Zope and garbage collection

Dumb question here: Having a user browse to a web page which involves a python object clearly creates the object. What happens when the user either switches his browser to some other web site or turns off his modem? Does that somehow delete the object and, if not, does the developer need to concern himself with garbage collection? In other words, is garbage collection automatic with Zope?

tal:define limitations

I just stumbled across the fact that variables that are defined via tal:define apparently must conform to Python identifier conventions (must start with a letter or underscore, etc.). This doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere in the documentation. However, URL arguments and form field names are not subject to the same limitations at all, which leaves me with no simple way to define default values in TAL for optional URL arguments or form fields that use a number as the identifier for a name/value pair. Example: http://example.com/sample?1=off I would like the following code to work: <html tal:define="1 request/1 | string:on"> This should have the effect of defaulting the argument to 'on' within the context of the page when the URL is http://example.com/sample but allowing it to be overridden via the URL parameter 1=off. However, when adding similar code to a Page Template, I get an error: Compilation failed TAL.TALDefs.TALError: invalid define syntax: '\n 1 request/1 | string:on', at line 7, column 3 My use-case is simple presentation logic, but this mismatch between allowable URL and form names on the one hand and allowable tal:define variables on the other is inconvenient, to say the least. Questions: - Is there another way of doing this simply (more simply that populating the REQUEST directly with a python expression or script)? - Should the restrictions on tal:define variable names be relaxed? authenticated_user in Z SQL method not defined

Hi, I'm using the exUserFolder together with a PostgreSQL-db to log in users. Works so far. With <dtml-var "AUTHENTICATED_USER.getUserName()"> I get the username which is the same as the field "username" in the db users. But I can not use AUTHENTICATED_USER in an sql-querry like SELECT foo FROM users WHERE username=<dtml-var "AUTHENTICATED_USER.getUserName()" sql_quote>; Why is AUTHENTICATED_USER not availabel in Z SQL methods? dtml-calendar error on Zope 2.6.2

Zope instanse falls asleep :-(

Hello, I have a big problem with a customers Zope instanse - almost every day it "falls asleep": When you try to access their site it's like no requests get's to the site. I try to stop the instance - and when I start it again I'm told that another process has already locked the database file. Running $ps -ax reveals that their is some stale python processes mathing the PID of the recently stopped Zope instanse ... The setup is: Debian 3.0 Zope 2.6.1 CMF 1.3 And some other CMF products. We have a similiar setup running on another machine that doesn't have these problems. zope and apache problem

Hi we currently host umpteen sites and occassionally we need to create a virtual host for them. Previously this appeared to work ok however for certain sites an error now appears Site Error An error was encountered while publishing this resource. slow python scripts

I have a few python scripts that are parsing 4000+ record CSV files, and they are DOG slow. They take over 140 seconds to complete (that's an eternity to wait for a web page to load). What's driving me nuts is that the same code, in a straight python file, fires off and completes in under 2 seconds using the same CSV file. How can I speed up the Python script on my server? Are external methods faster? TIA Rick

serious memory leak?

Hi all, I've got a Zope instance that uses a custom product to store a couple MB of data. When the object is created, it loads up a bunch of data from the filesystem and pretty much just stores it statically. Creating an instance of this object appears to cause no major drag on Zope... while dormant, this zope instance uses 0.1 of available memory. Making a request against the object briefly spikes usage to ~3%. Over the course of 2-3 days, however this zope instance grows to consume > 90% of available memory which is obviously a problem. This is on a server with 2 GB of RAM running little besides zope and apache. Restarting this zope instance successfully re-sets memory usage. Several other long-running zope instances on this box don't seem to be having any trouble at all. I'm guessing this is somehow my fault, but I'm having trouble reproducing the problem so it's tough to say what's going wrong. Can anyone suggest what kinds of things I should be taking a closer look at in order to track this down? If it matters, I'm using 2.6.1 on Gentoo, keeping the ZODB well-packed (~3 MB) and I'm using FileStorage. I'm not using TALES. Thanks in advance, Dylan

trouble uninstalling placeless translation service

howdy. i'm running zope 2.6.1 with ZEO. i attempted to install PlacelessTranslationService for use in a plone/CMF site, and then gave up after deciding that it was too painful to get PlacelessTranslationService working with 2.6.1. However, even after removing the Product, i still see the placeless translation service tool (broken, of course) in my control panel with the title: "This object from the PlacelessTranslationService product is broken!" and, when i restart zope i see the following in the debug.log: 2003-10-14T11:28:39 PROBLEM(100) ZODB Could not import class 'PlacelessTranslationService' from module 'Products.PlacelessTranslationService.\ PlacelessTranslationService' i have some reason to believe that this left over, broken PTS is interfering with some other work i am trying to do. how can i clean up this broken installation? there's no way that i can see to delete the tool from the control panel. i'm pretty sure that the control panel is the only place that PTS exists. if i grep for PTS in InstanceHome, only Data.fs matches... thanks! -- russell uman viz llc web and database programmer

WTF is a monkeypatch?

I am trying to resolve some Oracle issues with ZopeProfiler, but it's a "monkey patch" with no instructions on installing it. I've searched this mailing list and the zope.org website high and low for instructions on installing a "monkey patch," but I'll be damned if I can find them. Can someone offer assistance?
