Acquisition question (run for the hills!)
by Scott Anderson 03 Jul '01

03 Jul '01

OK, I've read the acquisition HOW-TOs, and either I'm dense or I didn't find the answer to my question. I have a setup like this: /main header localTitle /sub localTitle index_html header includes dtml-var localTitle. index_html includes dtml-var header. Why doesn't header pull /sub/localTitle instead of /localTitle when it is included by /sub/index_html? :-) Thanks in advance, -scott

Zserver Broken pipe error

Will ZEO solve my problem?
by Kyler B. Laird 03 Jul '01

03 Jul '01

[This is a terribly fuzzy question/situation. I'm looking for insight/suggestions, not guarantees.] We've been migrating everything we do to Zope for the past few months. We are just starting to get buy-in and funding for equipment. Already, however, we have lots of people using our Zope server which is hosted on a dual P-850 I was able to hijack for the purpose. (I found that the Sun E450 I had available was way too slow.) We're planning to split things up into a cluster that consists of multiple HTTPS proxies, some ZEO clients, a ZEO server and a hot ZEO server spare. Until then, I need to make the current system usable. (We have all of our Heads and Deans using ZWiki Pages to put together our strategic plan.) The problem we've been encountering is that every so often (several times a day) the server goes nuts and I end up restarting it. I can watch "top" and see a single python process take all of one CPU time for an extended period. I've been unable to determine from the logs (and the server-status of the HTTPS proxy) what's causing this to happen. Because we have so many applications running on this host, the traditional debugging methods I've seen don't seem to (easily) apply. Since I'm going to use ZEO eventually, I thought I would try it this week to see if it helps with this problem. At least I should be able to move the problem to either the ZEO server or client. If it ends up in the ZEO client (as I suspect it will), I can use the front-end proxy to route requests to other ZEO clients while I restart the one that's spinning. I can also restart the spinning ZEO client quickly. If it's in the ZEO server, I'm still screwed. I have been avoiding packing the database (so that I have the history and ability to undo some of the actions), so it takes awhile to start up. Any thoughts? Is there a way to tell exactly what a process is doing (in Zope/Python terms)? I just need a clue where to start looking. Fwd: Re: [Zope] beginner

Hi! Sorry - I just noticed that I've sent this mail to Chris directly instead of adressing it to the list... Here we go again... ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: Re: [Zope] beginner Date: Mon, 2 Jul 2001 11:08:11 +0200 From: Gernot Hillier <gernot(a)hillier.de> To: "Chris McDonough" <chrism(a)digicool.com> Hi! > What, specifically, about > the documentation is poor? How can we improve it? I'm a Zope newbie, too, and I had similar problems with the documentation. So may I make some suggestions for the improvement of your help system: - It would be great to group the HowTos in an intuitive way. It's not very nice to go to "New-User-HowTos" and have to search through 121 documents which are not related to each other. - It would be a great relief if you could search through a special category only, for example I want to search only the SiteDeveloper-HowTo's for some keywords - if there is already some feature like this available - I wasn't able to find it, sorry :-(( - It would be very helpful to make the output of the search function more informative. For example, I searched some information about using XML in Zope. What's the way to go? If I search for "XML" I get 457 items and can only see some names which don't tell me something meaningful. How about using some kind of summary for each HowTo? Again, here it would be very helpful to be able to search through some special categories only... I think the problem isn't the lack of documentation for Zope, but the lack of good ways to find it. But this should not mean you do bad work - I'm very excited about the really interesting features Zope offers me and the Zope Book is really very nice!! It's very hard to understand most of the Zope internals for me - in spite of me being well used to object oriented programming. And it's IMHO not possible to do more than the most simple things without a understanding how Zope works - for example I had big problems in creating the most simple pyhton scripts because I can't use my standard_html_header in them, I had some expressions working inline a dtml-var but not in a python script, and so on... All pyhton expressions I used to write were subject to a extensive try and error testing... Unfortunately I had no time to read the ZDB yet, perhaps it will help me to understand more... But I'm sure all these things will get better and Zope will be a real alternative to Apache & Co. sooner or later ;-)) -- Bye, Gernot

Updating Zclass object titles
by Sherman Lambert (State Public Defenders Office) 03 Jul '01

03 Jul '01

Hello all, I am trying to edit an instance of a ZClass to update the title. I am using the dtml- <dtml-call "doc.propertysheets.Basic.manage_changeProperties(REQUEST)"> where this is in the submit form of a HTML form, with "title" as a field. This will update all properties except the title. I have l also tried directly updating it by calling <dtml-call "doc.propertysheets.Basic.manage_changeProperties(title=new_title)"> I have tried trapping exceptions, and neither of these calls raise one. So does anybody know what's the deal? Sherman

"@" in object id's : invalid
by Philippe Jadin 03 Jul '01

03 Jul '01

Hello, It seems that valid characters for zope id's are only : chars, numbers, "," "." and spaces. I'm wondering how I can store emails adress as valid zope object id's. I'd like to setup a simple list of emails stored as dtml docs with the emails as id. as "@" are invalid characters for zope id, I currently have no other solution than replacing those with "," which is not totally nice imho ;-) (i tried using "%40" but it's invalid too) Does anyone have an idea for my little problem ? Thanks Philippe

Cataloging zclass problem
by Oliver Bleutgen 03 Jul '01

03 Jul '01

Hi zopistas, I have (had) a slight problem here concerning getting zclasses in a catalog with zope 2.3.1 to 2.3.3. I have a folderish (catalog-aware) zclass whose content is in a dtml-method (named content). I have added a python script which renders my content for indexing via: return(render(context.content(context))) I got the follwing error (pulled out of medusa_monitor for better verbosity) on some (a third) of all zclasses. The traceback I get in the ZMI is the same. k.manage_catalogReindex(None,None,'/') Traceback (innermost last): File "/home/bleutgen/bin/Zope-2.3.1-src/ZServer/medusa/monitor.py", line 94, in found_terminator result = eval (co, self.local_env) File "<secure_monitor_channel connected 127.0.0.1:2905 at 890f7e8>", line 0, in ? The funny thing is that just certain character-combination seem to trigger this error. For instance I could trim the index content down to the two characters (fi) and got the above error. Anybody any idea? cheers, oliver
