Add more examples in Zope Book API reference

A few notes regarding Zope Book, mainly addressed to people at Zope Corporation: I wish the Zope Book API reference contained much more examples than it does today. I understand that from a purely definition perspective the examples should not be neccessary if the definition is correct. However, real people feel much more comfortable seeing real usage of defined commands and funtions. Examples make them feel more at ease with the API, and consequently prevent frequent questions in the mailing list. I think that every and each function should list two examples. Look at it: A function like DateTime.dow() is so simple that any example may seem unneccesary. But it is ridiculously easy to write the example, so why not do it? And while you are at it, you could add some advanced example showing an unusual usage of the function. A function ZCatalog.getobject() is more complicated. There is a short definition in the API reference, but there is no information describing what is the purpose of REQUEST variable as an optional parameter of getobject. I have no idea what will happen if I put a REQUEST as a getobject parameter. If there was a single sentence telling me about it, that would be great. But if there was an example of usage, an example with bogus values like "Elvis", that would be nirvana. By the way, all example values featuring "foo" and "bar" should be IMHO changed to something like "Elvis". I know that "foo/bar" pair is very popular, but IMHO it is rather confusing to newcomers. Furthermore, we still have at least one completely undocumented function that is absolutely essential to ZCatalog chapter in Zope Book. It is reindex_object. Automatic cataloging does not work without calling reindex_object during ZClass instance creation, yet it is never mentioned in the ZCatalog chapter, and it is not described in the API reference. There are other undocumented functions and options (such as sort_expr option of dtml-in), but I take it these are going to be documented when Zope Corporation deems them stable (that is both non-crashing and fitting the API philosophy), and they are often nonessential. -- Milos Prudek

Doing security the right way roles/localroles/permissions

I am building a site for some schools. It has a structure something like this: Home acl_users/ class01/ teacher01/ teacher02/ teacher03/ ... student01/ student02/ student02/ ... class02/ ... Every class is an objectManager, and I give the users a local role of "manager" for their own area. I do this in dtml as it has to be automated. Users and such are set up by secretaries, and they should not have to understand security ti add a student to a class. But I wonder if it would be smarter to set the permissions directly for their own areas? Is it dangerous to give them local roles of managers? Large file downloading - slow response - solved.

Oh rat's ass. I spent about an hour trying to find the reason for Zope's slow performance, when serving large files until I found that it is the way Zope at the moment works. That it takes time to read the file into memory, create the temp-file and send it to the client. For my 8 MB file it took about a minute ( I logged it with the -M option ). Now my question is, that is there a way of improving this performance and is that one minute time normal for others too? How have users responded, for example while using Document Library product with large files? Our installation is on a Linux box, where we have Apache and with rewrite-rules forward querys to Zope. For now I had to create a static directory, where I will store large files and access them in Zope via LocalFS. When served to a client I write urls so that the files are server directly from Apache. If you have any other ideas how to make things work better I would be delighted to know. -huima

Adding a permission to an ObjectManager derived ZCLass

I've got an ObjectManager and Folder derived ZClass that contains instances of a secind rather simple ZClass. It works fine, but I am trying to add a permission to the container ZClass that will let a user with that permission view the management interface (the 'Contents' tab) of the container and add, edit, or delete the simple ZClass instances in the container. The container doesn't have any property sheets, but the simple ZClass does. Does anyone have a simple walkthrough of what I need to do? Michael Bernstein. P.S. I'm still feeling a bit of the Newbie myself, so this answer may need to be corrected by someone with more background, but I figured it was a good chance for me to contribute _something_ back to this wonderful community. In the Zope Book, Chapter 12 covers "Extending Zope." It teaches you how to create new Zope products and then to use Z Classes. That's probably the right approach to doing this project if you want to learn the programmatic approach. You would start by adding a new Customer product through the Control Panel interface in Zope, then add your properties to it. Then you'd add the DTML documents to do the stuff you want: add, edit, delete, etc. Everything gets stored automagically in the Zope DB that way. But another option presents itself. You could download and install MetaPublisher from Beehive. This is a quite wonderful product that lets you define new classes and objects with properties, including the automatic generation of screens to add, edit, search, and delete those objects. As a little test, I used MP to create your Customer object. Took about 3 minutes. Hope this helps a little and isn't too far from how a real Zopista would do this! stx_to_html.py doesn't render tables in structured text

Trying to figure this one out. I'm using Barabbas stx_to_html.py in Zope 2.4 I took the Zope regression/example.stx file and try rendering it, but tables are shown as paragraphs. The output from DWIClass, shows: StructuredTextParagraph( |||| A Simple Two-column Table || || Column A || Column B || || Apples || Oranges ||, [ ]) Where I expect StructuredTextTable instead. I suspect this has something to do with class munging in stx_to_html, but I can't figure it out. I've toyed around.. Anyone have any ideas? Real time triggers in Zope

Hi Zopistas I'm trying to create a notification / trigger function in Zope. Since there are typically a couple of ways to implement things in Zope, I'd like to hear some suggestions on how to accomplish the following: 1. Trigger an article to become displayed at or after a certain date and time. Like preloaded press releases that are then "released" for view at the given date. Or pages that are announced, or product details that are launched etc. 2. The Zope server should send an email notification to someone at a specific TIME, not when a certain submit button or website is viewed. The means that the server has to implement a not web interface based trigger (real-time).
