ColdFusion - I want to remain a Zopista, please help
by Mojo Clark 28 Jul '01

This email I received from the head of our IS dept. explains my situation (posted with sender's permission after anonymizing it). ======================================================== As you are all well aware there has been a recent surge in the amount of web design work that staff has been seeking. This has brought to light the fact that we need to have a standard in web design software. I am referring to design software that takes us beyond the level of what programs like Dreamweaver and Front Page can do. I believe the two options we have here are Zope and ColdFusion. Please put together a list of pros and cons regarding what you would like to use to accomplish some of our more intensive web design tasks. Send your lists to me via e-mail by the 26th of July and I will compile them into something that we can sit down and work through and come up with a decision on what our standard should be. I have checked to see if [the parent company] has a standard and it appears that they do not as they do not have a true web design group. Due to the increasing amount of work, I would like to make a decision on this rather quickly so as not to delay the production of any projects. ============================================================ I've been a Zopista for about a year so I can address the benefits of Zope, but I am not knowledgeable regarding ColdFusion. What is driving the pro-ColdFusion push is our graphics department whose main web tool is Dreamweaver. They don't do dynamic web programming or database integration and it took some explaining to move the choice from Zope vs. Dreamweaver to Zope vs. ColdFusion. I am looking for reasons why Zope is a better choice than ColdFusion. Any knowledgeable responses greatly appreciated. I sense that using Zope would be a non-issue if the graphics dept. was assured that they wouldn't have to abandon their GUI-based design tools. Does anyone have experience collaborating with Zope where the non-programming graphics people are sharing the Zope interface? Have you been able to find a mutually agreeable arrangement? There has been plenty of discussion regarding "Zopeweaver" but it sounds like integration is limited. -mojo clark _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

Logged off Username showing up in REQUEST variable for manager
by James Johnson 28 Jul '01

I'm using zope 2.3.3 on winnt and when I get an error by passing parameters to a pythonscript not expecting any. Using the latest Zdebug I see "__ac_name 'A user on my systems name'" This user is located in a folder and a cmf instance. The cmf is the last release before Tres went on vaction. Why would that user name still be floating around like that? Thanks, Jimbo _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

Stupid Newbie question
by David Lambert 28 Jul '01

28 Jul '01

I am sure that the answer to this question has been staring at me ever since I started using Zope. Anyway, how do I find a list of 'builtin' variables such as 'id' ,'title', and 'title_or_id' etc.? I just realized that I had been using them without really understanding where they are defined. Could it be dangerous if I inadvertantly reused these names? Many thanks, Dave.

Yay! My first paying Zope job! (HELP!)
by Eric Walstad 28 Jul '01

I finally convinced my client to give Zope a try. It's taken a long time and I've had to plow thru a lot of "What's Python!?" "What's Zope!?" questions and shrink-wrap inertia. It's a small project, but it's a project and I get to play with Zope! Anyway, I had to share the news with someone that can relate to how I feel about finally having a Zope project that pays! Now for the HELP part. The target system will be RH6.2 and we need to run Apache with SSL in front of Zope and MySQL behind it. I can handle Zope and MySQL, but I have very little experience with installing and configuring Apache and SSL to work in front of Zope. Before I wander blindly into the web looking for the right documentation, I was hoping that someone here might have good pointers to HOWTO's that would speed the learning process for me. Zope specific leads (if there are any) would be fantastic. Thanks for any help you can provide. Eric.

Renaming folder slow...
by sean.upton＠uniontrib.com 28 Jul '01

28 Jul '01

I have a folder that contains a hierarchy that includes some code, and about 10,000 cataloged objects; renaming that folder is really slow; I'm just curious if anyone knows why? Does the id of the folder have to be re-keyed in all of its children? RE: [Zope] How do I efficiently join catalog results with other data?
by J. Cone 28 Jul '01

Hello All, I'm not sure you have a problem you can solve lasily here. Simplifying the problem immensely, if you have two one-to-one mappings, involving three completely disjoint orderable datatypes: A <-> B B <-> C and you want to produce a list of C in the order suggested by A, there are two reasonable ways of doing it: - merge then sort - get both lists sorted in B order (assumed free) - walk down finding B's that match (you can tell what to discard because it's less than the head of the other one) (linear) - sort on A (log-linear; not lazy) - sort then lookup - get the first list in A order (assumed free) - get the second list as a dictionary of B->C (assumed free) - walk the first list looking up C values in the second (log per lookup; log-linear in total; not lazy on B->C) If you want to do this in python, I think sort-then-lookup might be more natural, and that the small-code way of doing it might be: - make the lookup into a lambda function (see www.python.org) - map the lambda function down the A<->B list The key step in merge-then-sort is the merge. It would need about 10 lines of horrible ksh. I don't believe there's any natural way of doing it in python. HTH, J. Help needed in getting HierMenu to work
by Greg McCall 28 Jul '01

28 Jul '01

Hi Has anyone had success using the HierMenu listed at http://www.zope.org/Members/Ioan/ZHierMenus It seems to use the HierMenus at http://www.webreference.com/dhtml/hiermenus/ I would rather use this Javascript menu system using Zope in place of just putting the Javascript in the page and manually setting the menu. Maybe someone has got it working and I have missed something? I am using Zope 2.3.3 (binary release, python 1.5.2, linux2-x86) regards Greg

ZDebug 0.2 incompatible with Formulator 1.0
by Dieter Maurer 28 Jul '01

28 Jul '01

Just analysed a strange exception during form validation with Formulator: Zope reported a "TypeError: expected 3, got 2 arguments" from "ZDebug.DTMLDebug.py:184". This is in the middle of a call to "dtmlexc", no function call around. It turned out that: The problem was the creation of the exception object. ZDebug assumes that exceptions accept a single string argument, but "FormValidationError" wants 2 arguments. Attached is a patch trying to work around the problem: It raises the exception in a "try ... except". When this raises the expected exception, then it is reraised; otherwise, the original exception is raised (which is not so good as the ZDebug Message but better than nothing). Dieter

Then you can use the > "sort_on" argument to the catalog to sort on the dynamic data. The set of data is different for every user so this won't work unless I was willing to have a seperate catalog for every user. Having a seperate catalog for each user would be fine if I could combine two to searchs of two different catalogs togeather. and by combine I don't the _plus_ operator you can use for search results. What I need is a relational join, ie only the results from both sets where a certain field has the same value on both. Someone must have tried to do something like this before?
