Trouble accessing Zope FTP port from XEmacs

(This is all on a Mac G4 Powerbook running MacOS 10.2.1.) I got Zope 2.6.0beta1 installed a few days ago (right before the final 2.6.0 release I see), added postgresql and psycopgda, and began messing around with SQL methods in preparation for some consulting work. The last piece in the tool chain is to be able to edit Zope code from something other than a <textarea>. That's where XEmacs comes in, and where my problems begin. I'm running Zope in the default fashion, so it's listening to port 8021 for ftp. If I try to visit /admin@localhost:8021/ from XEmacs it correctly does the little efs dance, however, I always get the error message: *ftp admin@localhost* seems not a pty. Kill? (y or n) I see no messages scroll in the window from which I started Zope. I can connect to the running Zope using plain old ftp: % ftp localhost 8021 Trying ::1... ftp: connect to address ::1: Connection refused Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. 220 montanaro.dyndns.org FTP server (Medusa Async V1.21 [experimental]) ready. Name (localhost:skip): admin 331 Password required. Password: 230 Login successful. Remote system type is UNIX. Using binary mode to transfer files. ftp> though the initial messages seem a bit weird to me. I peeked at /etc/hosts and saw two localhosts lines: 127.0.0.1 localhost 255.255.255.255 broadcasthost ::1 localhost Figuring that was possibly the problem, I then tried visiting /admin@127.0.0.1:8021/ from XEmacs. Same error. I poked around Google and Google Groups looking for suggestions related to that error message, but turned up nothing useful. I don't know what the weird ::1 line is for, though I suspect it has something to do with NetInfo, so I'm a bit leery of deleting it. I did pause to try GNU Emacs. Connecting to /admin@127.0.0.1:8021/ failed, apparently because it didn't select port 8021, but instead tried to just connect to port 21. Any suggestions to get remote editing from XEmacs working? howto set up a large set of users in a school

Hi I would like to set up a zope site for my school with user profiles and authentication (1200 high school students in my London based school). At the moment I have a php/mysql solution. How do I set up 1300 users (100 teacher accounts)? I don't fancy adding manually into acl_users? Suneil

Zope products, ZClasses, Database rows, XML or what?

Hi, After having studied Zope for about a month (in my spare time) and having read this list's messages during that time, I'm still ambivalent as to what to use for a website I'm developing. For example, several of the pages in the website will each be dedicated to an individual author. Each page will feature a short bio, a list of books authored, possibly a list of articles authored, and links to interviews and other interesting web sites/pages about or by the author. Each book in a list could have information about when it was published, ISBN, any awards received, links to reviews, links to one or more sources where the book can be purchased, and other interesting details. In some cases, the book could have a link to its own detailed page, within the website. (No, it's NOT Amazon II ;-) Prior to discovering Zope I had been working on implementing this with PHP, possibly combined with a relational database such as PostgreSQL and/or XML/XSL. With Zope, I have started working on the rendering using Page Templates. However, I'm still undecided as to what is the best way to handle all the data and content. Some of the recent messages indicate that ZClasses are not the way to go, that one should use Products, but the Zope Book (Extending Zope) describes products as being implemented with ZClasses or in Python (which I've been trying to learn too). The book also briefly describes support for XML but there is no mention of XSL, presumably because ZPT is the preferred mechanism for rendering different views. And of course, there is Gadfly and the relational DB adapters, which potentially would allow storing most of it in, say, PostgreSQL, my original preference, because this could hold lots and lots of data. I've also taken a look and installed CMF, but it doesn't appear to be a good match, since most of the content will not be long text articles, but rather short classifiable information about a given topic. I realize there's no single answer and that each solution has different costs, learning curve, future flexibility, etc. associated with it. I hope that input and feedback from the list will help in reaching a decision. Thanks in advance for any comments and suggestions. For reference, I've been using 2.5.1 on WinXP, but the target will most likely run on Linux. Joe

Catching Dababase IntegrityError

Hi, Does anyone know how to catch this data integrity error? I was trying to give a more friendlier message than the Zope error_message when someone accidentially enters a duplicate Primary Key name of an existing record. Error Type: IntegrityError Error Value: (1062, "Duplicate entry 'Big Foot' for key 1") I have tried the following in my <dtml-var standard_error_message> , but it did not worked: <dtml-if "error_type=='IntegrityError'"> <h3>Duplicate Entry!</h3> <LI>This is a duplicate entry of an existing Database record. Low cost zope hosting?

I'm looking for a low cost web host for zope. Some things I've noticed on the zope solution provider directory http://www.zope.org/Resources/ZSP Is that most of these don't have prices (probably because they are offering more than just hosting but additional support and customization) or that the hosting costs are substantially above for example, php/apache/mysql hosting companies. Good Php/mysql hosting companies are now going for as low as $10-15 a month. One with zope doesn't have to be THAT cheap, but it shouldn't cost an arm and a leg either. I'm not looking for a host for a production environment, just for a personal/semi-play environment, but one with scripting support for php and mysql. I am running zope from my (illegal) home web server and can always use the free zope hosting http://www.nipltd.net/Free Services, but I am curious about what solutions other zope developers are opting for these days. Are you just getting standard php/mysql hosting and then paying/begging for the hosting company to let you run zope? Well, I found the answer to my question after 3 hours of digging on google. It was discussed in great detail a year ago on the zope-dev list: http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zope-dev/2001-June/011775.html Everyone seems to disagree but it looks like I cant use GPL'd Products without GPL'ing the entire zope installation. We use the term 'bussed' as in: "I had better document this in case I get bussed" -- run over by a bus. Seems appropriate sometimes... I posted this to the list a while back but since then a new version has come out. I use a tool to create Viewlets...step-by-step screen captures with call-outs and text balloons to fully show software procedures. The old version used Java and its own structure for the presentation. Worked great on Windows boxes but was flaky on other platforms. The new version generates pure Flash .swf files. Just upload them into Zope and link them in and away you go! Very nice accompaniment to printed docs or manuals. And, you can even print out the slides in a "Powerpointy" way. Very handy. The free version is fully functional with a watermark of the company's logo on it. And the Viewlets created with the free version can be compiled with the licensed version with no change. Half price for educational institutions. Worth a look. creating static html by export out of ZOPE

Hi, I'm using ZOPE for our intranet content, but now I'd like to publish some information on our website. On this URL we haven't support for ZOPE or PYTHON. Therefore I'm looking for a possiblity to export our static content into static HTML. Is there a possiblity to create something like that? Thanks in advance, Oliver

Issue 219 - Logout not working (IE problem?)

Hi, I am having some problems when I try to log out of an application I have built using Zope. I have used a Cookie Crumbler and am logging in to the application using a modified version of the login_form created. The problem is when I try to go to the logout page: http://locahost:8080/manage_zmi_logout. I have tried it with different browsers and, while the results vary, nothing is working as I want it to. In IE6, there is a pop-up, asking me to enter my username and password. I know that this is to log out of the http authentication service, but why does it appear three times? At least at the end of that, I'm logged out. In Netscape 4.7, it fails to connect to authorise the username and password. Does anybody know what security settings I should have in my browser (preferably both of them) to properly log out of the application. If possible, I'd like to do it without the pop-up. I looked the problem up on the net and found this: http://collector.zope.org/Zope/219. Any update would be welcome. TIA, Micheál Healy
