Class definition problem in a Python Script
by complaw＠hal-pc.org 07 Dec '01

I'm using a method to look up an object within a folder and returning that object. In some cases, however, the object isn't found. In all cases, I want to return an object as I do some checking to ensure that the object was indeed found. Unfortunately, my mechanism for doing so is giving me a "SyntaxError, Names starting with "_" are not allowed (__doc__)." Here is the code... def get_object_by_element_number(objList, given_element_number): class MyErrorClass: "Dummy class so something is returned (with an error indicator)" element_number = -1 found = 0 for obj in objList: if given_element_number = obj.element_number: found = 1 return obj if found == 0: error_obj = MyErrorClass return error_obj ------- Does anyone know what the problem is? At first, I thought it was a docstring problem, but I pulled the example out of the Python Tutorial (from python.org) Any hints? Thanks in advance, Ron

I looked at bindings on the 2-3-1 site. The namespace binding value was blank (although '_' was recommended). Could that be the problem? Should it be '_' under 2-4-x? Ron -----Original Message----- From: Chris McDonough [mailto:chrism@zope.com] Sent: Friday, December 07, 2001 3:03 PM To: Ronald.Chichester(a)bakerbotts.com; zope(a)zope.org Subject: Re: [Zope] NameError (global name 'namespace' is not defined) - more diagnos tics and code The PythonScript in question likely does not have its "namespace" helper variable bound to the name "namespace". You can look on the "bindings" tab of the script to see if this is true. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Ronald.Chichester(a)bakerbotts.com> To: <zope(a)zope.org> Sent: Friday, December 07, 2001 3:35 PM Subject: [Zope] NameError (global name 'namespace' is not defined) - more diagnos tics and code > Even more diagnostic information the pecurliar 'namespace' error. > > I loaded Zope 2-4-3 onto my box and loaded in the product and folder (with > info) in their appropriate places. [Fwd: Re: Zope Solution]

Hi! You're right, as Stephan answered to you we used in this project Zope as a pure 'blind' appserver. the protocol we used there is xmlrpc (www.xmlrpc.com) which has bindings for nearly all languages, among these: python,c++,java on client and serverside. xmlrpclib marshalls function calls and basic types (scalars, dicts, lists, datetimes) as xml statements and uses http as transport. Zope has a built-in xmlrpc server. There are also projects for other protocols (SOAP and CORBA) but I think the latter one is in an experimental state. The point I liked so much about xmlrpc was that is very uncomplicated to implement. As I can read from your explanation it should be well possible to implement that with Zope. Please let me know when you need more information, perhaps you can then provide me more details about your project . regards phil Am Don, 2001-12-06 um 13.59 schrieb Geir Arne Evjen: > I posted this message in Zope's miling list. NameError (global name 'namespace' is not defined) - more diagnos tics and code
by Ronald.Chichester＠bakerbotts.com 07 Dec '01

Even more diagnostic information the pecurliar 'namespace' error. I loaded Zope 2-4-3 onto my box and loaded in the product and folder (with info) in their appropriate places. Then I loaded the python scripts into the editor and pressed the "Save Changes" button do recompile. It didn't help. Same problem. NameError: global name 'namespace' is not defined. I'm wondering if my technique for getting information from an object isn't frought with peril. Is there a technique where I could return a particular object from a list of objects? Getting an actual object is easy to do. However, the problem comes when the search is unsuccessful. What do you return? The below code is what I developed to remedy that problem. The problem with the remedy is that it doesn't work in Zope 2-4-3 (although it did in 2-3-1). Note, the DTML code from which the python script is called used the contents namespace. Here is the original python script code: found = 0 # flag to indicate that the object was/wasn't found... contents = [] # the return list... # Run through the objects in the current (context) folder to see if there is a match (with given_title)... for obj in context.objectValues('Image'): if found == 0: if given_title == obj.title: url = obj.absolute_url title = obj.title contents.append(namespace(url=url, title=title)[0]) found = 1 # Set flag on success... # If you can't find it in the context, then check the container... for obj in container.objectValues('Image'): if found == 0: if given_title == obj.title: url = obj.absolute_url title = obj.title contents.append(namespace(url=url, title=title)[0]) found = 1 # Set flag on success... # Return indicative values if the desired object was not found... if found == 0: contents.append(namespace(url='', title='')[0]) vars = namespace(contents=contents) return vars ----- As the namespace issue wss causing the problem, I tried to get around it by doing the following: found = 0 # flag to indicate that the object was/wasn't found... # Run through the objects in the current (context) folder to see if there is a match (with given_title)... for obj in context.objectValues('Image'): if found == 0: if given_title == obj.title: ret_obj = obj found = 1 # Set flag on success... # If you can't find it in the context, then check the container... for obj in container.objectValues('Image'): if found == 0: if given_title == obj.title: ret_obj = obj found = 1 # Set flag on success... return ret_obj ### ... which works just fine _IF_ you find the object. If not, the DTML code is still going to look for a property and not find one (because nothing is returned). To fix that, I added a "dummy" object for errors, to wit: class myErrorClass: element_number = -1 ... was tacked on at the beginning of the script, and ... if found == 0: an_Error = myErrorClass() return an_Error else: return ret_obj ... was tacked on at the end. Unfortunately, when you run into a condition where no legitimate object was found (i.e., found == 0), you get a screwy response from Zope. The username/password challenge comes up (even if you are in the manage session as the manager). No username/password combination exists to get through that. In short, something about instantiating the class screwed up Zope. What does one do in such a situation? Thank you all in advance. I thought of a special kind of folderish object, that > allows a mass upload (of course), but more important some kind of > image management (keyword search, automatic thumbnail creation, > etc.). But this would also require a special image class. I found > the "Photo Product" on zope.org, but this was not exactly what I > was looking for. Well, I just want to address the upload issues. What you do with the uploads, inserting into a new 'meta-type', etc, is outside the requirement. I have several scenarios. 1. user has to upload several specific images thru a form and hit upload once. example: image1 [ ] [BROWSE] image2 [ ] [BROWSE] image3 [ ] [BROWSE] image4 [ ] [BROWSE] [UPLOAD ALL] The script can then rename all the images to be used appropriately in Zope. I currently have this in a ZClass, but they have to hit submit for each image. I dont want them to upload any images, unless they upload them all. 2. Upload mass images to folder Allow a user to go to a local directory and multi-select images to upload. Using [CTRL]-select or [SHIFT]-select would be ideal. Drag and Drop TTW would be "Heavenly" Ideal. So some Java may be required. Can your FTP solution do this? Cheers, -Trevor

RE: [Zope] MailHost problems

I had the exact same problem with Zope on NT. No matter what I did, I couldn't get Zope to play nice with the SMTP server that comes with IIS 4.0. Eventually I installed another SMTP server, and MAILHOST worked like a charm. If your site isn't incredibly high traffic, Hermes (http://www.alixoft.com/software/hermes.htm) works well, and is free. You'll want to install it as a service, you can find instructions for doing so here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q137890. Another option is to migrate to Win2000/IIS 5.0. The IIS 5.0s SMTP server works with MAILHOST. > -----Original Message----- > From: zope-admin(a)zope.org [mailto:zope-admin@zope.org]On > Behalf Of Tony > Flanagan > Sent: Friday, December 07, 2001 7:18 AM > To: zope > Subject: [Zope] MailHost problems > > > hi all, > I am currently using the MailHost product in zope to > send automatic > e-mails from my Zope site, via the companies e-mail server. > This was working > perfectly on my own machine(Win 98), but when the site was > moved onto an NT > server I've started getting the following error, without a traceback.. > > Error Type: SMTPHeloError > Error Value: (501, 'Invalid domain name') > > Does anybody know what causes this. Which product is used for www.zope.org? CMF? I never had a detailed look on CMF by now, that's why I ask. I need some kind of document management system (main requirements: WebDav access, indexing MS Office and PDF documents). Are there any products available? Juergen -- plasser(a)hexagon.at
