Thanks for the reply, Joel... Do I have to use virtual hosts when using Apache/SSL/Zope? It's probably a good idea in the long run, in case they need to run more than one site from this machine, but is it required? Thanks, Eric. > Get the SSL set up on Apache w/o any special Zope setup first. FTP automangling file extension: semi-working proof-of-concept
by Joel Burton 28 Jul '01

28 Jul '01

Yesterday, I suggested that it might be helpful for FTP & WebDAV to return a pseudo-extension for the type of file being read so that non-Zope-saavy programs could more effectively work with Zope files. (Some programs, notably Dreamweaver and GoLive, refuse to work w/files w/o extensions.) When the file is later uploaded via FTP/WebDAV, the extension would be removed. I've tinkered ~30min with the source code and made two very trivial changes to produce a proof-of-concept. This does the following: 1) in FTP, all files are shown with ".foo" extension 2) when a file is rec'd, the ".foo" is stripped back off It's __far__ from a real implementation: the extensions would be sensitive to the type of file being edited; the ".foo" stripping code should check to see if this is a WebDAV/FTP transfer (right now it *always* strips the .foo off!), etc. However, even with this trivial patch, it works well enough to: 1) teach Dreamweaver that .foo files should be edited w/dreamweaver 2) through Zope, create a "test" DTML Document 3) in Dreamweaver+FTP, this test doc shows up as test.foo 4) this can be edited in Dreamweaver and saved 5) the changes appear as "test" in Zope. What I'd Like: Is this a fair idea? I doubt the fine folks at ZopeCorp will rush my three-line patch into the core ;-), but I'd would like to get the sense if I'm heading in a sane direction. Obviously, you should apply this patch to a production server: (patched to the Zope 2.4 source) [joel@eos joel]$ diff -Naur old new diff -Naur old/lib/python/OFS/ObjectManager.py new/lib/python/OFS/ObjectManager.py --- old/lib/python/OFS/ObjectManager.py Thu Jul 5 15:09:08 2001 +++ new/lib/python/OFS/ObjectManager.py Sat Jul 28 02:38:43 2001 @@ -660,7 +660,7 @@ try: stat=marshal.loads(v.manage_FTPstat(REQUEST)) except: stat=None if stat is not None: - out=out+((k,stat),) + out=out+((k+'.foo',stat),) # WJB return marshal.dumps(out) def manage_FTPstat(self,REQUEST): @@ -689,6 +689,10 @@ def __getitem__(self, key): + + if key[-4:]=='.foo': # WJB + key=key[:-4] + v=self._getOb(key, None) if v is not None: return v if hasattr(self, 'REQUEST'): -- Joel Burton <jburton(a)scw.org> Director of Information Systems, Support Center of Washington

Re: Is there a "Virtual Folder" Product??
by Philipp Robbel 28 Jul '01

28 Jul '01

Another thing: I'm using a breadcrumb system on my page that currently uses obj.absolute_url() to add the links. The absolute_url() that the Aims Document accessed via http://server/deutsch/research/Aims returns is still http://server/english/research/Aims (the physical place). Is there a way that I could change that? How would I resolve the url to take the MFolder Product into count? Thanks again, Philipp Robbel

Speed of Zope sever
by Tommy Johnson 27 Jul '01

27 Jul '01

Hey all, I seem to recall reading something like this before, but it could have just been a dream. Anyway, is there a correlation between the size of the ZODB and its speed at which it serves files to be viewed via http? Granted, we have only been on our development box, so when we finish sites, we'll just export/import them to the production server, but is there some way to speed up Zope? I've scheduled a meeting with our sys admin to see if he knows something, but I wanted to pool this resource as well. Thanks in advance, Tommy Innovation: The Best Way To Predict The Future ... SubObject view for "folderish" ZClasses
by Jeff Peterson 27 Jul '01

27 Jul '01

Zopistas, I am using Zope 2.4... I have created a "folderish" ZClass. When I look at it the subObjects view is not there, I looked at an earlier Zope version with a "folderish" ZClass I created and found it was there. It is also mentioned multiple times in the list archives. I want to limit the add list within this folderish object to only the objects I create for it. How do I do this now? TIA, -- Jeffrey D. Re: Is there a "Virtual Folder" Product??
by Philipp Robbel 27 Jul '01

Hi Dieter and others, first of all: thanks for your great product: i admit - it looks like the perfect choice to me. I installed it on Zope 2.3.2 and get the following behaviour: My structure: root |- german (has its standard_html_header) | `- research `- english (has its standard_html_header `- research `- ProjectOne (folder with index_html: <dtml-var standard_html_header>Welcome.<dtml-var standard_html_footer>) I installed a MFolder as "root" (see above) with a MirrowId__ set to "english". When I type in the following URL into the browser: http://server/root/german/research/ProjectOne I get the english standard_html_header along with ProjectOne's index_html. Is there a way to modify your great product so that ProjectOne's index_html <dtml-var standard_html_header/footer> get the german's standard_html_header/footer? Thanks in advance for your help, Philipp Robbel

How do I efficiently join catalog results with other data?
by Jay, Dylan 27 Jul '01

27 Jul '01

Here is my problem: I have a dynamic per user map of data about various objects. I want to do a catalog search, combine the results with my other dynamic data and then sort on the dynamic data. Has anyone tried doing this? How do I do it efficiently, still getting the benifits of low memory usage of lazy result sets? Can I do this transparently so the results of the join look like a normal catalog results? Can I do this using only through the web scripts?
