Question about SybaseDA
by J. Joy 11 Mar '02

11 Mar '02

Ran into something interesting when using the SybaseDA v2... When I try to store a large amount of text in a text field on a MSSQL database, it saves it all intact. However, when I try and retrieve said data, it seems to truncate somewhere around 4065 characters... I couldn't find any documentation or bug reports on this, anyone have any ideas on how to remedy this sutuation. Jason --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Try FREE Yahoo! FSCounter fills up undo log
by Marcus Schopen 11 Mar '02

11 Mar '02

Hi, I installed FSCounter 1.2 on my Zope 2.3.3 (linux Debian potato). Calling a FSCounter instance via <dtml-var counter> from index_html document fills up the undo log with one entry per request. After a while there are hundrets of these entries in my undo log which lets the data.fs growing up very rapidly. Any ideas? Thanks Marcus

Re: What causes the community to stall so often?
by Tim Owen 10 Mar '02

Been following the "state of documentation" thread and I just have to note the irony about a content management system struggling with content management. I do tend to agree that there is a general lack of coordination, editing, verification/review for all the content, but not a general lack of content. At the same time, I understand the "we're not going to do the search for you so go search Google" and the "read The Zope Book" reaction as well. If increased community participation is desired, then some slack must be given before new folks get the "cold water in the face" routine by the hard core community members. Couple of specific requests/suggestions to add to the mix: 1. How about a glossary of terms that get linked to various HOWTOs, wikis, etc. 2. Include appropriate Python, MySQL, Postgres, etc. documentation cross-references. 3. Develop some kind of structure to the various types of documentation (to provide cross referencing, understanding how current, what version(s) is applies to, etc.). 4. Develop a peer review and reward system (Joel's suggestion extended) that provides recognition which may lead to paid work. 5. Develop an overall structure to the "master" documentation and solicit content owners/maintainers (subject to peer review of course). Books, member areas, etc. can still be used to augment the master documentation. 6. Good examples are key to understanding concepts I think, so require them to post. I think Joel Burton, Jean-Francois Doyon, etc. both have very good points on how to go about improving the situation. I would be willing to volunteer some time to help search, review, catalog, comment on, etc. from a novice perspective. It would also be nice to see a dedicated (at least part-time) resource from ZC to keep us honest as well. Anyone out there a professional information architect to help get us moving in the right direction (see http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1565922824/ref=ase_louisrosenfel-20/1 04-8373055-5213557 for a good book on the subject - disclaimer: I know Lou Rosenfeld)? As for the related issue on difficulty installing, building, configuring, etc. on various platforms, I would suggest separating this from the documentation topic (although it should be well documented too). Easy DTML way for layout.
by Jordan Katz 10 Mar '02

Hello, I ran into a problem with Zope. I'd like to use it to create a consistent layout for a midsize webpage. The layout is very simple; I'd like Zope to insert the same header, body and footer for all pages with minor color differences that can be handled by CSS. The header will contain a tool bar--for example, a simple table with links in it. Then my standard_html_footer or whatever I choose my DTML footer tag to be will look like this: <dtml-var css-code> <dtml-var toolbar-code> This is where I have a difficulty; what if I want my toolbar to have a minor difference from every page? For example, what if when page 1 is visited, I'd like the page 1 link to be in bold? I could make a ton of different dtml-vars for each part of the toolbar but that would take a ridiculous amount of time, if it works at all, and defeat the whole purpose of using Zope for the easier layout. I'm sure there's a "standard" solution to this--how can I achieve such easy consistent layout in Zope? Thanks a lot, -- Jordan Katz <katz(a)underlevel.net> | Mind the gap

Re: R: [Zope] CookieCrumbler logout problems

Alex Cordero writes: Please stay on the mailing list (readded). > ... CookieCrumbler unable to log out ... > How can I know what kind of authentication am I using? DTML method > logged_out simply conrtrols if the curren user is Anonymous User by the call When you request a logout CookieCrumber expires the authentication cookie and redirects to "logged_out". When you have been authenticated via the cookie (alone), then you will be "Anonymous User" when "logged_out" is visited. However, when your browser provides basic authentication information, then you are still authenticated by this information and "logged_out" sees that the user name is still not "Anonymous User". Therefore, it tells you that you are still authenticated and not yet logged out. > ... > If, so, How can I say to CookieCrumbler that I want to use real cookie > authentication? Usually (this means in the default setup), CookieCrumber will only use cookie authentication (and then is able to log you out). However, when you are authenticated by another user folder, e.g. one above that for CookieCrumber, then your browser may have gotten an "Unauthorized" response and has shown you a login dialog. Your browser can (and usually will) send this login information with any request to the Zope site. When it does, CookieCrumber is no longer able to log you out. An "Unauthorized" response is also send to the browser in some exceptional error situations. You get a browser login dialog and when you successfully provide login information, then you are authenticated with HTTP authentication and CookieCrumbler can no longer log you out. This is probably a bug. But it occurs only rarely and is probably not your problem. Some browsers allow you to save login information accross sessions. Such browsers may automatically authenticate you without being asked for it. In these cases, you are authenticated via HTTP authentication and CookieCrumber cannot log you out. Dieter

Using DTML or Python in ZClass Properties?
by Dan Shafer 09 Mar '02

09 Mar '02

I have a ZClass with a property that is a date. I would like that property's value to contain the current date as a default, subject to user override. In the ZClass Property Sheet editor, I can't seem to get a DTML expression to work. Maybe I'm formatting it wrong, but I keep getting an invalid date string kind of answer. One document I read suggested that I could put the date into the object's constructor method by calling manage_editProperties, but it made a reference to "if you add fields for properties to the HTML form on the management screen" and that was just imprecise enough that it eludes me. Any ideas?

Re: So what will we do? (was [Zope] What causes the community to stall so often?
by Jon Edwards 09 Mar '02

Thanks to Seb for starting a useful thread (and to Joel for trying valiantly to keep it on-track! ;-) A few thoughts, in no particular order - 1. A quick-n-dirty way to improve documentation might be to adopt the FAQ system from the CMF Dogbowl - http://cmf.zope.org/doc/FAQ/ - after Tres setup the basics, it took me a couple of hours to add them all, cos basically they're mostly just links to relevant maillist-archives, how-to's, and Zopelab entries. ...as many have said, the documentation is usually out there somewhere, no need to re-invent the wheel. But it's often hard to find when you're not quite sure what you're looking for. (Of course, CMF is a much smaller topic than "Zope", but you could split things into manageable topics and divide the workload) 2. If you've done some research/problem-solving in a particular subject, but don't have time to do a full How-To, why not just post a list of the useful links you found on your Member pages? I started doing this with Windows-related stuff - http://cmf.zope.org/Members/joned/winstuff - updates welcomed. (Not trying to blow my own trumpet here, just examples of ways a lazy/busy person can contribute without writing lots of docs :-) 3. When people answer a mailing-list question with "It's in the archives", it's much more helpful if you also give a few clues (like "It was posted last month", "by Joe Bloggs" or "try keywords x and y") - yes, everyone should "do a Google" before posting questions, but often you're not quite sure what you're looking for! 4. The ZMI Help pages are wonderful (and, I suspect, very underused). My only suggestion would be to include more, short, syntax examples to help dummies like me understand some of the API references more easily. <tongue-in-cheek> 5. Windows users are not your enemies! ;-) We're struggling valiantly to introduce the wonders of open-source into the "belly of the beast" (MS-dominated organisations/markets). We're on the frontline of the battle to diminish the global dominance of Microsoft - stop shooting us in the back, and start passing us more ammunition instead! </tongue-in-cheek> Huge thanks to ZC for the Windows installer, which makes it a 5 minute job to setup a new system. But in other areas, Windows-users are made to feel like "second-class citizens", or gatecrashers at the open-source party! Hope that's helpful Cheers, Jon
