Re: [Zope-dev] Separate staging and development areas for a product

I took the liberty of moving this thread to zope, as it's probably better suited for that ML ... Ted Skolnick wrote: >My project contains ZSQL methods and external methods, if that is >significant. ZSQL Methods can be kept in different folders for Dev/Prod, but External Methods would require different modules for this, which will get hairy if you have many EM's. I think two machines is best, two Zope's is next (using INSTANCE_HOME), and a naming convention is next (Production_EM.py vs. Development_EM.py). > >I'd like to have a URL that looks like this... >http://myserver/myproj/mymethod without the Control_Panel bit. > To get that, you need to instantiate your product. Within the ZMI, use the "Add .." dropdown menu and create a new instance of the "myproj" method in the Root folder. Then your URL will work.

reading File Objects from Python Scripts and External Methods
by Dennis Allison 15 Apr '02

15 Apr '02

This relates to finding a workaround to my previous problem. I can create File objects with content='text/xml' using essentially the same program I was trying to use to write ParsedXML. The next problem is how to read them, again from an External Method or Python script, as a string. The plan is to convert the XML back into the simple markup to allow for editing. Of course, I discovered that the XML renders to nothing when evaluated using a <dtml-var .. >. :-(

accessing Photo object indirectly via property value
by Rob Lemley 15 Apr '02

15 Apr '02

I want to display an image with the link to a child Photo Folder. The folder has a property "image" which contains the name of the image file to use. This is how I'm doing it now: <dtml-in expr="objectValues('Photo Folder')" sort="id"> <dtml-unless private> <a href="&dtml.url-sequence-item;"> <img src="&dtml.url-sequence-item;/<dtml-var image>/?display=icon" alt="image" /> </a> <a href="&dtml.url-sequence-item;"> <dtml-var id> </a> </dtml-unless> </dtml-in> Is this the recommended way or are there some better ways to do this: "&dtml.url-sequence-item;/<dtml-var image>/?display=icon" Best Regards, Rob _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Zope and IIS (again)
by Igor Leturia 15 Apr '02

15 Apr '02

Hi!! After some time trying the different proposals for my question, I've learned a bit and obtained some conclusions, but now I've got some other doubts. I'll tell briefly what the problem was. I've got a server with Zope and IIS, and each has some services or pages that I want to access from outside. I put each server on a different port (80 and 8080), but I saw that some of the outside clients that try to access to the pages have firewalls that block every port except 80. So I need all communications from the outside to my server to be on port 80. I obtained two possible solutions from this list. Both of them said that I could put Zope and IIS on ports different from 80 (81 and 8080, for example) and then install some sort of proxy server that would attend the requests on port 80, ask to Zope or IIS on their ports and send the response back to the client on port 80. One of the solutions was installing Microsoft Proxy Server and the other was installing Apache an rewrite rules. I tried Microsoft Proxy Server first. It doesn't exist any more, it is now Microsoft ISA Server. I installed and configured it correctly. But this is what happens: The client makes the request in port 80. The request is attended by ISA Server, which sends another request to Zope on port 8080 or to IIS on port 81. When ISA Server obtains the response, it sends it to the client through port 80. All is fine up to now. The problem is both Zope and IIS include '<base href>' tags or absolute URLs with 'www.mydomain.com:8080' or 'www.mydomain.com:81' in the pages, so after that the client requests all the objects in the pages (images, frames, etc.) on ports 8080 and 81, and as they're blocked they are not shown properly. I can fix my Zope pages not to include those tags or absolute URLs, but not the Zope management interface or the IIS pages. So the solution I need is that ISA Server (or whatever software I install as front-end to Zope and IIS) would delete all the ':8080' and ':81's from the pages before serving them to the client, so that the client would do subsequent requests for the images, etc. on the pages again in port 80. Does anyone know how to do this in ISA Server? Or does anyone know if Apache can do it? And any other web proxy server? Thanks in advance, Igor Leturia

Using persistent DBI handle in PerlExternalMethod
by Robin Smidsrød 15 Apr '02

15 Apr '02

If I create a normal Z DBI database connection, is there a way to use this handle to directly get the corresponding DBI $dbh for that connection? I would like to use the persistence of Zope to get rid of connection-penalty, but I need to use the DBI API to be able to make advanced scripts which calls multiple SQL-statements without the need to make Z SQL Methods for each one... I've looked over Zope.pm (zoperl), and taken a small look at the relevant ZDBI_DA files, but the solution isn't obvious. Can I use it something like this? ----------------- cut here ---------------------- package ZopeExt::return_something; use Zope; # dbi_database_connection is defined in the Zope object tree # DBH is the field described in the Zope.pm BEGIN sub. # Is this correct? my $dbh=$Zope::DBH{'dbi_database_connection'}; my $sth=$dbh->prepare('select * from table'); $sth->execute; my @row=$sth->fetchrow; return @row; 1; ---------------- cut here ----------------------- BTW: I sent this to the zope-perl mailinglist, but it doesn't look like there is much activity on that list.

Thanks!! That sounds interesting to me... And how do you avoid Zope giving a 404 error because those objects don't exist in the ZODB? Well, I actually have more than one application, but the simplest is a variable-size image: You want to be able to get at the image at a desired scale, and you may not know what size you want in advance. Furthermore, you may decide in six months you don't like that size, and you don't want to keep it that way, or you may want your users to decide for themselves what size it should be. Consider "avatars" -- usually square, but sizes vary from 50x50 to 100x100 or larger depending on the location. So why not save them at 200x200 or so and then just deliver to order? E.g: http.../myvarimage --> is the original image http.../myvarimage/f32x32 --> is the image scaled to 32x32 pixels It's pretty easy to see that the number of possible URL/images is enormous. Add a few options (preserve aspect fit vertical, preserve aspect fit horizontal, preserve aspect fit within box, fit exact), and it's even larger. Now imagine you have 1000 such images. You can see it would be sort of annoying to resize them all outside of Zope, and port them all back into it, even if you only forsaw changes on the development timescale. Furthermore, who wants to keep track of them all? More complex examples would include images composed of multiple images or dataplots. I probably will have some of those in my application, too, so why not use the same approach for those? Why use a new URL? Because then it will get cached automatically by the browser and any intervening caches. As I said, I do have a working version, and it's very convenient. However, it's badly designed technically -- it uses a single "resized_image" buffer which I now realize is static and so not thread-safe. If you hit it for simultaneous requests of the same image at different sizes (as would happen on a sampler page in my testing configuration, or about 1 zillion times a day in a production environment with real users), Zope logs a "write conflict" error, the hard drive starts thrashing and Zope never recovers. Eventually the server would crash, I think. Or Zope would. I usually restart Zope first. I definitely need a better implementation! :-( > So, I'm wondering if (via Zope's API, as this is a Python-based > > product), there's a way to mark an object as not undoable -- > > i.e. when it gets deleted, it's really gone. > > Well, if your objects don't inherit from something which is > persistent, they won't get stored in the ZODB at all, > AFAIK. They'll simply exist in memory until > deleted or until zope restarts, whichever comes first. Hmm. I only really expect them to last a few minutes, the question is just whether Zope will be able to find them at all. (Also how to avoid using persistent! -- I assume ObjectManager does, I guess it would mean rewriting a lot of code as I don't think there's such a thing as anti-inheriting (keyword "disown"? there's a suggestion for the next version of Python! :D ) > But I haven't really looked into it closely. Well, maybe I can make it work. Thanks for the idea.
