Hi folks, I have just installed zope on my FreeBSD box. The problem is that it's dryving me crazy. It's very complex. Is there a source of documentation like the one we can see (for instance) for MySQL. Zope documentation is very poor, why? Another question that's catching my hears: Why is zope not written in C? Any kind of server tools should be coded in C, isn't it? Regards! -- We call our dog Egypt, because in every room he leaves a pyramid.

Zope on FreeBSD 4.3-STABLE - Doesn't start on bootup!
by Robert Moss 03 Jul '01

03 Jul '01

Hi, Have checked the mail archives but haven't turned up anything relevant. A few postings but they were related to compile errors. A very bizarre problem is happening when running Zope at boot time on FreeBSD 4.3 where the process is run, it forks, the child process runs but seems to disappear without a trace when running the ZServer __init__.py script. The function max_sockets.max_select_sockets() seems to cause the child process to exit without being handled by the except clause that has been put in. We have put print messages all the way through, and see the entire script run once, then on the second time (for the forked child process) we see just before the max_sockets function, then nothing. The log file is not very descriptive, just says About for fork Have forked with PID xxx Aaaiieee exited with error code 256 We can start up Zope manually without a problem, log in as root and run the same command as in /etc/rc.local, but when run from /etc/rc.local it just dies constantly. Anyone have similar problems? What was the fix? Have checked the sysctl variables from Boot time and post-boot time, and none of them seem to stand out.. securelevel is always -1 (anything goes).. Thanks, Robert Moss. --------------------------------------------- Receive faxes 24x7, no second line necessary. http://www.mbox.com.au/

python script imports
by Mate' Sztipanovits 03 Jul '01

Does anyone know what python objects we can import in our Zope python scripts? When I try importing the os module my script just comes up with a zope domain login and none of my two users work. (And it simply gives me an error on including something like win32api.) Please let me write a line if you knwo about this. Thanks: my email is sztipam(a)vuse.vanderbilt.edu --Mate'

MyProduct/MyZClass. It doesn't work for ZClasses nested in another ZClass. (If you know a workaround, please let me know.)" All my content classes are second-level or deeper. :-( So that said, would it be possible to reimplement the changes in BetterCatalogAware as a Hotfix or patch? (I still haven't delved much into Zope internals, so I don't know exactly what's involved with that). Or are these changes something I could implement in my ZClasses themselves? I'm getting bitten in particular by the virtual hosting weirdness, which I didn't notice at first since I didn't start using virtual hosting until most of the site was completed. :-\ -- Tim Moore

Database connection in Python script and quoting characters
by Chris Muldrow 03 Jul '01

03 Jul '01

A Pythonish question: If I'm working with a DBI module and am inserting items in a database as so: sql = "insert into homestest ("+CatHead+") values ("+foundData+")" print sql crsr.execute(sql) How should my string foundData look as far as escaping characters? Right now, I send over values with apostrophes and commas and they make the SQL code choke. Thanks! - Chris Muldrow

Re: [Zope] debugging help needed
by Irene Barg 02 Jul '01

Jim, Another person pointed this out to me earlier today. What I want is the 'value' of 'sequence-item' which will be each column name in my family table. Since I know what the 'column' names are, I could do this like: <dtml-call "REQUEST.set(lastname,_.string.upper(REQUEST['lastname']))"> ....and so on for all of the columns in my table, but I want to acquire these column names via the "names" method. Actually, it would be cleaner to do it inside a Python script but I couldn't figure out how to modify the REQUEST object. Thanks for your input, your's too Daniel!
