I think the question comes up a lot because when you have a db that is non-relational, it's extremely difficult to get a handle on it's performance / reliability. With a relational database there are some standard benchmarks (granted the vendors manipulate these in various ways but you can get a fairly good idea of their general performance). The anecdotal, it's fast because I've seen it's fast is not quite as good as a standard test. Most of the sql database vendors provide some means for managing the underlying files that actually store the data. Allowing me to add more, put them on separate partitions, etc. They also make it fairly easy to get the doc on how they layout the storage in these data files. They actually feature that in their development oriented doc -- to show how much better their technique is then other vendors. To reduce the number of questions in this area, it seems like these two issues should be addressed. Anecdotally :) --- I've become more comfortable with the Zope approach through usage and gathering the doc that is available in various places. I just had to chip in and repeat your point again just to emphasise it, since this question comes up so much :-) I would always use the ZODB FileStorage unless there was a very good reason not to. It's fast, supports undos, is easy to back up, and keeps all your application in one place. The only two good reasons, not to do so are: 1) if your OS has a nastily small file size limit (e.g. pre-2.4 Linuxen) 2) If you need to access the same data from elsewhere (e.g. membership data in an LDAP storage) sebGet more from the Web. In their respective domains I feel they are each the best 'free' choice available, if not simply the best choice. I still voted for Zope.

Jason, I haven't done Sybase in quite a while but somewhere you'll probably have to point to your local installation of the Sybase client. Within which should be both an include directory containing the respective CT-Lib header files (for the compile step) and a lib directory with link libraries (ctlib.so or libct.a or somesuch). passing method names into a python script?

I want to pass the name of a Z SQL Method into a python script, then execute that method and iterate over the results. Is this possible? My app uses a lot of dropdowns populated from database tables. Rather than rewriting the code for each one, I'd like to create one python script that takes a z sql method as a parameter, then executes it and spits out the html for the dropdown. SybaseDA2.0v2 installation problem

Hello, I have a feeling I am doing something really silly or I'm simply missing something here. I retrieved and installed the rpm for sybase 11.9.2 (common) and then untarballed the sybaseDA package ... and then followed the instructions as far as how to make it, and got this at the "make" stage? Is there a package that I am supposed to have to make this work in Zope that I just forgot to install, or... something even simpler? There are very good reasons for modularizing SQL methods, even if they do increase your object count, IMHO... If you have ever build a big application in anything like ASP or other templating setup that mixes presentation and logic, you really start to want modularization very quickly, especially if the application has: 1. Muliple developers 2. Is constantly changing I think the real solution to this problem (object clutter) is an updated version of Transparent folders minus the namespace bug, and perhaps minus the bug (I'm not sure if this one is reported), that makes transparent folders break Ram Cache Managers... As soon as a more stable version of Transparent Folders is released, it serves as a good place to put SQL methods and logic, leaving the presentation templates in the main folder for simplicity's sake... Probably a result of the anti-windows rhetoric tossed around so much. (which we see sometimes within this list as well). Or as well, a bias from the windows community. The VB, Delphi and VC++ guys are the same and if they think they have to learn Pyhton to use Zope, they wont. ZCatalog Searching on Path

I would like to be able to search a ZCatalog based on the path to the cataloged object. Basically I would like to say "Show me all of the cataloged objects that fall within this folder" and have it return a list. Since the ZCatalog uses the physical path to identify objects I know the data is stored, but has anyone found a way to search on that data? --Brian
