Refresh -- invaluable but do not trust it completely

Yesterday, I started development of a new Zope product. Shane's "refresh" helped me a lot to get rid of lots of initial errors. After few iterations, the traceback in the product folder disappeared. But the creation of a new instance failed with an unexplainable "Unauthorized". Restarting Zope solved the problem. Thus, "refresh" save me lots of time but at some times it may introduce problems that are not really there. Use it, but do not trust it completely. Dieter

All you have to do is tell it how to decide if someone's authenticated or not. A bit like PAM in Linux, if you know about that. With other types of UserFolder, you're stuck with SQL or LDAP or some other flavour of user storage you decided on a couple of months ago. If you want to change the type of user store, you have to tinker with the business logic too. With LoginManager, it's more or less just a case of plugging in a new data source. You can have more than one data source and have LoginManager authentivate against each of them in order. You can do even cleverer things but I'm not sure about that yet. 2) How This is the only way I've worked out how to use it. I know there's better ways of doing it because I've seen mails to thateffect from Ty. My way is the GUF-compatability way. - Add a LoginManager to your test folder that you created so you didn't mess any other folders up in your Zope by accident. Have it generate a GenericUserSource for you. - Click on its UserSources tab. This is where you can add UserSources, like your LDAP User Source and your Plain Text File User Source. - There's a UserSource in there already for you (a GenericUserSource, indeed) - Add 4 methods to it: userAuthenticate, userDomains, userExists, and userRoles. (see example below) - That's it! Watch your folder become inaccessible because you made a mistake in your authentication methods! - The methods tab of the LoginManager has some default forms. - If you want to log in a user from another page, create a form which posts fields called __ac_name and __ac_password to a method which doesn't have anonymous user access. (see the example loginForm for an example) Here's an external method which authenticates against a SQL database with a ZSQL method that's in the UserSource. Commented out is a cheesey hardcoded username and password example: def userAuthenticate(self,REQUEST,username,password): if self.SQL_authenticate_user(username=username,password=password): #if username=='seb' and password=='boogaloo': return 1 else: return 0 def userExists(self,REQUEST,username): return 1 def userDomains(self,REQUEST,username): return [] def userRoles(self,REQUEST,username): return ['Editor','Manager'] If you want to authenticate against a plain text file, it should be fairly easy to work it out from this example. OK I've got to go to bed. If anyone who knows more wants to let me know, I'll try and compile it into a better guide. I'm sure I've got most of this wrong - but it seems to work for me, so maybe not... There's already a SQL-LoginManager Howto which I don't want to repeat, but I already have. Hiya! LoginManager is definitely the product you need! With LoginManager, it's more or less just a case of plugging in a new so called "data source". You can have more than one of these data sources and have LoginManager authenticate against each of them in order. It's not well documented for newbies (yet), but you can check the code and hopefully you find what you need ... and there are also several how-to's available ... search the archives of the mailinglists too!!! I'm trying to write a html page where some parts gets displayed only if the user has logged in. If the person is not logged in, it should display some generic text, with perhaps a "login" button somewhere. I'm also trying to do this from an external method. For one thing, I'm not sure if I need to add another role or another permission. I can't seem to be able to add another permission, I only see the ability to add a user role. So I tried that, and used SecurityManager.validate(). But it forces you to login, whereas I want a more passive approach. I bypassed this by adding a unique number (as described in the "Searchable Job Board" How-To) to the string I want to do seaching on. Again my question is: Is this behaviour *normal*. using zope to index/search non-zope site?

Hi, I do not know much about indexing sites but after setting up a Zope search of a Zope site, I began to wonder if anyone was using Zope to index and search non-Zope sites. I have this other site served on Apache and Linux and am wondering if I can set up a server to search/index its content. Otherwise I can look for a search provider of some sort, but the site is big enough that they would want to charge me money which I don't have. If anyone has ideas on this please let me know. Sean

Thanks in advance for any help. Does anyone have any experience getting Zope to work with iPlanet 4.1 Web Server on NT? I have used Zope in standalone and Apache+Proxy+Zope configurations, but I have never used pcgi. Is there any way to get Zope to work with iPlanet without using pcgi?

"Document" assembly with Zope

Has anyone brought up the subject of "document assembly" where, for example, a folder contains a series of DTML documents with, for example, a text property that contains html code (or RTF code). Moreover, there would be a heirarchy of folders with similar DTML documents that, upon invoking a Python script, would take (sequentially and recursively) all of the text properties of all of the DTML documents and then create one huge HTML (or whatever) file that is returned to the user? The folders would be akin to chapters in a book and the DTML documents would be like sections within a chapter. I know that Zope has the ability to help navigate through something like this (dtml-tree). Hoewever, I don't know how to write a Python script that could recursively go through a set of folders (from some base folder) and do the necessary pre- and post-processing (led alone return that to the user). Incidentally, this would greatly facilitate a collaborative creation of a document via the web (using FTP and WebDAV). Something akin to a CVS for documents. Even better, because once the document is finished, you can change the permissions so that it "freezes" the text. A new base folder can be used for later "versions" of the text and logic in the base folder (that contains the various version) could be used to find differences between the two versions. Has anyone seen something like that for Zope or know where to begin? Cheers, Ron

A new release of Transparent folders is ready. The only real difference is compatibility with Zope 2.3.3. http://www.zope.org/Members/hathawsh/TransparentFolders CookieCrumbler has been re-released independently of CMF. Thanks to living in the CMF for a while, the security hole has been fixed, it tries hard not to mess up WebDAV and FTP, the cookie setting is configurable with scripts, and default login and logout forms are now included. http://www.zope.org/Members/hathawsh/CookieCrumbler ZDebug is currently not compatible with Zope 2.4.x. No redirect on folder manage_editProperties

My fellow Zopistas, I did something 'quick and dirty' with Zope. Wishing to use my client's existing members database, and not succeeding at adding Zclass instances programatically, I just took their big table of data, massaged it into XML and uploaded it with XML2Zope. Pasting a dtml doc, 'content_html' into each folder (to display the properties) and renaming the folders were mindless chores; I added a ZCatalog, and presto! my first Zope web site. Now for my punishment... Actually, all I want to do is allow the members to update their folder properties, but without redirecting to the ZMI. Yet, unlike with Zclasses, the standard folder manage_editProperties method doesn't seem like a good 'customisation target'. How should this be done?
