Hi Zope staff, I have this slight problem whenever I try to download Zope-2.5.1-linux2-x86.tgz <http://www.zope.org/Products/Zope/2.5.1/Zope-2.5.1-linux2-x86.tgz> . Instead of being able to save the with the extension ".tgz" it saves it as ".gz" As I'm new to Linux I'm wondering if this is one of the reason I can't seem to follow McDonc's Installation tutorial (step 5). I took the liberty of saving a screenshot of the dl for you to see.

Yes - Zope is THE answer... ;) I don't usually speak in absolutes, but I know a good match when I see one. Take a look at the CMF and perhaps Plone (which is a nice UI on top of CMF). Both would be easily be a good starting framework for content-oriented sites (since you want to catalog events, news items, photos, ads). The CMF does membership, discussion, etc. You would need to do a bit of work to get email-list management appended to such a framework, but other than that there are a lot of people who have done at least a good portion of the things you mention using the CMF. Another nice benefit to Zope and the CMF is relational database integration for things like booking. For example, let's hypothetically say you had an event that had booking info related to it stored in the relational database. In the Plone UI, for example, in the skins tool you would simply add a page template and python script that used a ZSQL method to get a listing of bookings for that event object, then you would go into the "actions" for the event type in the Types tool and add the name of that method as an object, and it would automatically appear in the UI as a tab for the object. So you could then click on that tab to list your bookings stored in a relational database for the said content object. I guess what I am saying is that Zope really exemplifies the "best in class" in creating web applications with hybrid storage paradigms. http://cmf.zope.org http://www.plone.org I work for a large daily US newspaper, and we are porting most of our site infrastructure to the CMF (it's good stuff, I promise!). Plus, Python really gives you the ease of PHP with the scalability of Java. I would post this question to the Zope-CMF list or to the Plone-Users list (on sourceforge); I think you might get some good responses from people who have created components like portions of what you describe. I'm not afraid to learn new stuff, I just don't want to end up choosing the wrong system!!! DTML tree with ZSQL methods

Seeing the other tree question made me think of something I have been curious about: how to build trees from ZSQL methods. I have a MySQL table of cars with car-common fields: YEAR, MAKE, MODEL, BODYTYPE, COLOR, etc. What I would like to do is have a tree showing the words as above like this: +YEAR +MAKE +MODEL ...etc Expanding the word YEAR would show a list of distinct years with maybe a count of cars for each year. Same concept for the others top levels. +2002 (57) +2001 (39) +2000 (43) ...etc Expanding the actual YEAR would show all MAKEs (and counts) for that YEAR. Same concept for the other criteria. How would the tree code look for doing something like this? And the ZSQL methods? Pointers or links to available material would be appreciated. Thanks Allen

Session from RAM to FS

Hi. I would like to store a BIG files into a DB. Yes, I would like to do it via the session, because there are should be a pool of several files to upload. Well, all is fine except the Session is in the RAM. So when I allow users to store a lot of data in the RAM, server can go down. Is there some trick to store session data in the FS? I mean that session manager, which came with Zope 2.5.x out of the box? dtml tree quest (expanding individual items)

Hi, I have a frames based page in which one frame is a dtml-tree representing a LocalFS, and the other frame shows the contents of the file on which a user has clicked on in the tree. Now in the contents frame the pages have internal links which are basically other pages somewhere in the tree. Now I can get the id (in the LocalFS) of the link on which a user clicks. Is it possible to expand the parent node(in case it has no children) of an object ,or itself (in case it has children) given the id of an object in a dtml-tree? Greetings! I have been playing with Zope and CMF. Scavenged an old HP Workstation, a B132L with PA-RISC processor, little RAM and a small disk(2.1GB). Got Debian Linux installed, along with debs of Zope, Zope-CMF. (PostgreSQL too, in case I ever figure out how to move my data in there. Hints appreciated.) I now have a test-CMF site running. I have created a few folders and users, uploaded a few files, published and played around. I saw that Zope-CMF supported WebDAV. And I saw the light. My great vision was to create a Windows "Network Place" to read/write to Zope directly from Windows. This way, I envisioned, I could have people use familiar tools to save documents to a familiar environment. While at the same time, we could attach some metadata to the items, and use versioning between files, with full accounting on who edited what file, when, and possibly keeping track of several versions of the SAME FILE, in the SAME PLACE using the SAME Filename. It almost works. I can create "Network Places", save documents to the Zope folders. Only thing missing is the ability to have Zope versioning on files created in this manner. Can it be done? Anyone else tried this approach? Experiences? Good? Bad? Do's and DON'Ts? Tips, tricks? PostgreSQL pointers? KnutM

xml-rpc TypeError "too many arguments"

Hello, all. I have been having continued quirks with xml-rpc. First here is a little bit of backgroud about what I am trying to accomplish. My apologies for the length of this post. In some circumstances, rather than an html-generating content server I would like to use zope as a method of easily publishing some existing python funcitons via xml-rpc. For instance, I have some windows system administration functions that I would like to make callable from my linux based web server in a secure fashion. Zope seems to me to be designed to do just this sort of thing, right? That may all be useless info, but I just wanted to include it in case my problem was more a case of using zope outside it's intended purpose. So here's my actual question :) A couple of functions that I want to publish are user creation and deletion functions, named (creatively) AddUser and DeleteUser. These functions are external methods which work with COM objects among other things. The problem is that half the time when I call these methods I get an error Error Type: TypeError Error Value: too many arguments Opening the ZMI and performing a "save changes" on the external method makes the exact same call work just fine. I'm not sure where to even begin looking which is what prompted the long "am I doing something fundamentally wrong" part of this message. Any help is greatly appreciated. I don't mind getting my hands dirty but I don't know where to begin. Thanks, Mark Roach
