Transparent Folders curse strikes again: A play in two acts
by Itai Tavor 24 Jul '01

24 Jul '01

Hi, I've just been bitten with a Transparent Folder bug for the fourth time. A Folder containting a Transparent Folder becomes itself transparent, with the result that my whole ZODB is now a mess of acquired objects that pretty much prevent anything from working right. In the past the only way I found to clear the problem was to delete the Transparent Folders, export everything, reimport and recreate the TFs. But if it's just going to happen again, what's the point? Last time it happened I posted a message about it, which resulted in absolutely nothing happening. I don't get it... I'm sure I'm not the only one using Transparent Folders (or am I?)... how come nobody else suffers from this? And it's not like I'm doing anything really unusual... I just create a few TFs, throw in some methods and keep working happily, and at some point everything becomes transparent. Please someone tell me you know something about this, so I don't have to give up on TFs and rebuild my entire ZODB... Update: I just installed TF 0.3.2, just to be safe. Then I wrote a method that traversed the whole object tree and checked all Folders for a _is_transparent property. Didn't find any. So far so good. Then I changed it to print _transparent_object_ids for all objects that got that property. Sure enough, Folders which contain TFs appear in the list of their parent Folders. Well, at least it's not an obscure, Itai-is-just-making-it-up kind of problem. I got proof! Ok, I added a line to set _transparent_object_ids to () unless a Folder really contains TFs. Problem gone. But do I believe it won't come back? Not for a minute. So, the question now, for anyone who understands the TF patch code, is: how do these (very non-transparent) Folders get into the list, and how do I ensure they don't get back on the list any time they feel like it, without having to run this test method every day? Zope and Oracle
by Tommy Johnson 24 Jul '01

24 Jul '01

Hey all, Has anyone ever connected to Oracle from Zope? How about connecting to another machine that runs Oracle (machine A runs Zope; machine B runs Oracle)? If so, how ... or a friendly pointer in the right direction would be appreciated. ;-> I'm just wondering, because I feel that I would rather pull some information (already in Oracle), rather than setting up 130+ objects in Zope. What I have is an email listing, that holds first name, last name, email, and some other info. I see that I, if in Zope, would make a separate object to hold this info for each separate listing. Now, if there were only 10 listings, I'd be fine with it. However, from last count, it was over 130, and still growing. I really don't want to manage all those objects, much less create all of them! And since it already exists in Oracle .... well, you get the picture. Besides, I may want to have a Zope/Oracle combo in the future, so it may help to iron this stuff out now. Thanks in advance, Tommy Innovation: The Best Way To Predict The Future ... Is To Create It.

Converting REQUEST style lists into real lists
by Tomek Giela 24 Jul '01

When you put into your form: <input type="checkbox" name="varia" value="1"> <input type="checkbox" name="varia" value="2"> <input type="checkbox" name="varia" value="3"> <input type="checkbox" name="varia" value="4"> <input type="checkbox" name="varia" value="5"> <input type="checkbox" name="varia" value="6"> and then select first three of them and submit that form, you'll get in form "action" document: <dtml-var varia> displayed as: ['1','2','3'] Is there an easy way to convert 'varia' into a list? Those inputs are dynamicaly generated from database, and I want to analyse which were choosen in <dtml-in "varia"> block. Or, maybe there is another trick to colect&analyse them in a simple loop? -- Tomek Giela IMAGINATION DESIGN S.C.

MS Access follow-followup
by Bruce Dykes 24 Jul '01

Thanks to all who replied. It turns out that the NT server will be the new host of the database (just for storing the master copy - not as a database server), and it turns out we need to build a scheduling/calendaring and messaging app around it. Before I found out this particular bit of info, I was playing around with converting the database to XML. If you have no need of write access to the database, either structurally, or just records, this isn't necessarily a bad option. But since we'll be hosting the database, and building this app around it, the obvious solution is to install Zope on the NT box, and query it from the Linux website as a client, and let Zope plus ODBC take care of all the mess. I'll post my newbie questions separately, so as to keep them in the newbie thread, and they are rather generic. But I have one or two intermediate level questions. 1> Does Zope on Win32 have the ability to automatically execute an event, such as send an automated email on a given date? I imagine the worst case scenario is to have an external method that calls a script that writes an NT Task Scheduler entry that sends out a form email with all the required blanks filled in. I'm hoping that there's either a product or that Zope has that functionality builtin, so I can manage it all from within Zope. 2> After reading the documentation for some of the Win32 based products, I went ahead and installed the latest version of Python for Windows, as it seems version 2.1.1 is better suited for interfacing with Windows objects than 1.5, and I want to keep options open, such as maybe serving up Visio diagrams or the like. Good idea or bad idea? Which will be used? I see that some batch files point to C:\Program Files\website\bin\python.exe while scripts executed on their own just call the registered Python interpreter, which is 2.1.1. Is this bad? Newbie questions to follow... Thanks Bruce

Re: [Zope] CoreSessionTracking - looping over items
by Chris McDonough 23 Jul '01

Please try to keep correspondence on the list. THis can't be done from DTML if you're using an internal session data container because DTML can't access attributes with a leading underscore. Either use an external session data container or use an external method. For instance, here's an external method that returns the number of session data objects in the internal session data container, along with some DTML that calls it. def numberOfDataObjects(session_data_manager): return len(session_data_manager._sdc) <dtml-var "numberOfDataObjects(session_data_manager)"> HTH, - C ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pawel Lewicki" <lewicki(a)provider.pl> To: "Chris McDonough" <chrism(a)digicool.com> Sent: Monday, July 23, 2001 1:58 PM Subject: Re: [Zope] CoreSessionTracking - looping over items > > > You can loop over the session data object in a session data container. > The > > session data container uses the Python mapping interface. > > > > There is an "internal" session data container if you're using the default > > RAM-based sessioning. Was DC's name-change the 'surprise news' promised by Michel?
by Hamish Lawson 23 Jul '01

23 Jul '01

At the recent EuroZope conference in Berlin, Michel Pelletier promised there would be some 'surprise news' when Zope 2.4.0 was released. Zope 2.4.0 has just been released, but I can't see anything in the announcement that hadn't been indicated beforehand. Was Michel in fact referring to Digital Creations' simultaneous name change rather than to something in Zope 2.4.0 itself? Netscape doesn't recognize dtml-doc as html
by Stephan Goeldi 23 Jul '01

23 Jul '01

I think this is a newbie question. When Netscape doesn't realize, that a dtml-document is HTML (e.g. when I have a link to http://www.website.com/zope and /zope is a dtml-doc), what can I do? In the standard_html_header is the tag !doctype html public "-//w3c//dtd html 3.2//en" I thought this should be enough to let browsers recognize dtml as html. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
