthorized exception in some standard way in the footer? Just doesn't seem to make sense unless LoginManager was meant to be a top level user_folder and all this is left over or half-finished cruft. A. PS: This stuff needs to get an order of magnitude less painful to deal with, no?

Generic Sort External Method

Hello! On http://www.zope.org/Members/phd/Sort/ there is the generic Sort External Method that helps programmers to sort their sequences according to their needs. It can sort by a key, by multiple key, in ascending/descending order (different order for any key possible), by locale rules, ignoring case and, best of all, it allows developer to write his/her own comparison function for a key. Example: Sort(sequence, "akey/nocase,anotherkey/cmp/desc") This, of course, is a variant of my patch for dtml-in (http://classic.zope.org:8080/Collector/2120/view) I am not going to drop one of them in favor of the other - both have its niches. Acquisition problem?

I'm trying to use LoginManager and am running into a little problem, which I'm sure is based in a not-deep-enough understanding of acquisition issues. Bloop ---acl_users ------Z MySQL DA ------SQL_get_password [SQL Method, taking username & password parameters, tested & works] ------xuserAuthenticate [DTML Method: contains the line <dtml-in "SQL_get_password(username='foo',password='bar')">] ------Test [DTML Method: contains the line <dtml-let ret="xuserAuthenticate(username='foo',password='bar')"> If I try to "view" Test, then I get the nasty traceback below. If I view xuserAuthenticate, no such error is reported. I suppose this is because dtml-let puts a "strange" acquisition context in place during the execution of xuserAuthenticate...an execution context that does not include the containing folder of Test (namely acl_users). Or is this due to some strange properties that I am not yet familiar with of acl_user folders? hi all zopists, i have seen how zope works on linux when one of my friend happened to install.. and it didn't take me any time to get a comfy feeling with it. now i am trying on win nt platform.. and face some problems.. the initial installation or the start.bat doesn't get executed properly stating errors like "could not lock the database file. there must be another process that has opened the file." when there's no process which is using it. looking forward for some urgent assistance on the same. thanks and regards, madhavi.

Classes & Objects Vs Relational Databases

hello, i'd like to know whether it is best to use classes or relational databases for a (medium ?) sized project involving about 1000 new documents a month (average interconnection between them) and about 2 years of backlogs (each doc being about 1500 signs). i would love to do it entirely in zope (classes + methods + dtml) but i'm not sure wheter this is a good idea or if i can make everything i'm used to like in a relational database. to make it more clear, i'll make an example. let's say i am dealing with news-like sutff i have the following tree : news news/sport news/sport/20010406_0236 news/sport/20010406_0345 news/sport/XXXXXXXXXXXXX (being yyyymmdd_hhmm) news/art news/art/20010406_0236 news/art/20010406_0345 news/art/XXXXXXXXXXXXX (being yyyymmdd_hhmm too) i'm using classe for these yyyymmdd_hhmm objects and i'd like to sort them according to date or author both in separate folders (newest items in sports) or to pick them from both (5 most recent items from both folders for example). how do i do that in dtml ? (i'd prefer doing it in dtml than in python because people who will be in charge afterwards will have less trouble managing it). <dtml-in xxx sort="date"> would do the trick inside a folder, but how do i do it in both folders ???? furthermore, is it a good idea to keep this in the zodb or is it best to put it in another outside database (mysql most probably) ? thx, $ven

Can someone help me out to fix this sybaseDA issue? I am trying to make a DB connection with Zope with SybaseDA-2.0b2-src.tgz. recursion in zope.

hi, recursion will be the bane of my existence. i have something like the following data structure: base_id node_num type par children in this, base id is a unique id, node num is unique for a user, par is the node num from which the instance of the node num derives, and children are the node nums that derive from the node num. the type is either a branch or a leaf. a branch can have either more branches or leaves, but not both. (in case it is not obvious, the data structure is building a tree-list). but i need to be able to traverse the tree outside of the tree-list structure to solve my problem. base_id type node_num par children 1010 B 2 1 [3, 5, 10, 25] 1011 B 3 2 [6, 7, 8, 9] 1912 L 5 2 [] 1913 L 6 3 [] 2011 L 7 3 [] 2012 L 8 3 [] 2244 L 9 3 [] 2250 B 10 2 [11, 12, 13] 2251 B 11 10 [] Rules and coding: A type of B means a branch, a type of L is a leaf. A node of a type B cannot contain both nodes of type B and type L, so a B type with the first element of a B cannot contain subsequent Leaves. And a B type with the first element of L cannot contain any other B types. i have written a method that iterates through a list of the children. if the first child points to a node that is a terminal child (L), it stops and prints out the identification of the child. it will also expand out a list of nodes containing terminal children [ good heavens this sounds grim! ] but when i try to get it to expand those sub-nodes of type B i get an error stating excessive recursion; yet, if i look (via view source) at the error screen, the source shows the expansion down to a single sub-branch, and no lower; and it never displays the error trace. a strangeness that has been popping up recently -- i.e., an error, whose source shows what i expected the method to do, but does not include an error trace. i would post the relevant code, but it is in two files and rather long. if anyone has had experience with recursion in zope and can lend some advice, or point out a how-to, i would very much appreciate it. many thanks for any pointers. ciao! greg.
