Storing documents and metadata (associated XML fragment)
by Lars von Wedel 29 May '02

Hello, I want to store some kind of library of arbitrary files (similar to the file library example in the distribution). Further, I'd like to store an associated XML fragment (metadata) with the document. This XML fragment should be accessible externally, via XML-RPC for example. What is the best way to store such things in Zope? Would I store Metadata in separate files along with the original files? Or should I extend the File with a string member to hold metadata (may be large, though)? Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance, Lars

Eazy product updated
by Max M 29 May '02

New version is 0.0.2 ;-) It is used in production and is stable! Get it here: http://www.zope.org/Members/maxm/HowTo/easyProduct/files/easy_002.zip Contains 1 library module and 2 examples/templates And read more about it here: http://www.zope.org/Members/maxm/HowTo/easyProduct/index_html Biggest change: Products created with the "easy" module is now automatically catalog aware. So that full text searching is possible via Catalog. 1 Bug fixed: I had forgotten to add boolean as legal property type. what is the "mxm Easy product" ======================== It has long bothered me to no end that when I write Python based products that there was a lot of repeat code. Thus violating the DRY pinciple (Don't Repeat Yourself). Also it has been to difficult to get started with a new product, with too many things that had to be just right to get going. So you have had to take one of your old products and do extensive search and replace to get going. Thats a bother. So I have made two simple classes encapsulating my best practices in writing products. They make it REALLY simple to get a product up and running, and have no penalty as such. One class is for making simple products with content. Like articles, user info, Issues, animal info;-) etc. The other class is for making ObjectManagers. They behave like an item, but can contain other objects. So it's folder like. I believe that this kind of functionality should have been built into Zope to begin with, as it would solve the beginner problems for 90% of the people trying to create Python products. Thus flattening the "Z" shaped learning curve. regards Max M

GMT offset
by Ian McMeans 29 May '02

For some odd reason, <b tal:replace="here/bobobase_modification_time"/> returns a string like "2002/05/27 15:44:11.431 GMT-7". Now, this would normally be acceptable, except I'm in GMT -8!! Is there a way I can change that GMT offset? Also, is there a way I can change the bobobase formatting? (ie hh:mm DD/MM/YY GMT). I found documentation for DTML but not for ZPT formatting, and my experiment at using similar style formatting failed =)

Database abstraction layer

Greetz I'm looking for a DAL to use with Python but can't find any. There seems to be adapters for a range of sql servers, but not one which unifies the interfaces; sql syntax varies with each server (fx LIMIT and TOP). \Oliver

by Tony Flanagan 28 May '02

I've been having a problem with the YihawDirectory product for over a week and I seriously need help, going demented!. The problem I am having is that the only way for me to add EventItems is from the machine hosting Zope, when I try to do it from any of the other machines on the network I receive an error "global name 'YihawEventsItem' is not defined". I don't understand how this operation is restricted to the one machine PLEASE can someone point me in the right direction. TIA Tony

Help with IssueTrackerProduct, please
by Uwe Schuerkamp 28 May '02

28 May '02

Hello folks, sorry to forward this request to the list, but mail to the author bounced (the domain peterbe.com doesn't seem to exist any more), so I'll ask for help here... has anyone managed to install the IssueTrackerProduct by Peter Bengtsson? Cheers, uwe ###################################################################### Hi Peter, I just finished installing your IssueTrackerProduct 0.4.1a on Zope 2.5.1 / Python 2.1.3. I followed the instructions to the letter, Importing and adding the Issue Tracker object works, too. However when I click on the "view" tab of my newly created issue tracker instance, I get the following error: "The object at http://145.228.173.99:8080/it/mine/index_html has an empty or missing docstring. Objects must have a docstring to be published." ("it" is where the FSSession and MailHost lives) I'm only a Zope newbie in search of an issue tracker, so this one is a bit over my head. Of course there is no index_html in the Issue tracker object, so maybe that's the problem; however our zip file both tested and unpacked fine, so I guess I have a complete installation. Thanks in advance for your help & bye for now, uwe ###################################################################### -- Uwe Schuerkamp Tel: +49 (0)5241 / 80 10 66, FAX: - / 6 23 38 Uwe.Schuerkamp(a)nionex.net Nionex GmbH, IWN5 (http://www.nionex.de/) GnuPG KeyID: 5887047D Avenwedder Str. 55, 33311 Guetersloh GnuPG Fingerprint: 2E 13 20 22 9A 3F 63 7F 67 6F E9 B1 A8 36 A4 61

system requirements
by Tom Nixon 28 May '02

Hi I need to quote for a fairly big Zope site and I am trying to work out what sort of spec machine I will need for hosting. The brief is for a minimum of 50 concurrent users, rising to a possible 2000. They will be doing a lot of searching on the site, and there will be quite a lot of e-mails sent out by Zope. The site will also use an SQL database - either mySQL or postgreSQL. My current thinking is: - Linux: RedHat? - Zope with ZEO in case it expands beyond one box - Apache - Squid? - 512 MB RAM - 18 GB SCSI with RAID - 1.8 GHZ processor Am I along the right lines? Will Zope coexist nicely with the database on the same box or should they be separate from day one? Cheers Tom
