Zope & the Zoo - newbie problems...

On page 67 of 'the Zope book' (the user guide on the zope documentation site) it discusses some really basic setup's for this sample site they call the Zope Zoo. Pretty simple - create a project directory (zopezoo), set up three subfolders under it, and create a method (called navigation ) that iterates over the directories, listing them out - here's the method: <ul> <dtml-in expr="objectValues('Folder')"> <li><a href="&dtml-absolute_url;"><dtml-var title_or_id></a><br></li> </dtml-in> </ul> I entered this in, and view the method, and it works fine. But then, when viewing the standard_html_header that calls the method I get the standard error 'KeyError' Here's the text of the standard_html_header: <head><title><dtml-var title></title></head> <body> <dtml-var navigation> Anything strike you as wrong with this? I'm using the 2.3.1 version on windows (for now), and Mozilla. Has anyone heard of a test site that can be imported to check whether or not the install is working properly ? signed: rich

The events based programming model for Zope ?

Hi guys, i dont know if this is the right forum for raising this kind of ideas - forgive me if its not. I was thinking about an event based model for the application servers like zope which would make life easier for the programmers. Just like the db triggers, mouse events etc....it would be great if a web server would include triggers internally like - page closed, page opened, page validation, object start, object destroy, and so on.... just thinking if anyone else has done anything like this - is this even a valid model for the web model. I feel this would greatly simplify programming because if the programmers had to just trap the events and do the relevant coding for that then there could truly be a Rapid Web development Tools and Rapid prototyping etc which would also bring greater speed to the development cycle itself overall on the web. Any ideas ? What do you guys say ? Can Zope be extended this way by implementing a layer within zope that raises these triggers and letting the programmers trap these events ? Any plans ? Well just shooting off some ideas - pardon me if it sounds stupid. regards bobby

Zope logs

I'm trying to gleen the reason for a sudden disappearance of my Zope process, the first Zope crash I've encountered. I've not run Zope with any special options, haven't specified log files and not altered the debugging level, just the vanilla start script (zope 2.3.0). The only log info I could find was in zope/etc/Z2.log. It only contained connection-related entries, no errors. I also noticed some peculiar last entries. Here's one: 196.7.146.145: - - [24/May/2001:12:57:18 +0200] "GET /TrispenDB/version_control/Bugs/Interface/Manage/showBug?prID=423 HTTP/1.1" 200 5359 "http://oskar:8080/TrispenDB/version_control/Bugs/Interface/Browse" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.01; Windows NT; TUCOWS)" This request is not in accord with my zope directory structure. The request should have referred to TrispenDB/Bugs/Interface/Manage/show....blah...blah... since Bugs and version_control are on the same level. I suppose it is possible to fabricate scenarios under which this improper request could have ocurred...but why did Zope die just right after? How/where can I look for more information?

Hi David... very simple- in the directory where Dreamweaver is installed, under the "configuration" subdirectory, there's a file called "extensions.txt". Open this file in your favorite text editor and add "DTML" to the list of recognized extensions. if I remember correctly, there's actually a lot of good information to be gleaned by reading thru some of the text files in the Dreamweaver config. directory. have fun! Hello, I have the same thing. AFAIK the log file is updated when the request is completed, so if one request make your server die, you will probably have no trace in the log. The log file is also not flushed on every write. URLs in Z2.log

Zope's log file currently records the URL as sent by the http client in its http access log. In the case of an FTP request it logs an equivalent URL, synthesized by ZServer. I am beginning to believe that this is subtly wrong...... What it really needs to log is the URL of the published method. This makes a difference in only a few situations: 1. In a POST request, if the body contains a :method parameter. 2. In an xmlrpc request, which is also POST, where the message method name is contained in the method body, and possibly sub-object names to. Should ZServer be changed so that it logs a longer, more accurate, synthesized URL for these POST requests, much like it does for FTP? Toby Dickenson tdickenson(a)geminidataloggers.com

Bill, OK, everybody calm down. The 'client' as I mentioned is not a full blown, singing and dancing bear fighting sort of thing. It's purely a proof of concept. It connects, it sends messages, it receives messages, and the best bit is that it can send and receive binary files. All this is being done in a very haphazard, 'refresh the screen to see your new messages' sort of way. Just a small Python script. I'll do some tidy up this weekend and release the code to my Zope.org members area early next week. That said, I would love some collaboration on this project. I would love to spend more time on this, but my very young family has to come first. I'ts probably going to be quite slow work for me, so any help would be f'in marvellous. The Jabber Server I have running though is open and available to anyone that is interested in this sort of thing. It is on www.zope.co.uk:5222, it has the WCS extensions and the HTTP extensions built as well. It hasn't got a lot of the extra transports like ICQ, IRC, Conference etc.. But it works as a plain Jabber Server. I suppose I'd better describe the WCS and HTTP extensions. The WCS stuff allows connections through XML-RPC which considering that Jabber is a permanent connection based protocol, is no mean feat when it comes to maointaining presence. There are some docs available but the location of them eludes me at present. The HTTP stuff allows connection via a URL, which could mean creating a Javascript/DHTML based client, there are some examples which I'll get up somewhere as well. You can also connect of course in the traditional Jabber way, using the Python stuff on download.jabber.org. It would be interesting to see some Zope and Jabber integration work being done (apart from myself, of course), so feel free to use this server whenever you please. But remember this is a dev machine and it could disappear at any moment. As a kick start to other people, I've attached a very small script which shows how to connect via xml-rpc and how to send messages etc. This script is a bit flakey since the sessionid is cached on the server side for about three minutes, so if your having trouble it means that it can't connect because your sessionid is incorrect. You'll just have to wait, or rewrite the script so that it works correctly ;) The user and password in that script are real users, but they are test users, feel free to use that one in the short term, but it will probably disappear quite shortly so it is probably better that you create your own user. Anyway, let's get playing and have fun! data.fs packing

How do I pack the Data.fs while ZEO is running? I can't seem to pack it. It just *tries* to pack it but nothing happens. Even if I use top no process is made. I don't want to initiate a Browser compatibility flame war. But is it necessity to bother all zope.org visitors with that zopelogo.png ? Please have a look at your User Agent statistic. There are many users who are using Netscape 4.x.
