Hi Best way is <dtml-var field null="">, then you get an empty string instead of "None". <dtml-if field><dtml-var field></dtml-if field> may in fact not work for integer fields. It will omit zeros as well as nulls, if I understand dtml-if correctly. Getting rid of Vocabulary object

Hello all: I just created a ZClass, nothing fancy: one property sheet and a couple of properties. This ZClass inherits ObjectManager and ZCatalog. Now, when a class instance is added programmatically inside a newly created folder (also programmatically), it creates a "vocabulary" object. How do I prevent my ZClass instance to create this "vocabulary". I have not been able to find that. I don't need the vocabulary since I will be iterating over the objects within the folder and I don't want the vocabulary to be counted in. This was solved temporarily with an dtml if id=vocabulary ..... skip the object ... method. The setup is Zope 2.3.2 with hotfix, RedHat 6.2, Python 1.5.2 Any comments are welcome. Thanks in advance. ??? IDIOT QUESTION QUOTA EXCEEDED ???

To any of you Zopemeisters willing to suffer through my idiot question..... I am beginning to think I have exceeded my "Idiot Question" quota for the year.... Ok, here it is in a nutshell.... I can create instances (TTW) of DTML Method, DTML Document, and even HTML Document (installed product version 0.2) then use either an FTP client or a WEBDav client to make changes and update. NOW, if I try to use any of the previous as a base class for a new ZClass, the instances created (TTW) from this new class CANNOT be managed via an FTP client or a WEBDav client. I have made many false starts over the past week trying to isolate this problem. I have ruled out roles and permissions, although I still might be hosed here. Out of desperation, I am contemplating modifying the HTML Document product to fit my needs. But I shouldn't have to do that because that is what ZClasses is all about. Or I thought so, anyway. Any directions/insights are appreciated. Thanks in advance... Eric

Ok, time to throw in my RMB 0.166 (US$ 0.02). SITE VOCABULARY In other CMS's, e.g., SiteServer, Spectra (Cold Fusion), and Vignette the main use of the subject/keywords is for user profiling and personalization; although they call it Vocbulary, Site Categories, and Category:Keywords respectively. I see the restriction of subject-keywords in CMF as the beginning of standard personalization in Zope... something we sorely lack. Vignette's category:keywords are only two-level, whereas the others are usually multi-level, i.e., a tree. Have a look at http://www.siteserver101.com/book/chapter7/pm16.asp and related pages for info on how SiteServer does it. Basically, you're right in that each site's keywords will be different, depending on its use (intranet, vertical of some sort, etc). An example of this is the DocumentLibrary product that has a legal hierarchical index. Over time we should collect example indexes to easy personalization for websites. USER PROFILING Obviously, we know quite a lot about the visitor before they do anything on the website; we know which languages they prefer (or we think we do from Accept-Language), we know what time they accessed the website, if they have accessed our website before (if we put a cookie on their browser), we know where they accessed from (not for sure, of course) etc. This is good, but it doesn't really give us any indication of what the interests of this visitor are, so we can't make our site a good shop keeper recommending things. We need to create a user profile. One way to do user profiling is to tag the visitor with the keywords of all the pages he or she views, probably also tracking how many times a visitor has seen pages with this or that keyword. This kind of data gathered from the visitors behavior is called implicit data. It is very useful, especially since the visitor doesn't have to log in for it to be effective (you can just use cookies to give the user a 'psudo user'). Later, when the visitor logs in, we can merge the profile of the "pseudo user" with the real user. Another way is to simply ask a logged in user to fill out a form selecting which information he or she is interested in. Data gathered through forms in this way is called explicit data. In any case, you end up with a list of keywords that the user is interested in, maybe even weighted (if it is implicitly collected). PERSONALIZATION RULES Now we need a set of rules, hopefully editable by a normal content manager, to control the personalization on miscellaneous pages. The fact that "business rules" were editiable by normal users, especially useful for shops that want to run many different types of promotions, was one of the major selling points of Broadvision. The personalization rules are basically different queries on the user profiles. Let's say we have a sports site with a (stripped down) site subject vocabulary like this: /sports/ /sports/basketball/ /sports/basketball/redbulls /sports/football/ /sports/football/manchesterunited /sports/golf Let's say a visitor has an implicitly gathered (through tracking browsing) user profile like this: KEYWORD "HITS" /sports/ 11 /sports/basketball/ 4 /sports/basketball/redbulls 4 /sports/football 6 /sports/football/manchesterunited 6 /sports/golf 1 We can have rule like this: Show [the sport the visitor likes the most] = which of /sports/* have the most hits = football (I'm from Europe) Based on this we can have an area on our site template dedicated to promoting products that fit the user profile, in this case it would probably show footballs and football collectibles etc. We could even go as far as show collectibles for the team we know he or she is interested in. IMPLEMENTATION IDEAS I'd like to see a new CMF tool, portal_pzn, that would store the personalization keyword hierarchy and the business rules. I think that in the beginning, we can just let personalization rules be small python expressions returning some results. We could also group rules into rule sets, a la SiteServer, to make them more manageable. Let's say the tool was like this: portal_pzn/ vocabulary/ /sports/ basketball/ redbulls football/ manchesterunited golf/ rules/ set1/ favorite_3_sports = "return user.behavior.top('/sports/*', 3)" discount = "if user.type == 'VIP': return 20" etc. And in our code we would write: <dtml-in "portal_pzn.set1.favorite_3_sports(user)" ><dtml-var "promotions[_['sequence-index']" ></dtml-in> Each user object is extended with two profile objects: behavior = implicit data; each keyword has an associated "hit" interests = explicit data; just a list of keywords the user has explicitly said he's interested in Just like with sessions, we could store personalization in the ZODB but it'll probably be too slow for many uses. We should use a storage that is fast both for writes and reads, which means it'll probably not be very persistent. We could have it synchronize regularly with a more persistent storage, e.g., ZODB. Interests are more like subscriptions, and like subscriptions, have their uses. This is still simple. I'm sure, e.g., Broadvision offers much more when it comes to personalization. These are just thoughts; I don' thave any plans to implement personalization yet. But you still want some two-way connection between the two. Is anyone else reaching similar levels of complexity? Maybe I should re-factor and "divide and conquer"!! Sorry if this makes no sense! The scope of a Zclass CreateInObjectManager call?

OK, so I'm a newbie. Been working with Zope for about two weeks. On most problems, I usually find that I know what I WANT to do, then struggle mightily with Zope/Python syntax for half a day, then produce the 2-3 powerful lines of DTML that do exactly what I want. Not this time. This time, I'm really stumped. I've built a class. Works fine. Now I'm trying to enhance it. I want instances of this class to be created one folder DOWN from wherever the user asks to add an object. Which folder depends on one of the fields/properties in the instance being added. (for context, this is a tracking system of jobs and clients. I want to create a (class instance id) of job "5240" *inside* an "Adobe" folder, creating "Adobe" first if it doesn't exist. So why wouldn't something like this work as my "_add" method? <dtml-call "manage_addFolder(Client,'')"> <dtml-with "_[Client]"> <dtml-with "JobTicket.createInObjectManager(REQUEST['id'], REQUEST)"> </dtml-with> </dtml-with> The way I see it, that should push the newly built "client" folder onto the namespace, and create the new job inside of that. Instead, it puts both the folder and the jobticket instance in the common "jobs" parent folder. I've spent hours looking in the mailing archives, the how-tos, the source code - and I'm lost. Ok guys here's the problem I have various labs who each have users - each lab should be able to see it's own data only which is organised as follows... Root |-->MyDB |-->acl_users (for the managers) |-->Groups |-->Group1 |-->acl_users (for each of the members of the lab) I have 2 roles created in the mydb folder (dbusers and dbmanagers) - each of the members of each of the labs is assigned into one of these two roles. All my dtml methods are stored in the mydb folder. The dbusers and dbmanagers have view permissions and access contents information for all these methods. I want the users to log in and then be able to look at the index_html in the mydb folder which then iterates through the groups that they are in and displays them. I thought that if I gave the role dbusers permission to view the index_html document they would have to log in and then the document would work as required. Only it doesn't.... I recently created some RealAudio files and attempted to stick them into Zope. When people try to "view" the files, though, weird things happen. End result is they don't play. RealPlayer gives errors about file type ond version and stuff like that. When I put the same files on my apache server, all is well. What am I doing wrong? If you read httpd.conf on apache, you will see that real player's requests are non-standard. I don't really know what to do with this bit of knowledge, but I thought you could use it. SQL connection isolation / multiplexing

Hi everyone. Hope this is the right place for this. I have a data registration app running in zope that talks to a MySQL database. When a new piece of data is submitted, i need to generate a unique ID from the database and then update several tables with that ID and other information. I went about this by making 2 SQL methods: sql_register_1 - inserts data into a table with an AUTO_INCREMENT field sql_register_2 - inserts data into a second table, calling LAST_INSERT_ID() I know that SQL_LAST_INSERT() is connection-isolated in MySQL, i.e. inserting into table 1 from one connection will not alter LAST_INSERT_ID()'s value in another connection. I don't know, however, how Zope handles Z MySQL Connections. Looking at the open connections to the DB server, and the running processes, I would guess that each Zope child process maintains separate connections. Does this mean that I am guaranteed to only have one parallel web request per DB connection? I am concerned that if two requests hit the server at the same time, the following will happen: Request 1: sql_register_1 Request 2: sql_register_1 Request 1: sql_register_2 If these go over separate DB connections, no problem. If they don't, kaboom. Answers? Thanks for any light. ~ZF
