Zope on Mac OS X -- startup exception
by Chris Africa 04 Dec '01

04 Dec '01

I just installed Zope 2.4.3 (python 2.1) on Macintosh OS X Server (10.1.1). The install went okay, but I can't start up the server. The error log shows this error: ------ 2001-12-03T15:38:11 PANIC(300) z2 Startup exception Traceback (innermost last): File z2s.py, line 861, in ? IOError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/Applications/Zope/var/Z2.pid' ------ 2001-12-03T15:38:11 PROBLEM(100) zdaemon zdaemon: Mon Dec 3 10:38:11 2001: The kid, 25215, died on me. Another Zope user gave me this piece of advice: "The problem looks like you installed the package as a different user to the one you're trying to run it as." I installed as cafrica and logged in to my machine as cafrica, but the passwords are different. Could that be the problem? If so, how do I fix it? -- Chris Africa University of Michigan College of Engineering Department of Mechanical Engineering Webmaster/Coordinator, Information Services 734.764.8482

sendmail in standard_error_message
by Arian de Wit 04 Dec '01

04 Dec '01

Hi All, When I add a dtml-sendmail block to my standard_error_message, I no longer get the custom error page at all, but the built-in one (headed up "Site Error." I read in the archives that this can be due to the standard_error_message object itself raising an error, but I have put the code in another object and it works fine there. Any idea what I've done wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated. The code in question is included below. Thanks a lot, Arian Here's the code for the standard_error_message object I'm using, which tests for a NotFound error to treat 404 errors differently. If the sendmail block is removed, it works fine. The mailhost object *does* exist -- the sendmail block works perfectly when used elsewhere. <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html40/strict.dtd"> <html> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"> <title> <dtml-if "error_type=='NotFound'"> Page Not Found - NIWA <dtml-else> Website Error - NIWA </dtml-if> </title> <dtml-var style> </head> <body class="paddedminimal"> <img id="mainlogo" src="/niwalogo300.jpg" alt="NIWA" width="300" height="51"> <dtml-if "error_type=='NotFound'"> <h1>Page Not Found</h1> <p>Sorry – the page requested couldn’t be found.</p> <dtml-sendmail mailhost="mailhost"> To: a.dewit(a)niwa.co.nz From: web(a)niwa.co.nz Subject: 404 Error URL: <dtml-var SERVER_URL><dtml-var PATH_INFO><dtml-if QUERY_STRING>?<dtml-var QUERY_STRING></dtml-if> Referrer: <dtml-var HTTP_REFERER> </dtml-sendmail> URL: <dtml-var SERVER_URL><dtml-var PATH_INFO><dtml-if QUERY_STRING>?<dtml-var QUERY_STRING></dtml-if> Referrer: <dtml-var HTTP_REFERER> <dtml-else> <h1>Website Error</h1> <p>Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource.</p> <p> <strong>Error Type: <dtml-var error_type></strong><br> <strong>Error Value: <dtml-var error_value></strong><br> </p> <hr> <p>Troubleshooting Suggestions</p> <ul> <li>The URL may be incorrect. Live track with Paul Everitt at Net4Any Paris available in MP3
by Jerome Alet 04 Dec '01

04 Dec '01

Hi, I'm pleased to announce that large bits of Net4Any's meeting with Paul Everitt on November 23 in Paris are now available in MP3 format. For the Eurozopers here who have already received a similar message some days ago, I must say that the two first parts that were missing are now available along with the rest. These two parts are Paul's introduction. Net4Any organized this event, and many european Zope developpers came there to discuss with Paul about the future of Zope and their own products. Unfortunately, because of different technical problems there are several files instead of a single one, and some parts are missing. However you should be able to listen to something like 3 hours of discussion, jokes (even private ones ;-), explanations, etc... Because of lack of time I've not edited any of these files in any way, so you can hear at some preliminary tests at the beginning... The Nice-Sophia Antipolis University, and particularly its Medicine School, are pleased to host these files on their server for some time. You can listen to them using any web browser with an MP3 plugin (RealPlayer, xmms, mpg123, FreeAmp, WinAmp, iTunes, etc...), at : http://stream.unice.fr:8000/playlist.pls?mount=/file/zope/zopeintro-1.mp3&f… http://stream.unice.fr:8000/playlist.pls?mount=/file/zope/zopeintro-2.mp3&f… http://stream.unice.fr:8000/playlist.pls?mount=/file/zope/zope-1.mp3&file=d… http://stream.unice.fr:8000/playlist.pls?mount=/file/zope/zope-2.mp3&file=d… http://stream.unice.fr:8000/playlist.pls?mount=/file/zope/zope-3.mp3&file=d… http://stream.unice.fr:8000/playlist.pls?mount=/file/zope/zope-4.mp3&file=d… Alternatively, you can download them with wget with command lines similar to : wget http://stream.unice.fr:8000/file/zope/zopeintro-1.mp3 wget http://stream.unice.fr:8000/file/zope/zopeintro-2.mp3 wget http://stream.unice.fr:8000/file/zope/zope-1.mp3 wget http://stream.unice.fr:8000/file/zope/zope-2.mp3 wget http://stream.unice.fr:8000/file/zope/zope-3.mp3 wget http://stream.unice.fr:8000/file/zope/zope-4.mp3 Please report any problem to access these files. Welcome! 1. Yes. http://www.zope.org/Members/brianh/iis_howto I haven't tried this, just found it on zope.org. 2. I presume the above takes care of that for you. Do a search on the mailing lists to try and find more info: http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Alists.zope.org&btnG=Google+Search or http://zope.nipltd.com/public/lists.html Other searchable archives exist, the above are the two that I use. Can anyone help answer the following two questions for me.. I am a newbie to Zope. 1. Can you run the Zope Server and IIS at the same time? I hope to be able to use www.myname.com and have it be picked-up by IIS, and www.myname.com/zope and have the Zope server take over. 2. If this question still applies, how use the Zope server without the port follow the domain name, such as www.myname.com:8080??? I followed the instruction as on zopefornembies.com and change the port to just 80. But then Zope server never worked.... Degrading performance with redirects?
by Jonathan (Listserv) 04 Dec '01

04 Dec '01

Hi, We're experiencing a problem with a Zope based site that serves most of its content via redirects, the new location based on results from a PostgreSQL database. The weird thing is that the Zope site becomes very slow after a week or two, which is fixed by restarting Zope. It doesn't seem to be a memory problem (512MB free out of 768MB total) or a load problem (server is 99% idle most of the time). Zope has about 5 Gigabytes of storage available, running on Red Hat Linux 7.1. The homepage is served by a redirect: <dtml-call "RESPONSE.setHeader('content-type', 'text/html')"> <dtml-call "RESPONSE.redirect('nl/another.page')"> The rest of the site is basic DTML, building tables based on results from the database with a few if's here and there. Could it be that the '.' in the redirect causes problems? Or the setHeader? Any ideas? Thanks! RE: [Zope] CMF, like it? hate it? why? other options?
by Meilicke, Scott 04 Dec '01

I think if you have multiple people contributing content, it can be a good fit. Pros: The contributor interface can be made easier than the ZMI Skins are great - easy to switch presentation with a single source of content Consistent set of metadata Cons: Difficult to develop products for people new to zope products and python - I have yet to find a list detailing exactly what I need to do to make a product, I have just copied existing products and modified Difficult to integrate non-CMF zope products into the CMF Seems to be a bit slower than stock zope - RAM Cache seems to partially solve this Perhaps addressing your concern, I have put a little icon next to each topic, which when clicked starts a pop-up describing how members can get their stuff published to that particular topic - i.e. what metadata to use. The next step would be something like getting a list of all topics, and asking the user where they would like there stuff to show up, then prepopulating their document/file/whatever with the proper metadata. -Scott -----Original Message----- From: Jacob Singh [mailto:jacob@prisonbooks.org] Sent: Tuesday, December 04, 2001 8:57 AM To: zope(a)zope.org Subject: [Zope] CMF, like it? hate it? why? other options? Is CMF worth investing the wicked steep learning curve. I really am banging my head against the wall with it. Mainly in terms of how to make it look like and feel like a normal website and not one that members need to know what folder an article is published in. It's all very confusing to me, but I se the benefits. What's your opinions? Jacob Singh P.S. I understand what it looks like; I was wondering how can you use JUST the login manager and not the whole CMF? -----Original Message----- From: lozinski(a)openstepnews.com [mailto:lozinski@openstepnews.com] Sent: Tuesday, December 04, 2001 12:30 PM To: Jacob Singh Subject: RE: [Zope] CMF, like it? hate it? why? other options? I also banged my head against CMF for the longest time. The trick to understanding it is that in CMF the user environment is the developpment environment. So log into CMF, then try to develop. That said, I believe CMF is overkill for all of my projects. I do not have a separate tree of content to present, and a separate tree of people who submit content. As a recruiter, every person has one resume, so there is just one tree. So CMF is overkill. I do plan to use the login manager. And then CMF adds so much junk to my system, I can no longer find anything. For example the permissions page becomes huge. So I happily deleted CMF. And I lived happily ever after. On a different topic: I just completed www.pythonandzope.com, and I would love some feedback. Regards Chris 1-510-795-6086 lozinski(a)openstepnews.com lozinski(a)jobmart.com

Sorting Zope objects in python scripts
by complaw＠hal-pc.org 04 Dec '01

If one were to write... myList = [] for obj in context.objectValues(['Folder', 'DTML Document']): if obj.instance_type = 'Desired Class': myList.append(obj) .. then I would want to sort the various objects. The question is, how do I do that? I could do... myList.sort() .. but that doesn't give me a way to control on which property the sort is done. You could use a sort function, such as... def compare_integers(first=0, second=0): if first > second: return 1 else: if first == second: return 0 else: return -1 .. and this leads to the part that I just don't grok. How do I specify a particular property within an object (such as element_number) as the parameter to be used for the comparison? Do I just... myList.sort(compare_integers) ?? Can anyone give me a quick hint? The python documentation is a little short in this area. Thanks in advance, Ron
