Zope server cant bind port 80
by Stanislav Marszalek 13 Mar '02

Hi, When starting Zope server on port 80 under user "zope", sever fails with message "fail to bind port 80 - dont have permissions." When running under user "root", it is ok. When trying start zope server on port 8080, everything is ok. So just cant run on port 80 because of permissions but why? Have anyone similar experience? Zope server 2.5.1b1 FreeBSD 4.4 Thanks, David Marko

Datefields (problem with ZPsycopg and "/"s in dates)

[ Tim -- Email to you bounces--might want to check your address. ] Not seeing the problem. Here's a small test case to make sure this isn't a version difference between us. Can you see if this works? # In psql: CREATE TABLE datetest(id SERIAL PRIMARY KEY, thedate timestamp); [using date rather than timestamp works fine, too] INSERT INTO datetest (thedate) VALUES ('2001-04-01'); # ZSQL Statement "select" # no arguments or parameters SELECT id, thedate FROM datetest # Pyscript "pyscript" # one parameter: "thedate" m = thedate.Month() return "%s is the cruellest month" % m # dtml method "dtml" <dtml-var standard_html_header> <dtml-in select> <dtml-var "pyscript(thedate)"> </dtml-in> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> View "dtml" and I get "April is the cruellest month" If this works, can you send me a .zexp of your ZSQLMethod, Python Script, and DTML Method, plus SQL DDL to create a table like yours? One small idea: it's possible that "client" is a meaningful word to Zope. Might want to change the parameter & dtml-sqlvar to "theclient" or somesuch and see what happens. > > Don't understand the question about an if block? Normally, dtml-raise would be used to raise an error manually if something bad happens, so, yes, it would often be used with dtml-if. However, you can use it yourself for debugging purposes, and it's quite useful like this.

Hi guys, wasn't aware anyone was listening on this list, judging from the archives :-) Sorry I missed the zope@ thread, I don't subscribe anymore because the traffic level is (used to be?) a recipe for insanity. As Paul hinted at, I'm currently working on revamping the build, installation, and instance management processes for Zope 2.6, based on existing work. I have a vested interest in this because I build the OpenBSD package, which currently installs the software home into $PREFIX/lib/zope and includes a script to build an instance home for you. I want to expand on this. I don't know what your timetables are, but if you're in the process of rethinking this, wait till the weekend is past, I should have something by then. What I do come up with will most likely be able to be used with 2.4 and 2.5. and it'll mean you don't have to do it again for 2.6. :-)

I am not sure if it is the community stalling so much as hitting the peaks and valleys of the development cycle. Besides, the Zope Corp people I am sure that most of us have full time (or at least part time) jobs that are non Zope. I have had mostly-full time Zope jobs and when I was doing that I was more involved in writing tips, how-tos, products, etc. I think Zope documentation (not the Zope product) suffers from the critical mass. There has to be enough people in the pot to be able to both develop and document. Right now, most of us are focusing on developing products, applications, websites and not on documentation. It is also clear that documentation itself does not provide income. If I build out another website in Zope, I can build a community and another revenue source. If I write a how-to, well, I get a gold star in the community (maybe) and it that good open source "warm feeling." So, it comes down to economics. That being said, there are now 3 (maybe 4) books out there on Zope and I can easily remember the day when there was a total of 0. There are more and more products being developed and not just stupid discussion boards :) but real, meaty products that people can make money with. That trend is a good trend. As the economy picks back up, there will be more work for consultants, more consulting and more demand and production of documentation. Do we need more books, websites, help areas, FAQ's, etc? Yes. Will they come? Yes. I have at least two of those in (not telling which ones) in the works. But time is money and money is the key. BZ

Put it in the ZSQL Method; that way we can see *exactly* what it gets. Then: * can you test the ZSQLMethod (with the test tab) and have it work? * can you call the ZSQLMethod w/a hand-crafted URL and does it work? Don't understand the question about an if block? What are you talking about?
