Hi Folks, We're working on a transaction processing system. At one point in the flow, an administrator needs to see a list of all pending requests, and approve or reject them. Since the information is all in a database, we'll be doing a query against the database to build the form on the fly. If the first row has a field called "value1", the second a field called "value2", etc, how do you go about processing the results from the form when you don't know how many fields there will be? Or is there a better approach to this problem than naming the fields like this? When I've done similar things in ASP, I'd pass the number of rows in the form as a hidden field, and then use that value to iterate through the fields. Is there something comparable to do in Zope, or is there a better way to do this? Still very new to Zope, so be gentle. :-) Thanks for any help! Sean McMains

Zope promotion...

Hi All I was wondering the other day if any body was in charge of zope promotion?? There seems to have been a relevant topic in zope-dev discussing the placement of Zope on CNET and so on... I was browsing the SuSE Linux Portal http://portal.suse.de/en/ And thought it would be good for Zope to get articles on similar sites... At least then people would get to know about Zope and so on, which I would hope would be good... Anyone else got any thoughts? Cheers Chris K

How to put a dictionary in REQUEST?

I just discovered that the REQUEST object doesn't support dictionaries. Right? So, given that I'm writing DTML because I'm in the middle of a calendar tag, how can I create a dictionary for the duration of a request and add items to it? -- Loren

Zope's performance on xBSD

Hello, I'm using Zope on FreeBSD and OpenBSD and I've noticed some serious performance issues. Since I hadn't experienced any problems at the past with Linux, I did some benchmarks. I've written a small program that connects to Zope and tries to retrieve a non-existant URL (source code appended). While Linux performed almost linearly depending on the number of hits/sec, FreeBSD and OpenBSD performed exponential. I did the following experiment: I installed a binary distribution of python-1.5.2 (pkg_add or apt-get) and I compiled Zope-2.3.3+HotFix from sources (with wo_pcgi.py). I entered Zope's management screen and expanded all folders. I ran the previous program and after about 1000 hits I reloaded the page and measured the time it gets to finish. siteroot with virtualhostmonster

finally, what i've always wanted to do with the zope server domain name and port, hide it. i first tried virtualhostmonster but when we processed an input form, the value needed the PATH_INFO and it reflected the virtual stuff and therefore crashed the form. but with siteroot it did the same thing that vhm did, hide the port numbers. now with them together, is it safe to keep them that way? or do i have to delete vhm? please help me in understanding the differences between the two. thank you. changing ZClass bases

I'm an extremely experienced object technologist just getting into Zope. The Zope Book (p. 211) says that it's not possible to change the base classes of a ZClass. The wording and context are a bit ambiguous, so I'm not entirely sure, but the obvious reading is that once you've defined a ZClass you cannot add, remove, or replace any of its base classes. Is this true? Or does it just mean "not through the techniques being discussed in that part of the book"? What do I do if I've been developing a ZClass and decide I need to add (or remove) some functionality through base classes? For example, suppose I want to add persistence later on? Is the answer different if I don't have any instances I need to keep? Is there a way to export a ZClass to an editable text format, so I could delete it from Zope, make the changes, then reimport it?

Icon Product?

I'm trying to create an icon zclass for use in navbars. I've created a zclass containing string attributes link, alt_text, and image (as a url). I've tried various ways including python script to get the icon to render as <a href="..link.." alt="..alt_text.."><.. img tag ..></a> to no avail. I'd prefer to keep the calling syntax as brief as possible (otherwise, what's the point of the class?). Anybody have any suggestions (or existing products)?

LoginManager and multiple UserSources

Gaah! Apologies for empty email preceding... Some thoughts on LoginManager and multiple UserSources... Here's LoginManager's getItem() method, which goes through the user sources, looking for an user with the right name: def getItem(self,name): # Retrieve a user with the given name, or None if no such # user exists. Uses the registry of UserSources, after # first checking for the superusSer/root users. if rootUsers.has_key(name): return rootUsers[name].__of__(self) for source in self.userSourcesList: user = source.__of__(self).getItem(name) if user is not None: return user return None This is called by a LoginMethod to retrieve a user object, which it then attempts to authenticate by calling the user object's authenticate() method. Now, what happens when you have multiple UserSources? getItem() returns the first user it finds. But it does this without attempting any authentication. So if you have two UserSources, both of which contain the same user, but for which the first won't authenticate, but the second will, you _don't_ get logged in (because getItem() just returns the first, which will fail, and the second doesn't get checked at all). Wouldn't it be "nice" if LoginManager could return multiple users from multiple sources, allowing the LoginMethod to try authenticating each, and decide for itself on whether to authenticate the user depending on the combination of results (eg you might want to authenticate provided at least one succeeds, or you might demand that they all succeed, etc.). Does this make sense to anyone else? Or am I being a complete nutcase? I should note that I don't (at this point) need this in any operational sense, I was just doing it for debugging purposes, but it strikes me that this would be an useful extension, and that one day I might well want it. Would this be a good thing? Would this be a waste of time? Is this an incredibly bad idea for some reason?
