Managing networked projects / Outsourcing work

Hi ya all, I would like to open discussion and collect some thoughts - and why not even best practices - on how people have and are managing Zope-projects that are too big for their companies or go momentarily over their capacity. Like we all know, outsourcing or hiring a contractor is not as straight forward as some people might think. Even with a well written specification - during the production issues might be raised that need elaboration and tightly knit co-opration between the customer and people who do the work. It is no wonder that user centric design and extreme programming ( usecases, usecases, usecases ) have become popular methodologies within Zope development. Distributed development has worked very well, though I'd say that is more thanks to certain individuals who are champions of a certain product or idea and make sure that those issues will be solved - rather than a development style or methodology. The facts that Zope and Plone evolve very fast are possibly issues that limit the amount how much people can and are willing to outsource. Since there are no designpatterns and well known metrics by which to measure developer's work for an non specialist it could be next to impossible to judge the quality of work during the project. Results can naturally be judged by the fact whether software works and meets the requirements. Also because of the nature of development I believe that for a lot of people/companies/organisations doing it by themselves and figuring out problems on their own is essential part of learning the system and becoming also better developers, adding more value to their own intellectual capital. If you would like to extend the framework - you most likely would like to get your new tools included into the framework core and share the future development costs with others. However this adds a new layer of complexity to the project management, since now the requirements are not solely your requirements but suddenly there are others who contribute their thoughs and want to change things. Naturally you could just release the readymade code - but that would not guarantee that anyone would take it and use it - or want to contribute back to it. So - when would I outsource or use contractors? If possible, I would only outsource clear bits of the whole product - something that requires as little as possible continuous communication and co-operation with other teams during the development. Optimal would be that each outsourced bit could be developed as their own separate projects / processes. If we would be talking about doing something that either party hasn't done before - I would definitely require someone from the contractor to join the onsite team if economicly feasible. Same would go if for example the reponsibility of creating an architecture would lay on the shoulders of the contractor. Reasons for onsite work are mainly for transferring ic from contractor to the onsite team, so that the work a contractor does would not create automatic lock in to just that contractor. How to do the work? If possible, a shared coding standard or a sort of concensus would be great. In any case a shared code repository and code review throughout the project would be a must. Tracker to manage bugs and other issues, including changes to requirements - and documentation written during the work, for example to a wiki. Regular meetings online or offline. Irc is good, but it is much better to have voice discussions and shared whiteboard / workspace. Clear metrics by which the project will be judged and payments paid. How others have done it? Using Zope to manage and serve large files

Often when my customers have got used to Zope and especially Plone as the UI to manage their website, questions go to using Zope and Plone for document management in intranet. It is old story that we all know how Zope sucks while serving large files compared to Apache. Serving large files from filesystem with Apache however takes out the whole point of using Zope - security mechanism etc. Has anyone achieved to combine Zope and Apache/php to serve and manage large files in a way that allows metadata and security of the files to be managed in Zope, but actual serving happens from Apache so that ZServer does not hog memory and processor. I thought about the possibility to integrate Apache/php and Zope via a database and tokens that are passed from Zope to Apache. The scenario could be following. 1) Apache and Zope are serving data from the same domain. Zope could be www.myfoobar.com and Apache could serve download.myfoobar.com 2) within the portal I would have a portal_external_storage_tool that defines the configuration and methods for storing and serving data outside Zope, including the database that is shared 3) Content types are own content types based on Archetypes and include logic for handing over the download to Apache 4) When user within the portal wants to download a file, the view / download function of the content type ( that is protected with Zope security machinery ) writes into the databse a token based on user, time, file or so. 5) User is transparently directed to the application in the download host to download the file. Token would be passed within the url 6) Download application checks that the token is valid for that file and that time - and starts serving data to the client. Has anyone done anything similar - or do you have other ideas on how to implement such? -huima

Integrating IIS and Plone -- everything works ... except images!

Hey all, I followed this document "Connecting IIS to Zope" http://www.zope.org/Members/hiperlogica/ASP404 <http://www.zope.org/Members/hiperlogica/ASP404> successfully. - I did have to place the Virtual Host Monster in /Plone instead of at the root. - Beta 2 worked, 1 didn't. But, none of my images stored in ZODB are getting resolved. Navigation works, pages work, database stuff ok, just not images??? any ideas? many thanks! To case #2, I have experienced this. Zope just stops responding. It's not using any more resources than usual or anything, just stops responding. The issue with the processes, I think, is that possibly the master process or thread restarts itself, but the PID file doesn't get overwritten. So you now have a Zope running with a different PID than what is in the file. As such, running the "stop" script doesn't help. You have to issue a SIGKILL in order to shut it down (When I experience these symptoms, I've tried other signals without success). I am running 2.6.1 with Python 2.1.3. So far as I can tell server load is perfectly normal when this occurs, and it doesn't seem related to uptime.this week it happened twice in one day, but hadn't happened for a couple of weeks before that. In my case though I'm using Apache as a proxy, and Apache seems to lock up as well: it no longer spawns children for new requests. I've also seen it happen where apache's slots all fill up and then everything stops responding. In my case, I'm suspecting a nasty Coldfusion MX setup on the same box that I think has a race condition that takes up 100% CPU every once in a while. Had to track down though. But a race condition on a process would definitely show the types of symptoms describe here. Either way, I'd still like to hear comments/ides/solutions on this issue, just in case I'm following the wrong lead! If I restart the server the same thing happens. I also tried starting the server with these options -a ipaddress -Z1 -t 10 -f - -w - . After the page hangs it won't load(server?) the index page any more or any other page. My browser just sits there doing nothing until it times out with 'document contained not data' Case two After I start my server (different server then case 1) everything is fine and dandy for some time. I can create object, test objects and do normal zope stuff. At some point thought the server hangs, meaning any page I visit refuses to load and eventualy times out. At this point I can't even reload the page for objects that I am currently working on. The only thing that I remedies this is to restart zope. Another thing that I have observed is that generaly speaking when the server gets to this stage, if I press ctrl+c to kill the server (in the window where it shows that it is running) It doesn't actualy kill the server. I don't get the messages: 2003-10-31T00:50:45 INFO(0) Z2 Closing all open ZODB databases ------ 2003-10-31T00:50:45 INFO(0) Z2 Shutting down It just dies silently. But if I run ps aux | grep Zope it shows a Zope process running. Mixing keys

I am new to ZOPE, so maybe this question is too simple: I would like to use a BTRee (OOBTree) to store information. For one type of sub-branch, I would like to use a continuous series of integers as keys: dbroot['SE_HMI']={ '2003' : { 'jrl' : { 0 : <a tuple of data>}} dbroot['SE_HMI']={ '2003' : { 'jrl' : { 1 : <a tuple of data>}} dbroot['SE_HMI']={ '2003' : { 'jrl' : { 2 : <a tuple of data>}} ... and so on ... all other branches besides 'jrl' will have string keys. I read in the ZODB,ZEO programming guide (www.zope.org/Wikis/ZODB/guide/) that you should only use objects of a SINGLE type as keys. I could write a generator, that would create strings, by counting from 0 to 255, however, that would destroy the sort order, because 'ABX' would sort before 'X', allthough it would represent a much larger number. Since the frequency of expected accesses will increase with the count (because the later records will be accessed more frequently), I expect that performance would be lower as the keys would end up in an unsorted manner. The same problem occurs with strings representing numbers, due to the sort order: cmp('123','2') , cmp(123,2) , "/" , cmp('ABX','X') (-1, 1, '/', -1) Does anybody have any experience with this problem ?

Hi after to update of apache 1.3.28 to apache 2.0.48, the apache cannot show ZMI neither the zope portal. You can make valid RSS output using DTML, if that is what you mean. Do remember that the DTML tags are instructions to Zope DTML objects to do something specific there; DTML tags have no meaning to RSS processors, only the *result* of the tags after DTML processing.
