eGroups clone with zope?
by kellan 04 Dec '01

04 Dec '01

The Online Policy Group (affiliated with the EFF) is looking to build a free, open alternative to YahooGroups, essentially web-based interface to managing and participating in mailing lists, potentially with a file manager, and polls as well. When we talked about the project, I was sure I would find software that already fit our requirement spec. In particular I expected that mature frameworks like ACS or Zope would be sure to have a product that provided this. So far though I've drawn a blank. However Zope is still pretty new to me, so I might be missing some obvious solutions that already exist. Has anyone built an eGroups clone for Zope? Or integrated existing products to provide similiar functionality? -or- Can someone reccomend the best course to go about building such a beast? Obviously Zope already can handle user management - creation, authentication, etc... And I've seen products for polls, and bulletin board systems. But is there some existing tools that either provide a standard majordomo/mailman style mailing list, or integrate with one? Advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks kellan

Hi I have a site that runs under a folder in zope Is there a way I can configure Zope so it uses a certain port (like http://localhost:9090 <http://localhost:9090/> ) and it then goes directly tot this folder? Maarten Demont

Setting a document's domain
by Etienne Labuschagne 04 Dec '01

04 Dec '01

Hi there, I have posted a similar problem previously, but might have explained it badly: Is it possible to change a Zope generated document's domain? I need to communicate with my Zope from JavaScript served from a different server. I cannot access the window generated by my Zope server as this causes an access denied error (the page served by Zope is from a different domain as the page with the JavaScript). The only way around this can be to set the document's domain to the same domain of the JavaScript document. Any help would be appreciated. Regards Etienne

converting Python ap to Zope
by Jerry McRae 04 Dec '01

04 Dec '01

Hi ZoPeople, I have searched and read everything I could find for weeks, I still need help. I am attempting to convert a Python application into Zope. I am having much trouble creating a Product from this application because of some of its dependances. The user interface is completely separate, so that is not an issue. I have tried loading the whole app as an external method, which didn't work, but I learned to make a copy of ALL modules and place them in a Zope sub-folder. The python path from my stand-alone python 2.1 didn't get searched. I am attempting to write a Product to access my application, but have run into several errors mostly due to pickleing. I would like to have the same code for my base classes, but I have the following conundrums. Any pointers would be much appreciated. 1) There are a lot of classes and tables. Each user can create multiple sets of the application classes and tables. Each set of instances and attributes is pickled as a file. The application is basically just a wrapper for the pickled instances. I can think of no way to convert the pickle file into classes and attributes that Zope can see and/or modify. It seems I will have to re-factor each and every python class as a Zope class. 2) several specialized data files are involved, which are opened and positioned based on the classes and parameters. The files are needed for all aspects of the application. Since Zope cannot pickle open file handles, I could store file names, positions, and other attributes, but I don't know how to re-open the files any time Zope restarts so that the user just references my object name (and methods) to access the data. 3) the key to accessing these specialized files is a windows .DLL file that works great in Python, but is unpickleable (is that a word?) in Zope. I think I want to create a function that gets loaded when the Product does, but I cannot find any examples of Products that do this: allow instanciated objects to call custom functions created from __init__.py in a Product. There must be someplace to add globally available functions to Zope outside of ZODB, yes? --Jerry -- /\_/\ Jerry McRae \|||/ mail safely: The Bat! 1.53d (~o o~) (stuck in win98) (. .) Size of Data.fs: how big is too big?
by Paul Horbal 04 Dec '01

04 Dec '01

Hi everyone, My Zope site has been growing fairly large lately and I'm beginning to wonder at what point I should consider moving files out of the Zope filing system and onto a static filesystem. At this point, I haven't noticed any performance issues at all. Currently, Data.fs is about 300 MB in size. The site is running on a Sun Netra X1 (400 MHz UltraSparc IIe) with 512 MB of RAM. Should I be worried about adding more large files into Data.fs? thanks, Paul. -- horbal(a)atips.ca

How big a site can Zope handle?
by matt carey 04 Dec '01

04 Dec '01

Hi I'm a newbie with Zope, but have used it to build a fairly complex site recently. This site only had to support 91 users, all with access permissions, and quite a low traffic level. My studio is pitching to design a build a website for a very large organisation and I think Zope would be perfect. I need to know that it will be able to handle the amount of users and hits that this site will have to deal with. About 275,000 users to have accounts and about 150,000 hits a day (at the moment but set to grow quickly). Will Zope be able to deal with this? Newbie comparison Zope, MSCMS and RedDot - editing content
by Joshua Lanza 04 Dec '01

04 Dec '01

Hi, I'm a Zope-newbie (only heard of it 2 days ago), and I'm trying to see how it compares with something like RedDot or MSCMS, which have the ability to edit content right on the live page using placeholders. Eg: Click on the red dot, and I can edit a paragraph. So far, all I have found is how to edit object values through the management console. I think there must be something in the Zope world to do this. Getting pointed in the right direction on this would be much appreciated, Josh

HELP!! Crazy Problem!
by Ben Ocean 03 Dec '01

03 Dec '01

Hi; I've built a sophisticated Web site on Zope for a client that displays *just fine* for me but screws up for them. We're all using the same OS and browser. They get 404 error messages for the inline frames and sometimes get broken links for the images! http://constructioncalc.com/ How do I trouble-shoot this? TIA, BenO
