Maarten, use apache/mod_rewrite as a front-end is the easiest way to do this (of course, this rather assumes you are on *nix...) here's a few pointers to start you off: http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zope/2001-August/096782.html http://www.zope.org/Members/unfo/apache_zserver_ssl http://www.zope.org/Members/mwr/VHosts_With_Zope_Default http://www.zope.org/Members/fritz/howto_apache_and_siteroot cheers, garry On 5 Dec 2001, at 12:02, Demont Maarten wrote: Subject: RE: [Zope] Zserver-port question Date sent: Wed, 5 Dec 2001 12:02:14 +0100 From: "Demont Maarten" <Maarten.Demont(a)cronos.be> To: <gs(a)styrax.com> > What I'm actually trying to do is keep the management-interface on > 8080, but have my first website on another port like 8081 > > Maarten > > -----Original Message----- > From: Garry Steedman [mailto:gs@styrax.com] > Sent: woensdag, december 05, 2001 11:35 > To: Demont Maarten > Subject: Re: [Zope] Zserver-port question > > your mail is unclear: are you trying to run one zope instance on two > HTTP ports simultaneously? if so, you cant do this AFAIK with zope > alone, but you could probably do it using apache/mod_rewrite... there > are howto's which should be helpful... > > cheers, > > garry > > On 5 Dec 2001, at 10:31, Demont Maarten wrote: > > Priority: Urgent > From: "Demont Maarten" <Maarten.Demont(a)cronos.be> > To: <zope(a)zope.org> > Subject: [Zope] Zserver-port question > Date sent: Wed, 5 Dec 2001 10:31:13 +0100 > > > Hi > > > > I want to run a folder (or even multiple folders) in zope (e.g. > > /website) as a new port > > > > so instead of using http://localhost:8080/website -> > > http://localhost:8081 > > > > > > Is it possible? Acquisition and Error Handling Questions
by Tim Owen 05 Dec '01

05 Dec '01

Sorry for this trivial post - and let me know if this is the wrong list to post to, but I am struggling with acquisition (guess that makes me a newbie) and error handling in Zope. I have read the Zope Book, the Zope Web Application Construction book, and the online Developer's Guide. The examples do not seem to help. I want to organize my pages like: main folder/ subfolder 1/ sub-subfolder 1/ sub-subfolder 2/ subfolder 2/ sub-subfolder 3/ sub-subfolder 4/ subfolder 3/ I want to put common methods and scripts in one place (subfolder 1) and content in another (subfolder 2) and media resources like images in another (subfolder 3). Question Part 1: I want to set a cookie in a DTML method in sub-subfolder 3 and use it in a DTML document in sub-subfolder 4. Looks like the cookie is not visible by the DTML document. How do I make the cookie visible? Question Part 2: When trying to call Z SQL Methods or Python Scripts in a sub-subfolder 4 from sub-subfolder 3 I get syntax errors. How do I do that? Tried the following >From sub-subfolder 3 I call <dtml-if expr="../sub-subfolder 4/function(parm)='_['variable']'"> etc... Question Part 3: I tried to split apart content in the reusable DTML documents, but in lower level folders Zope keeps appending folders to the URL and it keeps growing. Finds the documents in the hierarchy, but keeps adding to the URL length. How do I avoid this and still reference documents in parallel folders? Question Part 4: I am not sure the best way to deal with error messages. In scripts I can test conditions, but I am not sure how to pass the errors and messages back to the calling DTML method or document for presentation. <RANT> All of the books assume no errors and are vacuous on techniques like this that generally make up the bulk of a real application. </RANT> For example: I have a general validation script that I want to control the error handling function. It calls several reusable scripts for validating specific kinds of rules (like format, required fields, uniqueness, etc...). How do I structure this so that I can reuse code, access it properly, present the user with error messages. Thanks. ___________________ Tim Owen Cell: 517.285.7071 Home: 989.224.4905 eFax: 425.940.5905

importing XLS files into ZODB or RDBMS
by Trevor Toenjes 05 Dec '01

05 Dec '01

I was hoping to find a product that imports Excel spreadsheets into Zope as data. And creates a container in ZODB or creates a table in Postgres(RDBMS). I would settle for importing a CSV. I searched zope.org, but cant find anything but flaky discussions and proposals. Does anything do this? The first line of the XLS or CSV names the columns. TIA, Trevor

newbie...
by Maneesh Yadav 05 Dec '01

Disclaimer: I think it took me a year to realize what Zope actually is....maybe I still don't know :) Sorry to bother you all, but the Zope environment is so rich with options I'm not sure which path I should take. I am doing a web page for my lab and I have Zope up and running fine and I think I understand most of the basics....now I need to make a web page that I'd like to do a couple of things, keep a little profile of each person in the lab, have a little web interface for POs (just a form with some fields that writes stuff to a database so everyone can see what items have been ordered) and an overview of research. It's not really dynamic content, but I'd like to use Zope for the ordering system and to ease design. I was going to make a bunch of METAL macros but I *think* it'd be smarter to store things like personell profile in a database and have a web page that just prints out the contents and the same kinda thing for lab POs (purchase orders)... Would someone mind giving me a general layout for connectivity between everything? I know Zope has ZopeDB but it is unclear to me as to how to actually make data entries and define a database...or do I have to make my database in postgresql and connect to the database over zope? So I know I should use metal for general site layout (nav bars and the like), but how can I arrange my two underlying databases and what do I use in Zope to connect to them and present the results of the SQL queries? Would it be easy to have a tree like nav bar on the side (like Zope?), what component does the 'tree' code fit under? No need to xplain in too much detail, jbasically just what tool I need to do what and I am sure I can follow one of the tutorials... Many Thanks, Maneesh Thanks, Maneesh

Hi I want to run a folder (or even multiple folders) in zope (e.g. /website) as a new port so instead of using http://localhost:8080/website -> http://localhost:8081 Is it possible? And if it is possible, how do I do it? Tnx Maarten Demont

Squishdot moderation question
by Richard Hewison 05 Dec '01

05 Dec '01

We've been playing around with Squishdot for a short while, and we never see anything appear in the 'moderation' area. We can review all messages under the 'Postings' tab, but that's what we thought 'moderation' was supposed to be about!? The Squishdot site we've set up is configured so that articles and comments are both moderated, but 'moderation' is always empty. What is the difference between 'Postings' and 'Moderation'?

constructors and destructors
by Roman Bogoyev 05 Dec '01

05 Dec '01

Hello, I'm a zope newbie so please excuse me if this is obvious: If I make a ZClass, then an instance of it can be made by using the 'add' pull down menu of the management interface. This in turn calls an 'add_myobject' method in which I may do anything, including creating an entry in a database. OK. Now if I wish to use the zope management interface to delete my object ie: one of the 'cut' or 'delete' buttons, how do I call a 'destructor' method to get rid of my database entry associated with that object? Or am I missing the point completely and should be doing this another way?? Thanks for any responses. RE: [Zope] Getting Zope to act as if it is in a different domain?
by Etienne Labuschagne 05 Dec '01

05 Dec '01

Hi there, Thanks for the reply. The product I am developing is a "plug in" product that anyone can use in their web-sites (the product is served by my Zope, and the product must communicate with my Zope). This means that whatever setup needs to be done on IIS will have to be done on every client's IIS that wants to use my plug-in (it's not even to say that they ARE going to use IIS). When you say Zope's virual hosting, do you mean using SiteRoot and SiteAccess? This seems to me like a fairly unsurmountable problem! Regards Etienne -----Original Message----- From: Evan Simpson [mailto:evan@4-am.com] Sent: Tuesday, December 04, 2001 6:13 PM To: Etienne Labuschagne Cc: Zope User List (E-mail) Subject: Re: [Zope] Getting Zope to act as if it is in a different domain? (I know how > to get A's domain from HTTP_REFERER, but does not know how to set the > headers/whatever). If you can figure out how to make IIS proxy these requests, (or put a rewriting proxy in front of IIS) you can use Zope's virtual hosting capabilites to make the Zope applet appear part of IIS's domain. Cheers, Evan @ Zope
