zope as NT Service
by Montagne, Michael 29 Aug '01

I'm having no luck getting zope to run as a service. I can install Zope 2.4 no problem. When it asks me if I want to run it as a service, I answer "Yes I do". Then everything appears fine. But http://localhost:8080/manage does not find any servers and upon stopping and restarting the service I get an error that says "Error 0193: %1 is not a valid Windows NT application". I had this problem with 2.3 also and now that I want my program on a real server, it should run as a service. What could the solution be? -mjm

Strange dtml-var behavior
by James van der Veen 29 Aug '01

29 Aug '01

Hello all!! I have a question about something I just couldn´t figure out myself.... I have a form wich passes the picture value depending on the picture people click on. Lets say one would click on the agenda_gif I would want the folowing page (the form action page ) to take that value and add _text to it. Well I have that working with the folowing <dtml-let text="picture +'_text'"> <img src="<dtml-var picture>" width="500"> <br> <dtml-var text> but this results in the page showing met the text: agenda_gif_text The thing is I don´t want it to return this bit of text but the propety agenda_gif_text that the folder it lives in has. Can someone help me on getting this? Sure hope so!! Greetz, James van der Veen

RE: [Zope] ZClass views and manage_ methods

>I havent messed with external classes (since I am new to SQL), but they >sound interesting and ...hmmm, safer. > >Can you include all the methods and images that you get with ObjectManager? >any good source of info on this? Pretty sure you can do anything with external classes/methods that you can do with TTW ZClasses and methods, plus a whole lot more. Using a RDBMS is really a different way of looking at things. I have more experience using relational databases, so it feels more familiar and safer, but I do feel drawn to the whole object database paradigm. I am sure that for some applications it will be much cleaner, faster and easier. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

printable page
by Jan Ulrich Hasecke 29 Aug '01

29 Aug '01

Hi, I saw that on zope.org you can get printable pages. How are they generated? I also want to integrate printable pages in my project. I want to do this by changing the standard_html_header. I would insert in standard_html_header something like this: <dtml-if expr="printable"> <html> <head> print-stylesheet <body> <dtml-else> <html> <head> screen-stylesheet <body> ...complex navigation </dtml-if> Similar in standard_html_footer. What would be the right if-construction and how can I set the condition "printable" dynamically from inside the given DTMLDocument. The Document should have a button or link which sets the condition printable while loading itself again. TIA juh -- 6 Millionen arme Sünderlein http://www.sudelbuch.de/2000/20000807.html

Tips on hardening
by Paz 29 Aug '01

29 Aug '01

Hi all, I'd just like to ask for some basic tips one may suggest on site hardening. What I mean is that my boss tells me due to an oncoming conference, we should expect a huge ramp up in hits per day. More like from 200 hits per day to 20,000 hits per day. I cant say I've ever worked on a site of that magnitude, and I wouldn't know what to look at first as far as reliability testing. So far the site uses SQLSession0.3.0 (which I would like to change now to CoreSessionTracking and psycopg 0.99.4. Any tips on what I examine for reliability would be greatly appreciated.. If there are any... p.s. Is there a CoreSessionTracking version available in the 2.4.x range? Thanks, Paz

Re: Czech Zope portal

Hello ViNyL! There is really a need for cz zope related site(s). I'd like to start such (CMF) portal and community soon. I think that we should cooperate to achieve our goals and work just once. We (cz zope community) sure need czech documentation, books, training, support and good public relations. I have been talking with some people and there is possibility to create some organization (not just web Members) to help each other and to be stronger. I am open to idea to be part of bigger international effort to create truly international zope community... Please mail/icq me and take my invitation to drink a beer with me in Brno. Hi Philip, I'm cc'ing the list, perhaps someone has some input... comments interleaved. > From: Philip Aylesworth <phila(a)purpleduck.com> > Date: Thu, 23 Aug 2001 20:36:13 -0400 (EDT) > To: info(a)bowery.com > Subject: image hot fix > > > Hi Marc, > > I have to tell you that this image hot fix is exactly what I need! I was using > Photo but it is no longer supported and this does things more the way I want > to. > > I am modifying it so that it will have several default sizes that can be > cached. Actually, if you look at the code, i *think* I have stuff in there to allow you to use it with a RAMCache. The idea being, make a RAM cache for caching all thumbnail images, not just private caching for each instance. I'm still unfamiliar with how that all works in Zope, but architecturally I think that's the best place to put a cache (external to the images themselves). I still don't see how to get this caching to work for all instances, it seems the caches need to add one instance at a time... But this way, they are stored where appropriate (cached), but not stored inside the image (which could lead to unneccessary data.fs bloat). > I am not to swift with python yet so I just went in and duplicated the thumb > method and made some methods called "preview", "small", and "medium"giving > them > default sizes of 160X120, 320X 240, and 640X480. The way I have it working, if you call tag() with the same size twice, at the least, the client browser should use the locally cached version (at least, it did for me), so I don't see that it's necessary to have specially named methods. For example, in my CMFPhoto and in the original ZPhoto, the thumbnail pages always call tag with a size of 80, so they'll be cached (at least per client) the second time around. >I have this working now but I > noticed one little bug in your code. The "keys =" line reverses the height and > width. I fixed this by replacing it with: > > keys = {'width':int(width or height), 'height':int(height or width)} Doh! Thanks for pointing it out! I guess that gives me a reason for version 0.2 (along with changing the name to image HotPatch!) -- though I'm hoping to figure out the RAMCache situation (help! somebody!) first... > > Now I have one question, if you don't mind. How do I make the tag method > return > a URL for the size of image that I want? I see that you have thumb hard coded > in > there. If you have time to take a look at this I would really appreciate it. I have thumb hard coded (in tag), because that's the method the browser will then call (with arguments) to actually fetch the image. I guess, if you're rolling with the three special method approach (though I don't think it's necessary), then in tag I guess you'd either create a new parameter for tag (size=[preview, small, medium]) or match one of the three names with a range of sizes, and put more if/elses in there to return the right one. > > Thanks for the great work! > > Phil. > > Philip Aylesworth > phila(a)purpleduck.com

Yet Another Namespace Question
by Roger Erens 28 Aug '01

28 Aug '01

Hello, I'd just like to make sure that I interpret Zope Book's chapter 7 (Advanced DTML scripting) correctly. "But the DTML stack is not all there is to names because DTML doesn't start with an empty stack, (...)" "the client object is the first object on the top of the DTML namespace stack." "the request namespace is always on the bottom of the DTML namespace stack (...)." To me this sounds as if there could be a whole bunch of objects in between these two objects, but I have not seen any proof of this. So I guess I stick to this picture before execution starts? | | | client object | top of namespace stack | | | | ...really nothing in between? | | | request | bottom of namespace stack +------------------+ Now suppose I have a folder X, containing objects A and B. I call a script gimmeListing on X; gimmeListing uses <dtml-in objectValues>. Hence the namespace would look like this in the first iteration? | | \ | A | \ | | \ | X | > this whole beast is the _ namespace? (Which has some interesting | | / attributes such as len(), | REQUEST | / getitem() and range() +------------------+ / ) Thanks, Roger
