best way to define variables for form parameterization?

What's the best way to define variables to be used in a parameterized DTML document? Let's say I have a folder hierarchy where all the folders can share a single index_html at the root, except that there are a couple of differences in various places that are not directly derivable from the usual variables (id, title, etc.). For instance, an organization chart represented as a folder hierarchy, and a standard welcome page that includes among other things the physical location of the part of the organization represented by the selected folder and the phone number of the receptionist at that location. My index_html page could have <dtml-var orgloc> and <dtml-var receptPhone> buried in it somewhere, then all I have to do is define orgloc and receptPhone at appropriate places in the folder hierarchy. I could of course make them DTML Methods that just returned a string, but it seems pretty heavy-handed to define a method just to get a variable value. Is there a better way to specify variable values? Some kind of dictionary mechanism? Suppose I had 10 or 20 such variables -- I wouldn't want to deal with the proliferation of one-line DTML Methods throughout the hierarchy. I just want a way for each folder to register values of whatever variables it wants to override, for use by parameterized pages. One thought I had was to subclass ObjectManager (either in Python or as a ZClass) and add a mechanism that looks in a dictionary stored in a "variables" instance variable, then if the desired variable wasn't there, look at the parent, etc. Before I launch off into this escapade, please tell me if (a) there's a straightforward way to define variables like this; (b) the whole idea is confused; or (c) there's an available Product for this.

getting a list of authorized objects

So I have a number of folders (in a CMF site, but that shouldn't matter) with various permissions. If I want certain roles to access the folder, I give it 'View' and 'Access contents information' permissions, and the reverse otherwise. In Zope 2.3.3, I could do a dtml-in on "objectValues(['Folder'])" with skip_unauthorized and it would work passably well. It might not get the sequence variables right, but at least things got shown when they should have been and not otherwise. Now I'm trying it on Zope 2.4, and no such luck. I know that there was some rewriting of the dtml-in rendering between these releases (probably the restricted execution arctitecture), but whatever happened, it doesn't work like it used to. Now I get a KeyError on the first attribute of the first unauthorized thing that comes up in the list. This is a result of trying to do this operation on a "Access contents info" restricted object. It's not skipping unauthorized. So I decided that I'd go and use ZopeFind, but since the folders might have local roles, it doesn't really work easily. I've been trying to figure out how to find out whether an object is allowed in a PythonScript so I can do it myself, but no luck so far. So either: 1) what's wrong with dtml-in in 2.4.0, and how can I fix it? or 2) how do I get this behaviour otherwise? --jcc (blast!)

[Catalog/ZCatalog] external RID references: bad idea?

Hi. Faced with a need to make large numbers of references to objects within other objects, wanting to get certain information about the linked objects without waking them up in the ZODB, etc., and wanting to store the references efficiently, I thought that the Catalog might be an avenue to explore, since it had solved some somewhat similar issues. So I studied it. Interface declarations will make these kind of questions a bit more straightforward in the future, but for now... My question: Would it be a bad idea to use a given object's catalog RID to store an object reference (elsewhere), and then using the RID to get the UID, the metadata, and or the actual object as needed, using standard ZCatalog methods (getobject, getMetadataForRID, getIndexDataForRID, getpath, etc.)? [If this isn't too bad of an idea, then I will have to subclass ZCatalog to add a method that calls _catalog.hasuid for a given object's physical path--this will return the RID.] [If this is actually approaching a good idea, I would propose to ZC to add a clear interface-happy getRID in catalog and ZCatalog] Risks I see: primary one is that, unless I get ZC's blessing on this and a clear addition to the (nonexistent?) catalog/zcatalog interfaces of the needed getRID function, this is a hack. I'd be relying on the internal workings of the catalog staying the same. secondary risk I see, and I hope not a problem, is that I'd have to be waking up the catalog every time I needed to mess with any reference in my objects. I'm hoping that this won't be a problem merely because the catalog is such an integral part of the inner workings that it will always be "awake". I would really appreciate any thoughts or concerns about this approach. Thanks Gary

Invalid connection string

Hello everyone, I've got PoPy running as a database adapter, except I must have a US plug to go into a European electrical outlet! When I follow the example for connecting PoPy to my PSQL database (which is empty), I get the "Invalid connection string" error. I saw a solution to this, but it looked like a hack. I followed the example, but no dice on this, either... Anyone got any bright ideas on this? Thanks! Russell

Permissions for CMF portal content object based on CMF-Image

Hi, I have created a new product based on CMFDefault-Image, CMFCore-portal-content, and CMFDefault-Dublin... Do I need all these for the base classes, or is CMFDefault-Image the only one I need as it calls the others? I have setup the factory, portal-types, and skins and I can add new instances ok. I can edit and save changes to the properties of an instance. My problem is when I try to upload an image and save it I have insufficient permission (ZMI login box pops up). The the_editForm is setup with 'modify_portal_content' in the types tool actions tab. The the_editForm calls a python script with: req = context.REQUEST context.manage_upload( file=req[ 'file' ] ) req[ 'RESPONSE' ].redirect( '%s/the_editForm' % context.absolute_url() ) Is this script the problem or am I missing a permission somewhere? Kaivo Document Library

Has anyone developed a method to replace an existing document in the library with a new one, or better yet, edit a document and just save the changes? The only way I can see now is to delete the document using the numbered list, then add the updated document as a new one. Any solutions or comments? Thanks Lynn

Thanks, Eric! I thought there might be something along these lines in Zope. I should have mentioned in my original message that I actually needed to pass several values from each record to the next page, so having them in a list is only workable if the order that they appear in the list is reliable. With so many web browsers out there, I didn't feel comfortable that the lists' ordering could be trusted, since there's no guarantee what order the browser will use to send the data to the server. Jim Penny had another example that added an index to the fields, a la my "value1" approach: http://www.zope.org/Members/jpenny/variable_length_forms This forces each value to have its own discrete name, so you can be sure you're getting what you need. I am, however, glad to know that this approach is available too, as there are places it will be invaluable. Thanks again! Sean
